The Full English digital archive (www.vwml.org) continues to provide access to thousands of records detailing traditional folk songs, music, dances, customs and traditions that were collected from across the country. Boone, Advisor Johanna Devaney Anna Gawboy Copyright by Dana Lauren DeVlieger 2016 Abstract “Whiskey in the Jar” is a traditional Irish song that is performed by musicians from many different musical genres. However, because there are influential recordings of the song performed in different styles, from folk to punk to metal, one begins to wonder what the role of the song’s Irish heritage is and whether or not it retains a sense of Irish identity in different iterations. The current project examines a corpus of 398 recordings of “Whiskey in the Jar” by artists from all over the world.     Dear Teacher: Welcome to New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music, an exhibition organized by the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum on Main Street program and brought to you by your state humanities council. These materials and activities were compiled to help your students observe, imagine, learn & contribute to the discussion of American roots music during their visit to the exhibition. While it’s desirable to participate in each step, it’s certainly not required. In fact, each individual piece will provide your students with thought-provoking questions and activities. You can easily customize lessons or even develop your own methods of exploring roots music! The lesson plans that accompany New Harmonies will help you create a meaningful experience for your students. Each includes Pre-visit, Visit, and Post-visit activities. All the lessons can be adapted for younger or older audiences, so evaluate each lesson before selecting activities for your students. The Pre-visit step is designed to be simple, to introduce the students to the exhibit topic, and to be easy to implement. (Music playing) N: With its roots dating back to China thousands of years ago, the popularity of this instrument took off in the early nineteenth century in Europe. N: By the mid 1800s, immigrants had brought the accordion to Texas, where it became emblematic in the way different ethnic groups have shared their musical heritage and influences. (Music playing) N: Patented in 1829 by an Austrian named Cyrill Demian, the accordion spread quickly throughout Europe. N: From Ireland to Russia, versatility and sheer volume of this instrument attracted folk musicians who adapted it to their own style of music. N: However, it was the Germans, Czechs, and French who forever changed Texas music with their use of the accordion. Sizeable communities of Sudanese live in Omaha and Lincoln, for example. Below are just two examples of African music and dance forms present in the state. Charles Ahovissi of Lincoln, Nebraska is originally from Benin. He performs traditional African dances from his homeland Michael Opoku and Ashanti – Michael Opoku of Lincoln Nebraska is a native of Accra, Ghana in West Africa. He is a multi-instrumentalist and band leader and his group Ashanti plays both traditional Ghanaian music and more contemporary numbers. Ashanti also features traditional dances from Ghana and other areas of Africa. Michael is an artist in schools for the Nebraska Arts Council, and teaches classes on African drumming and cultural traditions. African American Blues The blues is a distinctive traditional style of music that uses “blue notes” (sung or played at a lower pitch than those of the major scale) to emphasize the sadness of its subject matter. The most classic form of the blues has three lines of lyrics and is and played with a 12 bar chord progression. Eight bar blues songs are also common. The blues was created by African American musicians in the rural south in the latter half of the 19 th century. By: Rebecca Emma Dellow A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Sheffield Faculty of Arts and Humanities Department of Music June 2018 2 Abstract Fiddlers’ Tunebooks are handwritten manuscript books preserving remnants of a largely amateur, monophonic, instrumental practice. These sources are vastly under- explored academically, reflecting a wider omission in scholarship of instrumental music participated in by ‘ordinary’ people in nineteenth-century England. The tunebooks generate interest amongst current folk music enthusiasts, and as such can be subject to a “burden of expectation”,1 in the belief that they represent folk music tradition. Yet both the concepts of tradition and folk music are problematic. By considering folk music from both an inherited perspective and a modern scholarly interpretation, this thesis examines the place of the tunebooks in notions of English folk music tradition. A historical musicological methodology is applied to three post-1850 case-study manuscripts drawing specifically on source studies, archival research and quantitative analysis. The study explores compilers’ demographic traits and examines content, establishing the existence of a heterogeneous repertoire copied from contemporary textual sources directly into the tunebooks. This raises important questions regarding the role played by publishers and the concept of continuous survival in notions of tradition. A significant finding reveals the interaction between aural and literate practices, having important implications in the inward and outward transmission and in wider historical application. The function of both the manuscripts and the musical practice is explored and the compilers’ acquisition of skill and sources is examined.

According to Norwegian folk lore, fossegrimen are fiddle-playing Sunday, June 24, 2007 supernatural beings that dwell noon-4 pm beneath waterfalls. The members Shelter 1, of the group Fossegrimen, Alton Baker Park, however, are members of a Eugene dans orkester that is dedicated to performing folk dance music from Norway and Sweden. The group plays for monthly dances in Salem and occasionally in the Portland and Seattle areas. Fossegrimen was Dancing founded by David and Claire Elliker-Vågsberg. David directs the group and performs on fiddle, the NorwegianHardanger fiddle and Swedish Families nyckelharpa. Claire plays fiddle, viola and nyckelharpa. The other members are: Kurt Elliker, fiddle; Brian Wood, guitar andnyckelharpa ; Potluck and John Blunt, bass. On special occasions Fossegrimen members wear, regional costumes from Norway, knowns as bunader. Fun The hardingfele (Hardanger fiddle) andnyckelharpa are the national Music folk instruments of Norway and Sweden, respectively. The feature that most distinguishes the Norwegian Hardanger fiddle from the regular fiddle or violin is the set of four or five sympathetic strings that run Join us! beneath the fingerboard and add droning overtones to the sound.     FACTFILE: GCSE MUSIC Musical Traditions in Ireland The Musical Traditions in Ireland module covers a range of instrumental and vocal folk music that can be heard both locally and globally. It is hard to separate Irish traditional from Ulster Scots music as they have the same origins and share a wide range of repertoire. Some instruments, such as the fife and bagpipes, are more commonly played in Ulster Scots music rather than in Irish Traditional music. TRADITIONAL INSTRUMENTS STRING INSTRUMENTS Fiddle Are the fiddle and the violin the same instrument? Yes, but it is the style of music that tells us which label to use. If the musician is playing folk, they will call the instrument a fiddle, e.g. American Bluegrass fiddling. If they are playing Classical music, the musician will call it a violin. Banjo The banjo is a four string instrument. It has a fretted neck similar to a guitar and is played using a pick. The banjo is naturally a loud instrument. It has a distinctive sound and melodies are ornamented with snappy triplets. Harp The harp can play both melody and chords. It often plays a syncopated accompaniment pattern.
