ABSTRACT This report investigated the applications of sustainable development in Ecuador, as well as the processes and policies involved in community development. These investigations resulted in the tormulation of a methodology for co.inunity planning, which embodies the concepts of sustainable development. Existing methodologies for community development, for the introduction of environmentally conscious productive activities in communities, and for implementation of environmentally sound operations were used as tools in the development of our methodology. Too, personal experience and systematic evaluation using matrixes of criteria were utilized in definition and formuiation of our project. Effective application of this methodology may be utilized by both communities and institutions in future planning efforts. -

Attention has turned, therefore, to the legacy of outgoing President Rafael Correa’s decade in power. To that end, this paper examines one of Correa’s signature programmes, ‘Buen Vivir’ (Living Well), a strategic plan for development underscored by the indigenous Kichwa cosmology of ‘sumak kawsay’. Sumak kawsay is a notion that has been co-opted into policy mechanisms in an attempt to both challenge neoliberal modes of governance, and to disrupt the ontological bifurcation of nature and society. -

Staging lo Andino: the Scissors Dance, Spectacle, and Indigenous Citizenship in the New Peru DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Jason Alton Bush, MA Graduate Program in Theatre The Ohio State University 2011 Dissertation Committee: Lesley Ferris, Co-Advisor Katherine Borland, Co-Advisor Ana Puga Copyright by Jason Bush 2011 Abstract “Staging Lo Andino: Danza de las Tijeras, Spectacle, and Indigenous Citizenship in the New Peru,” draws on more than sixteen months of fieldwork in Peru, financed by Ohio State‟s competitive Presidential Fellowship for dissertation research and writing. I investigate a historical ethnography of the Peruvian scissors dance, an acrobatic indigenous ritual dance historically associated with the stigma of indigeneity, poverty, and devil worship. After the interventions of Peruvian public intellectual José María Arguedas (1911-1969), the scissors dance became an emblem of indigenous Andean identity and valued as cultural patrimony of the nation. Once repudiated by dominant elites because it embodied the survival of indigenous spiritual practices, the scissors dance is now a celebrated emblem of Peru‟s cultural diversity and the perseverance of Andean traditions in the modern world. I examine the complex processes whereby anthropologists, cultural entrepreneurs, cosmopolitan artists, and indigenous performers themselves have staged the scissors dance as a symbolic resource in the construction of the emergent imaginary of a “New Peru.” I use the term “New Peru” to designate a flexible repertoire of utopian images and discourses designed to imagine the belated overcoming of colonial structures of power and the formation of a modern nation with foundations in the Pre-Columbian past. -

Testing Ecuador’s Rights of Nature: Why Some Lawsuits Succeed and Others Fail Craig M. Kauffman and Pamela L. Martin Paper Presented at the International Studies Association Annual Convention Atlanta, GA, March 18, 2016 For eight years, scholars have celebrated Ecuador’s auspicious move to include rights of Nature (RoN) in its 2008 Constitution. The constitution pledges to build a new form of sustainable development based on the Andean Indigenous concept of sumak kawsay (buen vivir in Spanish), which is rooted in the idea of living in harmony with Nature. The Preamble “celebrates” Nature (Pachamama) and presents a guiding principle for the new development approach: that humans are part of Nature, and thus Nature is a vital part of human existence.1 Ecuador’s constitution presents buen vivir as a set of rights for humans, communities, and Nature, and thus portrays RoN as a tool for achieving sustainable development. While much is written on the ethical arguments regarding RoN (and buen vivir), very few studies analyze how RoN might be implemented. This paper begins to fill the gap by analyzing the application of RoN in Ecuador, the world’s first country to grant Nature constitutional rights. These rights immediately conflicted with the Ecuadorian government’s plans to expand large- scale mining and oil extraction to finance development projects. Numerous lawsuits were filed to protect Nature’s rights, including from economic development projects. Given the State’s plan to fuel economic growth through increased extractivism, including in fragile and protected ecological areas, Ecuador constitutes a “hard case” for implementing RoN. This paper presents a conceptual framework for understanding the tools and pathways through which Ecuador’s RoN are applied in practice and the reasons why these rights are upheld in some cases and not others. -

