President

PRESIDENT

2004 saw hockey in Western Australia take on a new shape – operating under the administration of one association.

With the challenges and distractions of 2003 well and truly behind us, 2004 presented us all with new opportunities. The new structure implemented in 2004 has I believe made hockey stronger in Western Australia as we operate more effectively and make better use of our financial, human and physical resources.

This successful year of transition has been achieved through the hard work and commitment of a great many people and I would like to thank in particular my fellow Board Members – David Miller (Vice-President), Nola Bezant, Colin Howell, Rob Fawkes, Kerry Foote, Kim Jones and Tony Leeflang – your support of me personally and for hockey in general is greatly appreciated.

2004 saw many successes for our great sport both at home and away and I would particularly like to acknowledge both of our national teams - the Kookaburras and the Hockeyroos -for their tremendous achievements. and deserve special mention for their selection in the national teams and competing in the Athens Olympics. These achievements would not have been possible without the significant support of the coaching staff and the AIS Hockey Unit staff. With Western Australia securing the rights to host the AIS Hockey Unit/Hockey Australia High Performance Program here in Perth for the next four years I am confident that the achievements demonstrated during 2004 will only be further improved in the years to come.

Back home in 2004, our state teams performed on the national stage with distinction. In March, the Smokefree WA Thundersticks finished runners-up to the Blades in the final of the Australian Hockey League in Melbourne. Our Smokefree WA Diamonds shone before a home crowd as Western Australia hosted the women’s Australian Hockey League. In a wonderful finish to the tournament, they took their first national title since 1994, defeating the Canberra Labor Club Strikers 2-1. Both of these teams featured impressive performances from a large group of players who I know have the ability to join our national teams in the near future.

The Western Australian women’s country team finished runners up to Queensland and our men’s country team fourth.

Our men’s and women’s under 21s both finished runners up in their national championships. In the under 18’s, our women finished third while the men returned national champions, winning the final in an exciting penalty shoot out. Our youngest state representative teams – our under 15’s men and women both gave strong showings in their respective championships. Both teams competed in their grand finals but were unfortunately not successful in bringing home the flag.

HOCKEY WA ANNUAL REPORT Page 7

President

Our Men’s and Women’s State Veteran’s teams also continued to demonstrate Western Australia’s strong on-field (and dare I say it off-field) performance in 2004 with hard fought contests in all age groups. Our Women’s Veterans’ prowess was further demonstrated through the successful hosting of the 2004 Women’s Championships with positive comments flowing throughout the tournament and beyond.

Success at international, national and state level is built upon a solid foundation of strong clubs at our local level. Clubs are where players get their first taste of the game, play and develop as juniors and move through the ranks to senior hockey. Here in Western Australia we are fortunate that our clubs continue to prosper both on and off the field and I thank all those involved in an official or non-official capacity at club level who volunteer their time and effort for the good of our sport. Without these volunteers our successes could not be achieved and I encourage all of you to get behind your clubs and actively participate in shaping the future of our sport.

Volunteers are a huge part of our sport and Hockey WA’s administrative strengths in 2004 are in no small part due to the contribution of a large base of volunteers in our committee structure. Whilst I would like to name all involved, the fear of omitting someone sees me refrain from doing so but I would like to express my appreciation to all those people who have shown through the committee structure that hockey in Western Australia is blessed with talented people both on and off the field.

WA Hockey is also grateful for the strong support of our sponsors and partners many of whom have a long association with our sport. In particular, I thank our sponsors Healthway, Goundrey Wines, Cadbury Schweppes, Swan Brewery, Gryphon Hockey, Hockey Action and Hockey International and our partners the Department of Sport and Recreation, Perth Hockey Stadium and Curtin University of Technology. The WA Institute of Sport and the Australian Institute of Sport deserve special mention for their continued contributions to our programs, on whom we rely so heavily.

As I continue to learn more about our sport and our history I must pass on my personal thanks to our Life Members for your support and acceptance of me and for your guidance as we all move together towards furthering our tremendous history as one Association.

Before I close there is a very special group of people to whom, I believe we all owe a great deal of thanks - our staff at Hockey WA. In 2004, we secured the services of a very experienced Chief Executive Officer in Linda Hamersley who has been instrumental in ensuring that the “bedding down” of the new administration for hockey in this state has continued on a path of success. Linda has been well supported by all our current staff - Grant Mitton, Gwyn Jones, Jean Schonberg, Laraine Waldron, Sue Cook, Nadine Richards, Alex Johnston, Damien Todorovic and newest recruit Alison Burge. Thanks also to those staff who have moved on during 2004 - Ralph Wood, Cheryl Sweeting, Tammy Lugg and David Griffiths for their significant contributions and our best wishes to you all for your future endeavours.

HOCKEY WA ANNUAL REPORT Page 8

President / Chief Executive Officer

The efforts of all of these people during 2004 have been tremendous and I am confident that with their continued contributions Hockey WA are well placed for the future.

In 2004 we can rightly feel proud of our achievements and as we seek to take on the challenges of the future and steer hockey in WA on to bigger and better things I feel confident of our collective abilities in achieving even greater success in the future.

