Recent progress in the research area will be briefly reviewed. It has been proved that it is impossible to satisfy consistency, availability, and partitioned-tolerance simultaneously. Tradeoff becomes crucial among these factors to choose a suitable data access model for a distributed storage system. In this article, new security issues will be addressed and potential solutions will be discussed. Introduction “Cloud Computing ”, a novel computing model for large-scale application, has attracted much attention from both academic and industry. Since 2006, Google Inc. Chief Executive Eric Schmidt introduced the term into industry, and related research had been carried out in recent years. Cloud computing provides scalable deployment and fine-grained management of services through efficient resource sharing mechanism (most of them are for hardware resources, such as VM). Convinced by the manner called “ pay-as-you-go ” [1][2], companies can lower the cost of equipment management including machine purchasing, human maintenance, data backup, etc. Many cloud services rapidly appear on the Internet, such as Amazon’s EC2, Microsoft’s Azure, Google’s Gmail, Facebook, and so on. 1 Sex differences in preferences for humor produced by men or women: Is humor in the sex of the perceiver? [word count = <2500] Address correspondence to: 2 ABSTRACT It is a common argument that men are funnier than women. Recently, this belief has received modest empirical support among evolutionary psychologists who argue that humor results from sexual selection. Humor signals intelligence, and women thus use humor to discriminate between potential mates. From this, it follows that in addition to men being skilled producers of humor, women should be skilled perceivers of humor. Extant research has focused on humor production; here we focus on humor perception. In three studies, men and women identified the most humorous professional comedian (Studies 1 and 2) or individual they know personally (Study 3). We found large sex differences. In all three studies, men overwhelmingly preferred humor produced by other men, whereas women showed smaller (study 1) or no (studies 2 and 3) sex preference. We discuss biological and cultural roots of humor in light of these findings. 3 Sex differences in humor perception: Is humor in the sex of the perceiver? Although sex differences in the ability to produce humor have been debated at least since the 17th century (Congreve, 1695/1761; for more recent discussion, see the dialog between Hitchens and Stanley, Hitchens, 2007; Stanley, 2007), surprisingly few empirical studies exist on the topic. Yet understanding any sex difference in humor production or perception is important, since research suggests that humor mediates crucial social, psychological, and physiological processes. Socially, humor performs invaluable roles in persuasion (Mulkay, 1988) and managing personal relationships (Shiota, Campos, Keltner, & Hertenstein, 2004). -

The VPPA defines “consumer” as any renter, purchaser, or subscriber. However, the Act does not define the term “subscriber.” Over the past thirty years, there has been a rapid increase in the use of downloadable apps that allow individuals to watch videos and other online content for free on their mobile phones. -

BRIEFING Coronavirus and the European film industry SUMMARY With the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, which has caused the shutdown of some 70 000 cinemas in China, nearly 2 500 in the US and over 9 000 in the EU, the joy sparked by the success of the film industry in 2019 has quickly given way to anxiety. Shootings, premieres, spring festivals and entertainment events have faced near-total cancellation or postponement due to the pandemic, thus inflicting an estimated loss of US$5 billion on the global box office; this amount could skyrocket to between US$15 billion and US$17 billion, if cinemas do not reopen by the end of May 2020. The EU film sector is essentially made up of small companies employing creative and technical freelancers, which makes it particularly vulnerable to the pandemic. The domino effect of the lockdown has triggered the immediate freeze of hundreds of projects in the shooting phase, disrupted cash flows and pushed production companies to the brink of bankruptcy. To limit and/or mitigate the economic damage caused by coronavirus, governments and national film and audiovisual funds across the EU have been quick in setting up both general blanket measures (such as solidarity funds and short-term unemployment schemes) and/or specific industry-related funds and grants (helping arthouse cinema and providing financial relief to producers and distributors). For its part, the EU has acted promptly to limit the spread of the virus and help EU countries to withstand its social and economic impact. In addition to the Coronavirus Response Investment Initiative (CRII) and the CRII+, both approved by the European Parliament and the Council in record time, the Commission has set up a Temporary Framework allowing EU countries to derogate from State aid rules, and proposed a European instrument for temporary support (SURE) to help protect jobs and workers affected by the coronavirus pandemic. -

Abstract When Netflix launched in April 1998, Internet video was in its infancy. Eighteen years later, Netflix has developed into the first truly global Internet TV network. Many books have been written about the five broadcast networks – NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and the CW – and many about the major cable networks – HBO, CNN, MTV, Nickelodeon, just to name a few – and this is the fitting time to undertake a detailed analysis of how Netflix, as the preeminent Internet TV networks, has come to be. This book, then, combines historical, industrial, and textual analysis to investigate, contextualize, and historicize Netflix's development as an Internet TV network. The book is split into four chapters. The first explores the ways in which Netflix's development during its early years a DVD-by-mail company – 1998-2007, a period I am calling "Netflix as Rental Company" – lay the foundations for the company's future iterations and successes. A common thread running through all definitions of social media is a blending of technology and social interaction for the co-creation of value. Social media are distinct from industrial or traditional media, such as newspapers, television, and film. They are relatively inexpensive and accessible to enable anyone (even private individuals) to publish or access information, compared to industrial media, which generally require significant resources to publish information.
