 President

2010 has been another successful year for Hockey WA both on and off the field. My final year as President has seen the completion of our 2007-2010 strategic plan together with a large amount of work by the Board and Staff in developing our next strategic plan to take us through to 2015.

Hockey WA continues to be one of the leading State Sporting Organisations in Australia and 2010 has seen a further increase in co-operation between us and other State Hockey Associations. We remain a highly efficient and effective organisation that continues to be looked upon in high regard by many hockey and non-hockey organisations. A healthy level of reserve funds together with committed government Chief Executive Officer funding to aid future turf replacement has shown that Hockey WA continues to be run in line with good business Hockey WA has had an exciting and challenging year and I am practice. My thanks go to Chairman of the Audit, Finance happy to report growth and stability in the clubs and regional and Governance Committee Phil Nillsen, Finance Manager associations. My 3 years as Hockey WA is able to provide the best possible service to our President would not have been possible without the work members. We are certainly not infallible, but hockey is held and support of those around me. Thank you to the Board in very high regard within the wider sporting community of Directors for their loyalty, commitment and support, and and this is a great tribute to everyone involved in playing, particularly Vice President Peter Churack. Finally, I must thank our Chief Executive Officer, Kevin Knapp Kevin Knapp and his management team. I wish our new President, Kevin CEO and the staff of Hockey WA all the best as they guide our sport forward. Thank you to every one.

Tony Leeflang President Team numbers in twelve clubs increased, with 8 of these clubs adding more than one team. Most new teams came from the junior section, with Riverside Lions experiencing the most growth in this area. Rangers and Southern River again showed significant growth – Rangers for the sixth consecutive year and Southern River for the fourth since their inception.

2010 marked the first year that all 24 affiliated regional associations provided their membership database via HockeyNet. This data revealed that there are more than 10 000 hockey players competing in competitions throughout country WA. The continued use of the HockeyNet program will allow us to track regional participation statistics in the same way we do for the metropolitan clubs and has been a strategic priority for Hockey WA over the past three years.

Another strategic priority was to create a hockey presence in under-serviced areas. Three metropolitan areas were identified to establish recruitment programs in – Atwell, Quinns Rocks and Ellenbrook. All three programs were located in high population-growth areas where young families are prevalent, thus providing a good match for hockey. Joondalup Lakers and Eastern Blades must be recognised for their assistance with the Quinns Rocks and Ellenbrook programs, along with the Australian Sports Commission’s Active After-school Communities program which provided support during the recruitment phase.

Hockey WA’s Officiating Reference Panel has been in action since 2009, overseeing all aspects of umpiring. One aim was to increase the number of elite player-umpires. The net result of the changes has been an additional 24 men’s teams during this period. In the new Hockey Australia Futures Program targeting even younger athletes, John Parry, Frank Main, Jamie Williamson, Mathew Lim, Karla Barrett, Kyra Flynn, Penny Squib and Katy Symons were identified. Katy Symons was also selected for her first Australian tour to Japan in October.

Representing Australia on field in a different capacity were Don Prior, who was the Umpires Manager at the 2010 Men’s World Cup, Murray Grime, who umpired at the Men’s Champions Trophy and Melissa Trivic, who umpired at the Commonwealth Games.

In order to limit the problems that arose in 2006 with the in- field sprinklers causing uneven areas in the turf, we decided, Sally Bell after a great deal of research, to replace them with TG101 High Performance Manager cannons. This required major works to the irrigation system and a new pump. We are already noticing a reduction in water use, but will continue to monitor this closely. We also took the opportunity to link the field 1 and field 2 sprinkler systems so that in an emergency, either field tank can supply both fields for a short space of time.

Curtin University advised us in 2009 that they were changing over to a high voltage electricity supply and we would need to replace our transformer. After protracted discussions, Curtin University agreed to replace the main switchboard and the transformer at their cost. The contractor and the university worked very efficiently and were magnificent in scheduling around our needs to complete all of the work in non-hockey hours, except for one morning when they had to disconnect the old system and connect the new system. Staff were pleased to work from home so it was a win-win situation.

With the Department of Sport and Recreation’s approval, we used funds we had remaining from a grant for office carpets and blinds to re-concrete the area of the concourse that was previously covered by increasingly decrepit, one

Unfortunately, despite all these good works, we have had a change in tariff for our electricity use, and our budgeted electricity cost for next year will double. Our electricity is billed directly from the university and we have been on a very good rate with them for a very long time. However, with their major electricity works completed, the university Hospitality Bar and Catering has reviewed all their lessees’ rates. WA has had another busy year hosting teams. New Zealand men and women and Korea women played practice matches and tests in February and March. Many of the games were played at satellite turfs providing these clubs with fantastic opportunities to promote elite hockey locally.

The very successful Australian Indoor Under 18 Championship was held in Perth in January and WA hosted a leg of Round 2 in the Women’s AHL in May.