May I take this last opportunity of wishing all within our hockey community a safe and prosperous “off season” and I look forward to 2005 with enthusiasm and anticipation to the opportunities that lay ahead.

Yours in hockey

Ceri Writer

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

2004 has been a very busy year and I would like to offer my congratulations to all of our State Teams on the successes they achieved during this year and to all the players that made up the Goundrey Cup and League Competition and the Metropolitan and State Leagues.

2004 has seen many changes in the workload for the staff with the formalization of Hockey WA and both competitions being conducted by the one Association. I am fortunate to work with a very dedicated team and they should be commended in the way they have adapted to the new structure, a new Chief Executive Officer and for the welcome they have extended to the three new staff employed during the year.

Throughout the year, reviews of our processes were undertaken and a number of forums held to seek input from the hockey community to ensure we are moving towards what our stakeholders want or need. In essence, we have been asking what it is that is required and working towards that goal. 2005 will continue in this manner with a number of follow-up forums to be held at which time we can assess the changes and determine if we are succeeding or if further changes are required. The Hockey WA Administration is set on a path to review our processes and offer the best services for our members. I thank all the volunteers who have provided their knowledge and assistance in these forums.

A major accomplishment during the year saw the drafting of a new three-year Strategic Plan for implementation in 2005. With the assistance of the Department of Sport and Recreation, a planning workshop was held over two days in late July with 29 attendees. The attendees were made up of Board Directors, Committee representatives and specialist advisors. Over the course of the weekend a draft plan was created to be further refined by a strategic planning working group. The working group consists of Board Directors and group facilitators. With input from all the original workshop attendees, the working group then set the priorities and attached key performance

Chief Executive Officer

indicators to the objectives. The Board will be approving the final plan for adoption and implementation through 2005. Following the Board approval, the administration will formulate operational plans to meet our goals. The strategic plan will be communicated to our clubs, regional associations and other stakeholders in early 2005. The Department of Sport and Recreation supported the planning process through both funding and the allocation of two support staff and we are very appreciative of their advice and assistance.

A thorough review of our risk management process was also undertaken this year, with the result being a twelve month plan to reduce Hockey WA’s exposure to risk. During 2005 workshops will be conducted to assist clubs and regional associations implement new policies and procedures to reduce their level of risk.

I have attended many Committee meetings and am impressed with the level of commitment from all the Committee Convenors and members. It would be an understatement to say they are dedicated people with the benefit of all hockey players in their minds when they volunteer their time to what can sometimes be a thankless and frustrating task. So, on behalf of the hockey community I would like to thank each person who has contributed to the Committee structure throughout the year.

Hockey WA again received considerable financial support from the State Government in the Healthway sponsorship and the Department of Sport and Recreation Sports Lotteries Account funding. We have worked in a cohesive manner with both Departments to ensure the continuation of this funding. More than that though is our desire to see both Departments achieving the results they wish to obtain through their support, as it is this that will seal our continued and even increased levels of future financial support.

With the Finance Departments ongoing review and updating of policies and procedures, an improved budget setting process and reporting mechanism, the 2004 Audited Financial Statements should meet or exceed budget forecasts. I look forward to presenting the Financial Statements in February 2005.

As with all non professional sports, the competition would not succeed without the support and dedication of volunteers both at Club/Regional Association and Hockey WA level. On behalf of the Administration, we thank everyone who has assisted and look forward to their continuing involvement.

In closing I would like to sincerely thank our President, Ceri Writer, the Board Members and staff of Hockey WA for the support they have provided me in my first year as Chief Executive Officer. I look forward to working with the hockey community during 2005; implementing our Strategic Plan and progressing our sport.

Development Department

DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT

With the support of new Chief Executive Officer, Linda Hamersley, the Development Department embarked on major change in 2004. This focused on redefining its role more towards improvement of existing programs and the design of new ones, requiring less involvement in ongoing implementation. This was identified as a necessary change for our sport in an attempt to ‘kick start’ growth through new innovation after an extended period of repetition.

Volunteer committees were also targeted to mirror this change so as to provide much needed support and a broader base of expertise and knowledge. The philosophy and practicalities of this change were communicated to the Junior, Senior, Officiating, Elite and Indoor Committees through the first half of 2004 with all groups supportive.

Having successfully re-defined the role of both the Development Department and targeted volunteer committees, Hockey WA is now in a much stronger position to address the major issues that are holding our sport back in all sorts of different areas. This long-term process commenced in the second half of 2004, and the challenge still remains to firstly develop the strategies to grow our sport, and secondly to adequately resource those strategies for successful implementation.

The priority areas that have been identified are: 1. Junior recruitment. This includes steps to provide support to clubs and country associations conducting minkey, and utilization of the new Hockey Australia program ‘Hook In 2 Hockey’. 2. Retention between junior and senior club competitions. Competition format, timing, and turf exposure are seen as crucial aspects that require change. 3. Volunteer umpiring commitments. This is having a two-fold impact on senior participation. The untried and unprepared umpire does not enjoy the experience due to the level of abuse and the two participating teams do not enjoy the experience due to poor umpiring. Both scenarios are probably causing players to drop out of our sport. 4. Individual elite player development. Comparing state team results with numbers of individuals in senior national teams and squads indicates that we are adept at producing very good teams across both genders and all age groups, but ineffectual at producing all-round high quality individual players.

