Hockey WA continues to be one of the leading State Sporting Organisations in Australia and 2008 has seen a further increase in co-operation between us and other State Hockey Associations. We remain a highly efficient and effective organisation that continues to be looked upon in high regard by many hockey and non-hockey organisations. A healthy level of reserve funds together with committed government funding to aid future turf replacement has shown that Hockey WA continues to be run in line with good business practice. Nevertheless, we managed to survive the season and our small panel of Hockey WA umpires did an absolutely amazing job to cover as many games as they did, with barely a complaint about the workload or the need for constant change to ensure the many variables were covered each week.

For the most part, teams have understood the importance of providing the right person for the job. Some clubs have tackled the job of providing own umpires in a thoroughly professional manner, and Hockey WA has asked some of them to be role models for other clubs of similar size, who have struggled to find a way to manage their commitments. Some teams were remiss in taking their responsibility seriously in 2008, and thus the standard was occasionally below par for the grade; however, we were usually alerted to these instances by comments on the card or notification from a team official and took action to try and avoid future occurrences.

Aaron Hopkins suffered a major blow in his bid for Olympic selection after sustaining a serious calf muscle injury in the four-nation tournament in Darwin.

Bevan George was honoured at the WAIS Champions breakfast in May, receiving the Chairman’s Award. George received the award on his ability to continually show the values of teamwork, leadership and sportsmanship combined with a high level of skill and outstanding performances at all levels of hockey.

In June, George, Kavanagh and Brown were all selected for the 2008 Champion’s Trophy squad that competed in Rotterdam, Holland. Australia ensured that it would enter the Beijing Olympic Games as gold medal favourites after storming through the competition and defeating Spain 4-1

The SmokeFree WA Diamonds faced the task of trying to win three AHL titles in a row, probably one of the toughest tasks in the current AHL format at the moment.

After competing in all AHL finals in the last four years the opportunity for this team and this group of players to be recognised as one of the most successful sporting teams in Western Australia. The team was well supported by a selection Panel consisting of Noel Morrison, Troy Kelly and David Yu. The coaching panel was made up of David Yu (assistant Coach), Chris O’Rielly (Video Technician), Chris Munro (GK Coach), Hayley Patton (Manager) Fiona Chromiak (Physiotherapist) and Melissa Luff (Assistant Video Operator).

The SmokeFree WA Diamonds squad of 26 players was selected in September 2007 and announced at the Wizard Home Loans dinner. Due to an Olympic year the League was reduced to a two week format, which meant the old fashioned National Championship days of playing nine games in twelve days.