The Malaysian men had a training camp and played the SmokeFree WA Thundersticks and the AIS in May. Argentina men played two Tests against the Kookaburras in September as well as practising against the AIS. The event was the first men’s hockey International held in the winter season in many years and around 4500 people attended the games. Finance

Committees This year overall Hockey WA is performing better than to 2010 budget expectations, with favourable variance in some areas (increased participation, unanticipated special events) and unfavourable variance in other areas (drop in anticipated sponsorship, reduced bank interest).

In contrast, the Perth Hockey Stadium has had an interesting trading year, with an unscheduled warranty turf replacement on PHS1 being undertaken in April 2010 causing some disruption to the beginning of the season. We took the opportunity at that time to upgrade the watering systems on PHS and make minor changes to PHS2. During the year we were advised of very substantial increased utilities charges (mainly electricity, and to a lesser extent water), some of which had been anticipated, but will only heavily impact us going into 2011. This has lead to a major rethink by us on how PHS is to operate with user-pay principles for its charges to the membership, into the future. Over the last few years, avid watchers of the game will have noticed a steady increase in the number of interstate and international players playing in our Premier One Competitions. Whilst this influx of talented players has added to the overall strength of the playing group of most clubs, some are concerned that we are limiting the opportunities for our home-grown junior players.

The HPCC in conjunction with the Premier One Advisory Group (POAG) were asked to give the board some options to limit the number of import players and maximise the chances for our own athletes to prosper. Both the Men’s and Women’s country weeks went very well, many thanks to the committee who worked behind the scenes to make these events happen. Like any sport, hockey does not happen without umpires. Thank you all for your time and effort.

Congratulations to the winners of each division, to the fairest and best players and to the leading goal scorers in all divisions. Congratulations also to the players, thank you for your participation in these events and it was great to see some great hockey played, friendships rekindled and new ones made.

To the country men’s team that represented WA in the national championships, many thanks for your efforts; to the coach Andrew Corner and manager Rodney Thornton, thank you for your effort and commitment to the team.

It was disappointing that the women’s team could not participate this year as we were not able to secure an off- field team. We have now hopefully put things in place to ensure that this will not happen again.

We had more players nominating this year than we have had for many years, but could not get a coach or manager in place in the time frame that we agreed upon. In the future let us all get out and make sure that we have those positions filled well before the nomination date closes. The AIS tour to Germany in December 2009 included Jason Black, George Watts, and Trent Mitton. An Australian Men’s Indoor Team also competed in Russia and the Czech Republic and included George Watts, Graham Watts, Evan Kelly, Darren Parkes and David Orr.

The State Indoor Competition ran from October 2009 to March 2010 and was again a huge success. The competition has grown in size greatly in the last few seasons. Credit has to go to Victoria Park who won both the Women’s and Men’s Division 1 titles.

As we all know the games could not go ahead if it wasn’t for the umpires. This year Ryan Briggs was voted Indoor Umpire of the Year, with Craig Orr voted as the Most Promising Indoor Umpire.

Special thanks to all committee members for their dedication and hard work throughout the season: John Nettleton, Ryan Briggs, Fiona Young, Dan Scott and Claire French. With the continued efforts of the committee and the support of the large numbers of volunteers, there is no doubt that indoor hockey in WA will continue to grow and prosper.

Credit also has to go to the Under 18 Men who secured second place and a silver medal at the Under 18 Indoor National Championships. From this tournament players were selected for a Talent Identification Camp held in Canberra in March. WA athletes selected to attend were Rachel Frusher, Ashley Quartermaine, Tandia Wilkinson, Frank Main and David Richardson.

The Australian Women’s Indoor Squad competed in Malaysia in Jan/Feb 2009 and Fiona Young, Kellie McLeish, Nicola Farrow, Lauren Austin, Emily Carroll were selected from WA along with Coach Mark Sandhu and the Manager Nicola Ogden.

It was disappointing to cancel the Over-55 grade in 2010, with teams who nominated being allocated to Over-50 division three and Over-60 under a permitting arrangement. However, the Over-40 competition became nine teams again after considerable effort in previous years to achieve this.

A highlight of the year was the performance of State Veterans Teams at the National Championships held in September and October. Six women’s teams, Over-35 to Over-60, travelled to Canberra and eight men’s teams, Over-40 to Over-70, travelled to Bunbury and Busselton. Championship winners were the Over-40 and Over-55 Women’s teams and the Over-40, Over-45, Over-55, Over-60 and in division two, the Over-50 and -55 teams.

All teams in both championships performed well, with only one team not participating in the finals. This was the strongest performance by state teams for many years and great deal of credit for this result goes to the coaches and managers of the teams. The win by the Over-40 Men’s team was the first in 21 years, a fantastic result.

WA players were also strongly represented in the national Veterans teams selected to play in 2011 international tournaments. 15 players were selected for women’s national representation The Veterans Committee has the responsibility of and 20 players for men’s national teams, with a combined overseeing all metropolitan Veterans’ competitions and the total of 22 train-on players.