While the change of role within the Development Department has enabled efforts of a more strategic nature to commence, the transition is not yet fully complete. It still requires a considerable allocation of time to implement established programs throughout 2004 including Metropolitan schools, junior elite regional championships and talent squads, coaching and officiating courses, junior state championships and minkey carnivals, junior umpiring, and support of country development programs in Geraldton, Narrogin, Peel, South West and Albany.

HOCKEY WA ANNUAL REPORT Page 11

Country Committee

Last but not least, I would like to thank the numerous volunteers that have contributed their time and expertise on a range of different committees and issues this year. It has been invaluable, and a significant contribution to the development program. Without exception I hope that after a good break over the summer you continue to be involved next year and beyond, as we attempt to facilitate productive change for our sport.

Grant Mitton

COUNTRY COMMITTEE

One of the main obstacles for the Country Committee members is the distance needed to travel to attend a meeting. With this in mind, to have successfully had four meetings during the season has been an achievement.

I would like to thank the following committee members who represent all Country Associations: Beverley Blake (Mortlock), Lorraine Browning (Avon), Ben Curtis (Esperance), Marie Cross (Bunbury), Damian Della (Avon), Julie French (Geraldton), Barry Scott (Bunbury), Chris Scott (Bunbury), Rodney Thornton (Roe Districts), Denise Willcock (Mandurah), Jan McKenzie (UGS), Kerry Foote (Board Liaison) and Laraine Waldron (Office support). Thanks also to Linda Hamersley (CEO) and Ceri Writer (President of Hockey WA) for attending the meetings.

As the distance people travel and geographic location is varied, so are the problems that country people face. On saying this, some things never change no matter where you are including umpiring and declining player and volunteer base just to name a few. I strongly encourage country associations to utilize the programmes and personnel that are offered from Hockey WA as a means of countering some of these challenges.

State Men’s and Women’s country championships are always hot topics and the committee is in the process of drawing up a new charter, rules, guidelines for fixturing, allocation of umpires and directions for managers and coaches of touring sides. With “hockey” being the main focus, I am sure all this will be amicably resolved.

Thank you to the following coaches and mangers of the senior country touring sides that played in Adelaide this year: x Women: Keith Preen, Coach and Beverley Blake, Manager. x Men: Gordon Summers, Coach; Chris Scott, Manager and Dale Williams, Assistant Manager.

The Women’s side lost a closely fought final to Queensland 2-1 in extra time to finish runners up and the men’s team finished fourth.

With season 2004 at an end, we can look forward to the many opportunities and challenges in 2005 and continuing to support our sport.

Elite Performance & Indoor Committee

ELITE PERFORMANCE COMMITTEE

We returned to a joint committee format in 2004 which proved to be very successful. I thank Colin Brandis, Ann Prior, Adele Boyce, Graham Reid, Rechelle Hawkes, Neil Hawgood, Kevin Knapp and Colin Howell for their time and contribution throughout the year.

The draft of Australian Institute of Sport athletes into the Goundrey Cup and League competitions and inclusion of import players in our Thundersticks and Diamonds teams, again presented some delicate issues for the committee to consider. They were handled professionally within the policy guidelines previously established and resulted in positive outcomes for all concerned.

This committee also considered the issue of above age state team selection with an objective to improve management of individual player workloads, increase the size of our talent pool, and at the same time ensure that fast-tracking of suitable athletes was not overlooked. Policy guidelines were established and will be implemented in 2005 to provide direction in this area to selectors.

Thundersticks players joined the Diamonds for the first time in a requirement to partly fund their own involvement in the Australian Hockey League. This committee acted on behalf of the players to ensure this requirement was kept to a minimum so that the quality of the programs were not compromised to enable Western Australia to maintain its status near the top on a consistent basis. We were also instrumental in establishing a structure where fundraising and sponsorship efforts could be improved, where the association could assist in this process, and players could benefit directly.

Results prove that while we are a dominant state in relation to the performances of our male and female representative teams, our ability to convert this into representatives in the Kookaburras and Hockeyroos fall well below expectations. Bevan George and Emily Halliday were our only representatives in Athens. It should also be acknowledged however that only missed selection through injury. There must be reasons for this and the major challenge for this committee next year is to find and implement solutions.

Grant Mitton

INDOOR COMMITTEE

In the 2003/04 Indoor Hockey season, Western Australia fielded 6 state teams. The U/18 Men and Women competed in the National Championships held in Mandurah in January. The U/21 and Senior Men and Women competed in the National Championships held in Adelaide in February. All the teams showed a strong performance and continued to up-hold the proud tradition of State Hockey in Western Australia.

HOCKEY WA ANNUAL REPORT Page 13

Indoor Committee

The Australian U/18 Indoor Hockey Championships took place in January in Mandurah. The City of Mandurah provided an excellent venue allowing the competition to be of a high standard. The organization was outstanding and the tournament was completed with no major hiccups.

