Kedron Wavell Services Hockey Club Annual Report 2016 Page 2 Club Partners The role of the partnership manager and team is to grow and maintain the relationships we have with the community partners and those internal ones such as our members, coaches, volunteers and parents. Approximately 18 months ago Kedron Wavell Hockey committed to ensuring we improve our marketing of the club and increase our communication to our members and community partners. It has been an exciting but challenging journey as we look to turn Kedron Wavell Hockey into a more modern sporting club. In 2016 we initiated a number of fundamental reforms to improve the Kedron Wavell Services Hockey Club. These included: 1. Increasing on our online presence through the introduction of an integrated social media platform such as: ◦ New Website ◦ Updated Facebook page ◦ Introduction of Instagram ◦ New regular newsletter format This resulted in a considerable increased online presence, audience engagement and reach across all platforms.

2. Structured external and internal partnership agreements that involved a full understanding of both parties needs Agreements for our high level coaches 3. Introduction of a Social Media Manager role 4. Review of branding ownership and protection

Throughout the 2016 season the Club continued its connectivity with our community, with a number of new partnerships and critical renewals.  Renewal of our principal partner arrangement with Kedron Wavell Services Club.  TPS Health – Introduction of physiotherapy, strapping & assessment for our top tier women’s team during games. Bulk billing of therapy for our top tier men & women’s team. Mid week assessment for all club members and highly discounted services to all members  Osaka Hockey – Partnership agreement that see’s a donation of equipment and wholesale pricing on hockey equipment for our new store  Stronach Building – 3 year term arrangement that saw and upgrade of our masters uniform and player equipment  Chermside Family Dental – Partnership to increase the safety of all Kedron Wavell Hockey players through discounted mouth guards. Over the last year Kedron Wavell Services Hockey Club also introduced the following internal initiatives.  Access to one on one personal skills training sessions with premium coaches  Introduction of an additional revenue stream with the opening of the Kedron Wavell Osaka Hockey online shop Looking Forward 2017/2018 Next season see’s the continuation of the Club’s strategy for fundamental reforms with the introduction of a mobile communication software that give us one of the leading communications and member engagement platforms in the QLD sporting community. It will also be coupled with a trial of an online fee payment program. We hope these two additions will bring a great response from our members.

Kedron Wavell Services Hockey Club Annual Report 2016 Page 3 Lastly and the most exciting news for Kedron Wavell and Hockey in general is the announcement late this year of the intention to build a second artificial turf at Burringbar, Home of the Kedron Wavell Wolves. With funding from Brisbane City Council, Federal Government and private business, we will become the premium hockey facility in Brisbane allowing for increased games, training and due to its close proximity to hotels and our principal partner Kedron Wavell Services Hockey Club a venue capable of holding local and national tournaments. I’d like to finish by thanking our committee, volunteers, members and parents for what was an exciting year for Kedron Wavell Hockey and I look forward to catching up with everyone for the 2017 season

Kedron Wavell Services Hockey Club Annual Report 2016 Page 8 President’s Report On-Field Success In 2016 we again had some well-spread success, with premierships and minor premierships to be celebrated (vociferously) on both Junior and Senior Presentation Nights; following on from 2014 and 2015 with premierships won in every section. Once again, it was also great to see KW players turning out for national teams, including the Hockeyroos, and the Men’ s Australian Masters; as well as several Wolves in the AHL. Club Management The Club’s Management Committee and Club Captains did another great job this year, and I was really pleased to attend another great end-of-season Junior’s function, this year at a new venue – unfortunately hampered a bit by the rain (but not quite as badly as the rain then affected the Women’s Div. 1 grand final the following week!); and then followed with the Senior Presentation night at the Services Club where we pulled a record number for many a year – and almost filled the Kittyhawk Room. Each event once again highlighted for me the way in which our supporters, volunteers and parents are the platform of future success. It was great to see all of the joy at the recognition given to our Club’s on-field and off-field supporters – particularly to Marty Couch as the winner of the Patron’s Trophy in 2016, presented at the Junior Presentation Night with an encore at the Senior Night. The Club also gave a very loud vote of acknowledgement on Senior Presentation night when very long- standing member Ian Jones was inducted as our newest Life Member – joining his mother Mavis Jones who was our very first Life Member. Off-field champions Once again I am overwhelmed by the efforts of those who make our Club happen off the field, organising sections, canteen, teams, partnerships and all the other myriad activities that make it possible for the players to run out every week. As I have done in previous years, I again want to note here my very sincere thanks, on behalf of the Club, to every single one of you and to all of you. You are all both the foundation of the club and the framework on which we build the outwardly-noticed success and player enjoyment. If you’re reading this and not already involved – come and join in …. volunteering is a genuinely rewarding life experience! Burringbar Park Kedron Wavell continued to work with BHA and BWHA to ensure a quality facility for our sport is maintained at Burringbar Park and to ensure it remains the ‘Home of Kedron Wavell Hockey’. This year we had a massive success when our local Brisbane City Councillor, Cr. Fiona King ( a continuing champion of our Club!) secured a $1 million dollar commitment towards the second turf – turning a dream into a reality. Come 2018 season, we’ll be running on two turfs at our home ground! Our Principal Club Sponsors In 2016 the Kedron Wavell Services Club stepped up another notch with their contributions to supporting the hockey club, and I want to again acknowledge the enormous support that has again been provided to us. Please continue to support the Services Club as you can – in just a little reflection of how very good they are to all of us! The Services Club was joined this year by other major contributions by physiotherapists TPS Health, home builder Stronach Building and online services company Jumbo Interactive. Look them up on our Club website – they are worth our support when you need the services they provide.

