His prolific output, pioneering techniques, and innovative redefinitions of genres earned him such titles as “the Father of Manga”, “the godfather of manga” and “the god of manga”. He is often considered the Japanese equivalent to Walt Disney, and Disney served as a major inspiration during Tezuka’s formative years. Though this title reflects the quality of his early manga works for children and animations, it also sells short the significant influence of his later, more literary, gekiga works Dr Bean (高來圭) Anime–History Osamu Tezuka (手塚治虫) Alakazam the Great (西遊記) Black Jack 2 Doctors of Darkness Walt Disney Alakazam the Great (西遊記) Dr Bean (高來圭) Anime–History Osamu Tezuka (手塚治虫) Alakazam the Great (西遊記) Black Jack 2 Doctors of Darkness Walt Disney Original meaning Alakazam is an incantation or magic word along the lines of Abrakadabra Dr Bean (高來圭) Anime–History Osamu Tezuka (手塚治虫) Alakazam the Great (西遊記) Black Jack 2 Doctors of Darkness Walt Disney Wikipedia article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alakazam_the_Great Dr Bean (高來圭) Anime–History Osamu Tezuka (手塚治虫) Alakazam the Great (西遊記) Black Jack 2 Doctors of Darkness Walt Disney Reception in America Overrated (The opposite word is ”underrated*) Despite a large marketing budget, heavy editing and heavy promotion, the film was unsuccessful in America. Proselytization by fans ignited the anime movement in America, despite Japanese copyright holders’ abandonment of the American market. The author presents an historical and legal analysis to demonstrate that, at least in one case spanning two decades, fans’ continual infringement of copyright spurred the progress of commerce and the arts. 1 MIT Japan Program Working Paper Series 04.02 Center for International Studies Massachusetts Institute of Technology Room E38-7th Floor Cambridge, MA 02139 Phone: 617-252-1483 Fax: 617-258-7432 Date of Publication: November 2, 2004 © Sean Leonard 2 Table of Contents 1.