The Western Australia U/18 Men started the tournament with confidence and went through the round games undefeated. Upon beating South Australia in the semi final, the Western Australian boys were set to face NSW in the final. The final itself was a top quality match giving the crowd an exciting and skillful game to watch. Western Australia started slowly, allowing NSW to gain an early lead, which resulted in a 4-1 lead at half time. The second half was a completely different match. A motivated Western Australian team came out with a point to prove, and even though NSW scored first in the second half (5-1), the Western Australian boys held their composure and played their game, eventually tying up the game 6 all in the last 2 minutes of the match. This put the final into extra time with the Golden Goal rule in place. Within 3 minutes of the first extra time period, Western Australia scored off a short corner, giving them the tournament, Western Australia’s first at this level. Congratulations to all the boys and thanks to the organizers of the tournament.

The U/18 Women also had an excellent tournament, finishing 3rd.

In the Nationals held in Adelaide, all the Western Australian sides reached the final four. The Senior Men and U/21 Women won their semi-finals but were unable to find the net in the final, both receiving Silver medals. The Senior Women and U/21 Men played in hard fought semi-finals yet didn’t manage to create enough chances to move through to the final, finishing 4th and 5th respectively.

Overall, the Western Australian teams showed considerable amounts of heart and skill on the court and worked hard to uphold the highly valued reputation of Western Australia. We look forward to fielding another 6 teams in the National Championships to be held in November (U/21 and Senior) and January (U/18). Congratulations to all that were involved to make the last year a success.

Hockey WA continues to have greater involvement with indoor hockey. This benefits the local indoor competitions, National Championships but also hockey in Western Australia in general. The interest, hard work and support from the committee this year has been invaluable and will contribute to the further development of indoor hockey.

Junior Committee

JUNIOR COMMITTEE

In 2004, the Junior Committee moved into a role that predominantly supports and influences the policy directions of the development of Hockey WA. Through the Development Manager, Grant Mitton, the Committee has strategically reviewed policy and rules that will allow improved participation and retention in the future.

In this re-alignment, the Operational staff member aligned with the Junior Committee (Ralph Wood initially, and now Nadine Richards) are given more flexibility and responsibility in making the “day to day” decisions during the season.

Valuing the participation of parent volunteers in the sport is seen as the major focus for 2005. With strategies already planned to assist the promotion of this concept (eg brochure), it will hopefully see increased “take up” of the sport by younger players supported by their parents.

The issue of retention continues to be of concern, particularly with reduced numbers of girls’ teams and the further decline of boys’ numbers. It is important that this is addressed in 2005.

Among several successful initiatives by the Junior Committee were: x The Joint Registration Day on 21 February continued to be a successful initiative for clubs, with the focus continuing at the Under 11 group. In 2005, it is planned to target the parent group, through a “promotional” registration flyer. This will be distributed through the State’s primary schools. A special thank you is once again extended to Stan Hahnel for support in making it happen, and to the Gardner Trust for their financial contribution. x Fixtures: Following a successful meeting of both WAWHA and WAHA executives, all girls and boys a grade fixtures were turf based in 2004. Blocks of playing time for Under 13, 15 and 17 provided consistency, exposure and organizational benefits (eg umpiring). x Umpiring, although continuing to be of concern, realized two positive initiatives. These were the alignment of U/17A’s to the senior panel and the highly regarded ‘Jump Start’ program as proposed by Nadine Richards. x Challenge Cups: The concept of the “Challenge Cup” being a pennant for the top ranked mid season team has been successfully implemented. x Gradings: The “profiling” form and an insistence on clear and accurate information on players was widely endorsed by clubs, however a number of grading games were still required and there appeared to still be anomalies. A discussion paper was circulated to clubs that allowed for a 3 week “grading period” leading to the start of the season proper, and no finals. This will be trialed for Under 11 only. Reduced number of teams in A grade (8), introducing an A Reserve is also proposed for 2005. No mid season re-grading was trialed in 2004. Following a survey of clubs it is anticipated that this will be maintained for 2005, with a policy of “minimal disruption” to the existing grade where a “real” anomaly arises.

HOCKEY WA ANNUAL REPORT Page 15

Junior Committee

x Rules review for 2005: The massive effort into a re-drafting of the rules by members of the Committee is acknowledged. The extra time placed into the review by Kim Jones, Steph O’Sullivan and Tom Harmon will assist in operational policy guidelines in 2005. x Centralisation of Finals: In an effort to improve exposure to hockey, allow for event co-ordination and club support, the finals were centralized for 2004. In 2005, this will be put out to tender, with a rotational system likely for interested clubs. A Survey Paper on “No Finals” generated a keen response. It clearly indicated in favour of retaining finals, but questioned for Under 11’s. x Minkey Forum: A successful Minkey Forum was once again re-introduced. The feedback will allow a more consistent approach to the introduction of children to the sport. It looked at a wide variety of successful strategies within the metropolitan area. x Complaints: A very successful review of the season also highlighted the continued need for “self-regulation” in the sport. The new “complaints process” has been clearly articulated to Junior Co-ordinators and Codes of Behaviour for participants have been published in the Bulletin. However, there remains the on-going issue of playing players outside their “regular grades”. This has occurred in finals. A re-defining of the rules will assist in 2005, and the clear message to clubs is that “audits” will be undertaken of the cards where required. This process was implemented in late 2004.

