Motif Interviews Scott Lucas from Local H On Jun 18, Local H, one of the most underrated alternative rock acts from the ‘90s, will grace the stage at The Met in Pawtucket. The duo, lead by Scott Lucas and best known for their alt-rock radio hit “Bound For The Floor,” is still going strong. They released their eighth album, Hey, Killer, last April and have maintained their reputation as a spectacular live act. Lucas and I had a chat recently about being in a 2-piece band before it was popular, being one of many artists who covered a Lorde song last year and the internet’s effect on the music industry. Rob Duguay: Local H got acclaim while being a 2-piece band way before bands like The White Stripes, The Black Keys & Death From Above 1979 were making the duo band setup popular. When all of that was happening in the 2000s, what were your initial thoughts? Did you think they were ripping you off? Scott Lucas: No, not at all. I felt more validated than anything else. It gave me the chance to say, “See, it really is a good idea.” That’s what was cool about it. RD: When you were starting out did anyone ask you where the bass player was or where’s your other guitarist? SL: All the time. We always had people coming up and offering their services to be our bass player. We got that all the time. There were a couple of situations with labels where they wanted us to get a bass player and the deal would fall apart because we weren’t interested in that.

Local H PUTC Tour
An evening with Local H — featuring a 20th anniversary performance of Pack Up The Cats in its entirety. In 1996 Local H released “As Good As Dead”, their most commercially successful record to date — but it was 1998’s album “Pack Up The Cats” that garnered the band universal acclaim and solidified the 2 piece rock band as one of the greats of the era. Local H has never stopped, making records and touring ever since, and this fall the band will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the release of “Pack Up The Cats” with a very special tour. This promises to be a unique experience for the audience as the band will be performing two sets of material—most importantly, one set devoted to recreating the album in its entirety with the help of some special guests including legendary Naked Raygun/PEGBOY guitarist John Haggerty. Local H, the iconic alt-rock duo known for their blistering live shows and pioneering the two- piece band set-up, is at the top of their game more than two decades after they first burst onto the music scene. Frontman Scott Lucas, who covers both guitar and bass (through an extra pick up in his guitar), and drummer Ryan Harding have enjoyed a resurgence in recent years, buoyed by global touring along with the release of some of their most critically acclaimed work to date. The last 12 months has seen the band continue to tour extensively not only as headliners, but on hugely successful tours with The Toadies and Helmet and —perhaps most exciting of all— career highlight performances on Metallica's sold out stadium tour.

Alt-Nation: Festivals in Flux Festivals in Flux In local music, breaking news is kind of rare. Sure, bands put out albums and play shows, but those are more the result of months of work and planning than anything suddenly happening. But Liberty Fest had some breaking news as the steward of Liberty Fest decided to move the festival a mere week before its scheduled date from Dusk to Simon’s 677. The reasoning behind the move is that in order to run a second stage, Dusk would have to assume a significant financial risk to rent the equipment necessary. Dusk proposed adding “$3 suggested donation” to the show featuring over 40 acts to help cover the costs. The steward of Liberty Fest would not assume any of the financial burdens or accept any cover charge for the event that has traditionally been a free neighborhood block party. So last Saturday Liberty Fest announced the show was moving to Simon’s, which has its own outdoor stage already, eliminating a significant financial investment and keeping the event free. So same bands, same times, different venue a half mile away – sounds so simple, right? Well, not so fast. Dusk quickly mobilized and announced they will be throwing a free one stage Fourth of July bash called Revival Fest. To muddy the waters, many of the better-known bands like World’s Greatest Lover, Happiness, VulGarrity, Fabulous Itchies, Hope Anchor, Gavage, Sire and more dropped out of Liberty Fest to play Revival Fest. So this 4th of July there’ll be two big free local shows to choose from: Revival Fest with the more established bands at Dusk or Liberty Fest with who knows what at press time at Simon’s 677.
