Bouopda Tamo ABSTRACT Department of Biochemistry, Laboratory of Microbiology, An ethnopharmacology survey concerning the medicinal plants used in Bandjoun village (La'Djo) to cure University of Yaoundé I, PO Box infectious diseases was carried out in three districts of this village. The survey led to the identification of 79 812 Yaoundé, Cameroon medicinal plants species listed in 41 families. These plants were cited to be use to treat about 25 infectious diseases among which malaria, diarrhea and intestinal-worms were the most cited. Chromolaena odorata, S.H. Riwom Essama Voacanga africana, Moringa oleifera, Mammea africana, Euphorbia hirta, Psidium guajava, Allium cepa, Department of Microbiology, Enantia chlorantha, Alstonia boonei and Picralima nitida, were the ten most cited plants. Extractions of parts Laboratory of Microbiology, of these last plants were performed in hydro-ethanol (3:7) solvent and then tested in-vitro against an University of Yaoundé I, PO Box Escherichia coli isolate. Both species display the following floral structures: style-head bearing pollen translators, shelf-like nectaries, staminal feet, nectar-collecting troughs, trisegmented corolline corona lobes and corolla lobes, and anthers and nectaries covered by unicellular hairs. Lateral segments of adjacent corona lobes are fused with half of the adaxial base of the adjacent corolla lobes, creating openings through which pollinators can reach the nectar-collecting troughs in the corolla base. Flowers are rotate with spreading corolla lobes and exposed gynostegium, thus sorting in the open-access fly pollination system. The following features are useful to distinguish the flowers of the two species: corolla color, presence or absence of long unicellular hairs and white spots size on the adaxial surface of corolla lobes, translator length, pollen tetrads color, and presence or absence of linear tetrads. It seems that the floral modifications of the two Periploca species serve to optimize pollination efficiency by attracting a wide number of pollinators, thus enhancing the pollination success of plants. -

This project presents work on Voacanga africana (Apocynaceae) a local Ghanaian plant, in which the leaves and stem barks were screened for antioxidant and resistant modulatory properties. The antioxidant assay was determined using DPPH scavenging, total phenolic count and total antioxidant capacity. The antimicrobial and bacterial resistance modulation activity was determined using the broth dilution and agar well diffusion methods using S. aureus, E. coli, S. typhi, P. auregenosa, B. subtilis and Candida albicans. Further work was performed by looking at the phytochemical constituents of the extracts and isolates. The antioxidant activity as seen from the DPPH assay was concentration dependent with the methanolic extract of the stem bark showing more activity than the leaf, with Ic50 of 70 and 1605 respectively, whilst that of the standard (ascorbic acid) was 6.980. -

Accepted 24 September, 2008 The phytochemical and antioxidant properties of Strophantus hispidus (stem and root), Voacanga africana (stem and leaf) and Thevetia neriifolia (stem and leaf) were investigated. The parts of the plants used were based on those used locally. All the plants tested positive for the presence of tannins, flavonoids and cardiac glycosides, all except S. hispidus (stem) tested positive for the presence of anthraquinone. Only V. africana (stem and leaves) and Thevetia neriifolia (leaves) tested positive for the presence of saponins, all except S. hispidus (root) tested positive for the presence of terpenoids. Only V. africana leaves and T. neriifolia tested positive for the presence of phlobatannins. The free radical scavenging activities were investigated based on the presence of flavonoids and tannins in all the plant materials. Preliminary screening of the free radical scavenging activity of the methanolic extracts of the plants with 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) using thin layer chromatography only tested positive for V. africana leaves. IC50 values (concentration of sample required for 50% inhibition of DPPH radical scavenging activity) for the inhibition of DPPH were 0.048 and 0.054 mg/ml for V.