The successful functioning of the Junior Committee is based on a tireless group of representative individuals that work on a voluntary capacity and the contributions of the following are acknowledged: x Gradings: Mike Young and Bob Jacobs x Finals: Stephen Brown x Registration: Stan Hahnel x Umpiring: David Hale x Bylaws & Rulings: Steph O’Sullivan and Tom Harman x Hockey WA Board Member: Kim Jones

The Committee recognizes the role played by these individuals and looks forward to continuing positive and constructive communication. The Committee held several Junior Co-ordinators’ meetings throughout the season and these were seen as an ideal forum for discussing issues, presenting proposals and gathering feedback. This open and accountable operation is just one reason why the Junior Committee continues to be valued as an integral part of junior hockey’s success.

Officiating Committee

OFFICIATING COMMITTEE

The 2004 season saw a major milestone in the establishment of the Officiating Committee. Previously, the Umpiring Committee focused on Umpiring with some focus on other officials however 2004 focused on all officials including Judges, Technical Delegates, Umpires, etc.

The Officiating Committee is a committee of Hockey WA and encompasses indoor and outdoor hockey including men, women and juniors. It is comprised of representatives from the Hockey WA Operations and Development Departments, Hockey WA Board and eight or more persons ratified by the Hockey WA Board

The Committee is responsible for 1) Developing, documenting and recommending policies and processes by which all Officials are appointed 2) Providing assistance to the Development Department to design strategies to: • Coordinate the coaching/mentoring, assessment and grading • Improve recruitment, retention and education • Implement the National Officiating Program (NOP) • Improve supporting resources • Develop pathways and opportunities 3) Making recommendations to Hockey Australia of Western Australian officials for Australian Championship panels 4) Providing assistance to the Operations Department when requested to recruit and retain volunteer help 5) Liaising with other Hockey WA Committees on overlapping issues

During the season various policies and strategies were developed including: x Coaching Policy x Recruitment Strategy x Appointments Policy x Junior Umpire Development Strategic Plan x Senior Umpiring Strategy x Charter of the Officiating Committee x Umpires Championship Nomination Package and Umpires Contract

The Committee was very active with considerable input into the 2005 Hockey WA budget. We have lobbied hard for one staff member to be responsible for Officiating in WA and focus the energy of the volunteers to ensure recruitment and retention of Officials becomes a priority.

Many will not be aware however in 2004 Western Australia supplied 17 Officials including Tournament Directors, Umpires Managers and Technical Officers for Australian Championships while 28 Umpires from Western Australia officiated at National Championships.

HOCKEY WA ANNUAL REPORT Page 17

Officiating & Senior Committee

Outstanding achievements by Melissa Trivic (International Umpire), Blake Burrows (NOAS Level 3), Dan Johnson (NOAS Level 3) and Nadine Richards (NOAS Level 3 Technical Official) were rewarded with various officiating upgrades while Melissa officiated at the FIH 4 Nation Tournament held in Spain during July 2004.

Murray Grime continued his spectacular success within the International Umpiring community by umpiring the FIH 4 Nations Tournament in China, FIH 3 Nations Tournament in England and finally the in Athens.

These umpires and officials are a credit to our sport and State and we wish them continued success.

Our sport could not survive without the many volunteers who officiate at all levels including Goundrey Cup and League, State Leagues, Metropolitan and Veterans grades. To all those unsung heroes, we sincerely thank you for your efforts over the season.

The Officiating Committee comprised Jenene Beazley, Murray Grime, Ian Pitt, Cameron Scadding, Ben Secrett, Nola Bezant (HWA Board), Melissa Trivic, Lorna Woodley, Grant Mitton (Development Manager), Ralph Wood (Staff) and Nadine Richards (Staff) who has capably taken over the role from Ralph. To each and every one of the Committee, my sincere thanks for the hard work and many ideas and input to the various policies and strategies we have developed over the season. In particular, Ian Pitt, Vern Gooch and Cameron Scadding who had the enormous responsibility of weekly umpire appointments while Ian also undertook to write the very informative Umpires’ Newsletter.

We had two very dedicated and excellent staff members attend every Officiating Committee meeting. The contribution from both Grant Mitton and Nadine Richards (and previously Ralph Wood) has been outstanding and we thank you for the tremendous effort during the year.

SENIOR COMMITTEE

In 2004, the Senior Committee increased its member numbers due to the Men’s and Women’s competitions being conducted by Hockey WA. This year’s committee commenced with Ian Tubbs (convenor), Martin Ferrari, Tony Wight, Clay Faulds, Tammy Lugg (Staff), Tony Leeflang (Board), Fiona Young, Melissa Hall, Roslyn Medbury, Shelley Dival and George Watts. However, due to work commitments for some of the committee members the committee ended the year with Clay Faulds, Ian Tubbs, and Fiona Young having to resign their positions whilst Peter Cook and Wendy Quint joined the committee.