2018 TRAVEL and ACADEMIC INFORMATION The Politics of Land Use in Ecuador GEOG 195 / ENVS 196 Pucará, Imbabura, Ecuador Dear Students, Friends, and Parents, Hi. My name is Peter Shear, instructor for The Politics of Land Use in Ecuador (Geography 195/Environmental Studies 196), which will run between December 28th , 2017 and January 14th , 2018. The course promises to be adventurous, fun, and educationally rewarding. I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself, and then address some frequently asked questions and concerns regarding travel in Ecuador. Born in Royalton, Vermont, I now live in Pucará, Ecuador and am the father of two daughters (21 and 12). I have been organizing student trips and rural development projects in Guatemala, Puerto Rico and Ecuador since 1998. I have a Master’s degree in Political Geography from the University of Vermont and also direct the Inter-American Center for the Arts, Sustainability, and Action, a 501(c)3 entity that organizes educational exchanges, workshops, and volunteer work brigades in Guatemala, Puerto Rico, and Ecuador www.casainteram.org. I have been teaching Latin American Studies and Political Geography at the university level since 1997 and at UVM since 2002. Rousseau ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Malena Rousseau: Seeking Buen Vivir: Re-imagining Livelihoods in the Shifting Political Economic Landscape of Cangahua, Ecuador (Under the direction of Rudi Colloredo-Mansfeld) In 2008 the constitution of Ecuador was rewritten by its new president—Rafael Correa—to make buen vivir, or good living, the framework from which the government operated. The new constitution resulted in a national plan for good living/living well, El Plan Nacional de Buen Vivir, based on the Andean indigenous cosmovision of sumak kawsay, or living well. This plan is an ambitious attempt to improve quality of life in the nation by improving the accessibility and breadth of government-sponsored social programs dedicated to improving the livelihoods of Ecuador’s marginalized populations. At the same time, the structure and culture of historically marginalized communities in Ecuador are rapidly changing as their local economies increasingly engage with the global marketplace. My dissertation research examines how residents of Cangahua, a rural impoverished parish located an hour north of Quito, pursue lives of buen vivir while maintaining a resilient local culture despite limited prospects for economic prosperity and increased immersion in the global economy. -

XVI-XXI) Mirosław Mąka , Elżbieta Jodłowska Resumen El pishtaco andino es una de las fi guras más intrigantes y difíciles de defi nir dentro del imaginario po- pular. No cabe en ninguna de las categorías de seres sobrenaturales presentes en el universo de las creen- cias de los pueblos andinos. Crea su categoría propia, autónoma, que genéticamente radica tanto en la realidad histórica de las primeras décadas de la conquista, como en la mitología autóctona. Constituye una conceptualización y visualización de la trauma cultural muy profunda y fruto de su tratamiento sicológico que ha atribuido una cara y una fi gura a las amenazas existenciales nuevas. El temor ante lo desconocido implicaría un estado de desamparo y, en cambio, el temor ante un enemigo conocido permite elaborar una estrategia de defensa. En la mitología milenarista andina del periodo siguiente a la Conquista el pishtaco apareció como una fi gura simbólica personalizando al enemigo que va a desa- parecer solo cuando se reaviva el imperio Inca idealizado. El pishtaco no viene dotado de una sola cara o un solo aspecto. En los últimos 500 años aparecía llevando vestido de convento, del hacendado cruel, de un soldado, de un médico o cualquiera otro a quien los campesinos hubiesen reconocido como „ajeno”. Las visualizaciones más antiguas que se han descrito ya en el siglo XVI siguen siendo vivas y le suceden, sobreponiéndose a ellas, las visualizaciones siguientes, creadas más tarde. -