Senior & Special Events Committee

This year we avoided the late start that we incurred last year which put us in a better planning position and enabled us to commence the change towards a proactive unit rather than a predominately reactive role that it has been known for in the past.

Hockey WA had a major task of re-design, not just for the committee’s own role but in facilitating both competitions being conducted by the one Association. Most of the work that we had this year was generated by the Board. The tasks we tackled included: x A review of playing rules and regulations; x Providing input into the design of new competition models; x Providing detail and ideas for a new Senior Committee Charter; x Turf allocation time for the M1A and M2A grades to match the women’s turf allocations (continued from last year and will be ongoing); x Drafting a generic fines schedules from previous WAHA and WAWHA guidelines; x Investigating grading procedures for senior grades for promotion and relegation in 2005; x Working on the retention of teams in hockey; x Designing minimum standards for hockey fields, both grass and turf; x Running a Presidents Forum; x Providing two committee members to the Hockey WA strategic planning weekend;

Whilst most of the above tasks will be either ongoing or reviewable, the hardest challenge we have is the recruitment of members to the Senior Committee. It has been recommended by the committee that new members are ‘targeted’ for their skill sets and experience in a more planned way such as listing prospective people and asking club presidents to put up some nominations. The committee also needs to expand its female representation.

I believe that with the redesign of the role of the Senior Committee along with Hockey WA now being in full swing there are many exciting development roles that this committee will be involved in, but sadly, as mentioned earlier in this report I will not be able to be involved due to my work commitments taking me overseas more often.

Many thanks go to the hard work and time that all the Senior Committee members provided this year. Again, with everyone working and with such a big job this year involving the new Hockey WA organisation there was a lot of ‘homework’ that we each took home on many occasions and as the Convenor of the committee I must say that this is greatly appreciated.

Ian Tubbs

SPECIAL EVENTS COMMITTEE

The Special Events Committee had a challenging season that started with the Women’s Australian Hockey League, played in Perth in March. With good crowds and a win by the SmokeFree WA Diamonds, the tournament was a great success. The committee

also assisted with Challenge Cup Day and Grand Final Day. The last and biggest event for 2004 was the first combined awards dinner, the Goundrey Wines Hockey WA Dinner on 15 September 2004. Nearly 400 people attended and the new format that recognizes achievements in both Men’s and Women’s division was an exciting development.

The committee has provided advice into other issues and is presently undertaking a review of all awards previously presented by the Men’s and Women’s Associations. The review will standardize the awards while retaining traditions associated with them and document criteria, awarding procedures and so forth, a vital resource for the future.

In 2004, the committee comprised Anne Fuhrmann, Shirley Leece, Angela Babb, Lawrence Apps, and staff, Linda Hamersley and Alex Johnston, whom I thank very much for their time and effort.

VETERANS COMMITTEE

The Veterans Committee of the association is managed by a group of dedicated people, who between them have had decades of experience in playing and club administration matters. The committee comprises Rob Fawkes (Board Liaison), Mal Skinner, Catherine McFarlane, Laurie Packham, Johnson Orr, Eleanor Staples, Brian Soares, Bill Campbell, Jennifer Houghton, Maris Margetts and myself as convenor, and our charter is to oversee all veterans’ competitions and to be responsible for State Veterans teams.

With the amalgamation of the men’s and women’s associations being a distinct possibility, representatives of the men’s and women’s veterans division of each association held a joint meeting in November 2003 to establish guidelines for a new committee. The current committee was elected at the annual veterans’ meeting in December 2003 as a result of hockey competitions in Western Australia coming under the administration of a single association. Since then, we have been working towards standardising the operations of the men’s and women’s competitions.

This season the men had 84 teams competing in their Saturday afternoon competition in grades ranging from Over 40’s to Over 60’s and a further 11 teams in the Midweek Over 40’s competition. The women had 18 teams competing in two grades in their Wednesday competition. In addition to this we also conduct a summer 7’s competition for both men and women.

The 2004 Men’s National Veterans Championships was held in Launceston, Tasmania from 27 September to 8 October. Western Australia competed in the O/40 Division 1, O/45, O/50, O/55, O/60 and O/65. The best results were the O/50 and O/65 who both finished second.

Perth hosted the 2004 National Women’s Veterans Championships at Perth Hockey Stadium from 8 to 16 October. Western Australia competed in all divisions – O/35, O/40, O/45, O/50 and O/55. Both the O/50 and O/55 played in the Grand Finals, unfortunately defeated in both games to finish runners-up. Following the championships, four Western Australians were selected in Australian veterans teams. Congratulations to Robyn Himbeck and Cheryl Watson (Open), Corinn Ditchburn (O/35) and Betty Butterly (O/45) on their selection. Overall, the championship was a great success and the organizing committee, officials and volunteers deserve recognition for their outstanding efforts to achieve this result. In particular, co-convenors of the organising committee Laurie Packham and Bev Sharpe did an outstanding job and deserve special mention.

The WAIS Men’s Hockey Program has again experienced success with players being selected at all national levels.

In the last twelve months, six WAIS athletes have achieved Senior National representation, five National Junior Squad selection, and three have represented Australia at Under 18 level. All Western Australian State Teams reached the finals of their respective National Championships.

Bevan George and Paul Gaudoin were selected in the Olympic Team. Unfortunately, Paul, who represented Australia in Atlanta and Sydney was forced to withdraw through injury.

Michael and Geoff Boyce made their international debuts during this period, playing alongside regular squad members Paul Gaudoin, Bevan George, Tristram Woodhouse and Aaron Hopkins. These athletes competed in tournaments including the Champions Trophy in Holland (2nd place), the Azhlan Shah Tournament in Kuala Lumpur (1st place), a home series against South Africa, Malaysia and India and an eleven game European Tour.

Whilst five WAIS athletes - Geoff Boyce, Michael Boyce, Bevan George, Aaron Hopkins and Paul Gaudoin were selected in the Olympic Squad following the Australian Hockey League, three other players, Steven Boyce, Richard Gibson and Leon Martin, were selected in the National Development Squad.

Ian Burcher, Fergus Kavanagh and Dean Pover (Captain), were included in the National Under 18 Team for a three test series against New Zealand in . Australia won the series 2 - 1.

Pover was accorded the honour, by the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC), of being one of two Ambassadors for the AOC at this year’s Olympic Youth Camp. The camp is an initiative of the International Olympic Committee and will run parallel with the Olympic Games. Young athletes from around the world will participate in IOC workshops and will be special guests at the Opening Ceremony and other Olympic events.

The focus of the Program now shifts to those athletes in contention for the Junior World Cup Qualifier in New Zealand in December and the Junior World Cup in Holland in June 2005. Following a period of regeneration, the senior athletes will resume with the intent of forcing their way into contention for the and World Cup in 2006.

have top 3 finishes in all representative sides in National Championships this year has promoted Western Australia to the number one spot in Women’s Hockey in Australia. This has been the result of several years of hard work by many people within the State at all levels.

Emily Halliday capped off a memorable year by being selected for the Hockeyroos and competing in her first Olympic Games in Athens. Emily continued to improve throughout 2004, being named player of the series in the 4 Test series against South Africa earlier in the year and then being named player of the tournament in the Australian Hockey League in Perth in March.

Eleven WAIS athletes were selected to play in the SmokeFree WA Diamonds this year and participate in the Australian Hockey League. The championships were played in Perth and took the form of a two week event to simulate as much as possible the format and playing conditions in Athens. The SmokeFree WA Diamonds have been improving steadily over the last few years, and it was felt that this year would be their chance to make the grand final. The team performed well throughout the tournament and showed real commitment and discipline to defeat firstly Queensland in the semi final and then favorites ACT in the final. Kia Mansell played a vital role in the final, scoring two goals in the team’s 2 – 1 win.

The WAIS players in the SmokeFree WA Diamonds were Emily Halliday, Brooke Morrison, Kim Walker, Kate Hubble, Kia Mansell, Jayde Taylor, Rheannin Kelly, Shelly Liddelow, Amy Shaw, Shayni Buswell and Sian Smithson.

A National Development Squad was named following the tournament, and three Western Australian players were selected - Shayni Buswell, Sian Smithson as well as returning WAIS scholarship holder Stacey Dwyer. Sian and Shayni have since been included in an AIS Team which competed as a fourth team against Australia, Japan and New Zealand in Darwin and Townsville in June. Stacey was unavailable due to injury.

Kia Mansell and Jayde Taylor were added to the Development Squad following excellent performances for the National Under 21 Squad in a test series against China in August.

Six WAIS athletes - Kate Hubble, Jayde Taylor, Kia Mansell, Rheannin Kelly, Shelly Liddelow, and Amy Shaw - traveled with the State Under 21 Team to Sydney to participate in the National Championships in July. The Championships formed a major part of the selection process for the Junior World Cup Squad. The team finished second with Hubble, Mansell, Liddelow and Taylor being selected for the Junior World Cup Squad.

All of the younger WAIS athletes were selected for the Under 18s that competed in the Nationals in Darwin in April. The team finished third, with a notable win against Queensland in their last game, the play for third and fourth. The WAIS players were Fiona Boyce, Jemma Buckley, Chantelle Ciallella and Ashleigh Nelson. Chantelle and Ashleigh finished in the top 3 goal scorers for the tournament and both were selected for the Junior National Camp in January 2005. Ashleigh was chosen to captain a Western

MEN’S AUSTRALIAN HOCKEY LEAGUE - SmokeFree WA Thundersticks

The SmokeFree WA Thundersticks travelled to Melbourne this year with two aims - one being to push as many players towards Olympic selection and the other to be National Champions again.

In what was a long preseason for all the athletes the opportunity to finally compete was what all the players had been looking for. The championship reverted back to the old National Championship format of playing nine games in twelve days in one location. This was purely for Olympic preparation and the best way to see our top athletes perform under the rigours of a long, tough tournament.

The round games went as expected with some tight games against the top teams and also the so called bottom teams. While not playing to our best early on, as the tournament unfolded, our form became better and better.

With the round games finished, the SmokeFree WA Thundersticks finished second after only losing one game outright and one in overtime.

The semi final was a tight contest against NSW with an overtime golden goal by Michael Boyce early in the first period of extra time. This was a replay of our last round game in which we played NSW and lost after a goal early in the first period of extra time.

Once again we faced Brisbane in the final and while the 4-1 score line to Brisbane seems a one sided contest the game was far from that. Our first 20 minutes was all a coach could have asked for, in both attack and defence. We created numerous chances, only to be denied on the line by some very good goal keeping and last line defence.

It was only after this period of time that Brisbane broke us down and slowly got on top and eventually ran out winners by 4 goals to 1.

After the final, five players were selected in the Olympic squad. These players were Paul Gaudoin, Bevan George, Aaron Hopkins, Michael Boyce and Geoff Boyce. Three other

players were selected in the National Development Squad. They were Richard Gibson, Leon Martin and Steven Boyce. SmokeFree WA Thundersticks Captain Paul Gaudoin was the Fairest and Best player in 2004 and presented with this award at the 2004 Goundrey Wines Hockey WA Dinner.

With the introduction of Brent Dancer and Jonathan Charlesworth as two new young players the exposure and development for the future is still in front of the SmokeFree WA Thundersticks. These players will benefit from the experience and stands the SmokeFree WA Thundersticks in good stead for the coming years

While the result was not what we were looking for the team performed very well. To reach its fourth Grand Final in four years and to have 8 players named in the top 32 players in this country is an excellent achievement. It shows the strength and depth we have at the moment and bodes well for the next four years.

WOMEN’S AUSTRALIAN HOCKEY LEAGUE – SmokeFree WA Diamonds

The SmokeFree WA Diamonds won the Australian Hockey League in 2004. This was Western Australia’s first Senior Women’s National Championship since 1994.

The 2004 Team:

Emily Halliday (Co-Captain) Kim Walker (Co-Captain) Hayley Patton Jemma Norton Shayni Buswell Shelly Liddelow Sian Smithson Rheannin Kelly Stacey Dwyer Melissa Hall Kate Hubble Nicole Rollason Jayde Taylor Amy Shaw Kia Mansell Amanda Calton Brooke Morrison Renee Higman

The pre-tournament program was an eight week training and playing schedule that commenced in early 2004 and included a camp at Club Capricorn, Yanchep and a number of practice matches, including three against the Korean Olympic squad, a Presidents X1 and the Hotspurs.

Winning the 2004 AHL could have been considered as ‘against the odds’ given three teams - Queensland Scorchers, NSWIS Arrows and Canberra Strikers - between them contributed 19 of the 24 player Olympic Squad. The SmokeFree WA Diamonds finished the round robin phase of the tournament with equal top points (third with goal difference) with Canberra and Queensland having won 5 games and losing one outright and one in extra time.

HOCKEY WA ANNUAL REPORT Page 27

Women’s Australian Hockey League

The SmokeFree WA Diamonds played great, tough hockey to win the semi final against the Queensland Scorchers. Tied 2-2 at full time and after extra time, the SmokeFree WA Diamonds won via sudden death penalty stokes after being seemingly out of contention.

The SmokeFree WA Diamonds win in the final was one of sheer brilliance, outplaying the highly fancied Canberra Strikers for much of the game and running out winners 2-1. After leading 1-0 at half time and 2-0 for most of the second half, the SmokeFree WA Diamonds hung on for a gallant win. Kia Mansell scored both goals.

The SmokeFree WA Diamonds were well lead by the Co-Captains Emily Halliday and Kim Walker and the whole team represented Hockey WA with distinction and pride on and off the field. The SmokeFree WA Diamonds had individual AHL rewards in Emily Halliday being selected in the Olympic Team, being awarded the Player of the Tournament and the Player of the Final. Additionally Shayni Buswell, Sian Smithson and Stacey Dwyer were selected in the National Development Squad.

More than 5,000 spectators supported the SmokeFree WA Diamonds during the tournament and through their victory it is hoped the team has delivered a very positive atmosphere throughout the hockey fraternity.

The SmokeFree WA Diamonds officials including the Manager (Jocelyn Henly), Assistant Coaches ( & Craig Boyce) and Physiotherapist (Fiona Chromiak) again represented Hockey WA in a professional and positive way in all activities associated with the team.

The team was represented by a 5 player Team Management Group which provided an important interface with the team officials and coaches. This method of team management provided a positive approach to implementing the desired changes to the philosophies and culture of the team and its performance.

The support for the SmokeFree WA Diamonds and the professional running of the Championships was a credit to Hockey WA. All members of the Hockey WA administration and Board had a role in the success of the Championships and the SmokeFree WA Diamonds team. The positive vibes that were evident from all the Hockey WA staff was greatly appreciated by the players and team management.

The team contributed to the funding of the AHL program by conducting two successful coaching clinics for junior players. This provided funding and built a positive profile for the players and the team amongst the young participants and their parents.

With a large number of the 2004 team in the squad for 2005, the SmokeFree WA Diamonds are well positioned to defend its title when it competes in the 2005 Australian Hockey League.