Kedron Wavell Services Hockey Club Annual Report 2016 Page 9 At the end of the season we secured another major partner in Osaka Hockey – and your Club is now South East ’s first full retail distributor for this top hockey brand. Go to the Club website for our online shop – and look out for more coming in the Club house.

See you at the field in 2017!

Kedron Wavell Services Hockey Club Annual Report 2016 Page 11 Men’s Report 2016 was a watershed year on the field for the male Wolves. Our regular high performers, our master’s players, continue to be incredibly successful, however this season our divisional teams showed remarkable improvement and very encouraging signs for the future. For the first time since 1999 the Wolves Division One men managed 5 wins in a season and finished in 7 th place. Apart from a couple of aberrations mid-year, the group consistently stuck it to the high fliers of the competition and with a little luck we could easily have ended the year higher on the table, perhaps even an outside chance of finals play.

Hockey in Brisbane has reached a tipping point. Ten years ago we participated in an amateur sport where everyone paid their way, games were hard but it was still just an amateur game with a couple of elite guys rising past the rest of the mortals. Today we are faced with a dilemma; FIVE clubs in Brisbane now have enough highlevel representative players on their books that they are forced to select “the elite” in second grade each week. TWO of those five clubs finished below us on the first grade table this season. How do they attract those players: Success and Money. Success breeds success, players from “up North” lob in with big reputations and want to play with mates from rep teams, For those that don’t chase success they look for the best deal they can get.

We have choices to make right now. Are we a nice family club who wants to have as many players participating and enjoying a great sport, or do we wish to compete with the competition leaders and win more games than we lose in most grades? Is it possible to do both? Do the strategies that enable clubs to win matches alienate the heart and soul of the club that have supported the club for years and will still be there when the transient players leave? My belief is that if we decide that we wish to compete at the top level the answer is, regrettably MONEY. Money to fund additional resources on and off the field. Even if we chose to tread water and decide we are happy with the way things are, the progress of other clubs will see us fall backwards without a capital injection. Norths, the perennial whipping boys of the first grade competition, recruited well in 2016 and have the capacity to be a force in future years if they can retain those players.

The Men’s executive and leading players have considered this issue and the resounding answer is YES, we want to play finals. How do we get there?? The answers….  Win 6 more matches minimum  Train more often  Train harder  Include more fitness training  Recruit new talent  Retain existing players.

But back to the present, the Wolves 2016 results were sensational across the board. There were a number of reasons for this turnaround in fortunes, the return to the club of highly credentialed “old-boys”, the addition of a couple of talented overseas and local players and a new found commitment to fitness training were all factors. If the Wolves are able to continue this improvement into the future it won’t be long before we are able to claim some high profile scalps and perhaps dream of silverware. Respect was earned in 2016, Fear will come in 2017!

The improved performance in the first grade team rubbed off on other divisions with the best performances in more than ten years being recorded by every team. Seconds finished 8th and in a tight competition were pressing for a finals berth until late in the season. Thirds finished a very creditable 7 th, thanks to an amazing two-goal burst in the final two minutes of their final match of the year. Our amazing sixth grade team continues to belt out great seasons, which culminate in a grand final appearance. But I wanted to save special praise for our fifth grade side, a new team this season made up of juniors, new guys, some old heads and coached by legend, James Treeby, started slowly, but James built a great team by the end of the season, culminating in a great 5-1 win in their last game. Congratulations to all the divisional players on a great year.

Kedron Wavell Services Hockey Club Annual Report 2016 Page 12 The beating heart and soul of our club, our men’s masters’ players once again had a strong year. A number of new players and team changes made results a little harder to come by this year however firsts and seconds played well without necessarily achieving the remarkable results of previous years. Our thirds were minor premiers and dominated their grand final to take out another premiership. I want to just reflect for a moment on this amazing group of men. There are a number of guys here who have more than 30 seasons for the club, who love contributing and just enjoy hockey.

At the start of the year we put a call out to the men’s club for financial support. The objective was simple, to keep playing fees as low as possible for players across the board and to have funds to support a number of players we were at risk of being lost to the sport for monetary reasons. Two very special members of the club rallied to the call. David Todd, from Jumbo Interactive spoke to his company and a very generous cheque was handed over! Barry Stronach, from Stronach Building put his hand in his own pocket to provide a complete refresh of playing equipment for the men’s masters’ teams. These two supporters, Jumbo Interactive and Stronach Building have done a massive amount to ensure that we were able to put teams on the field and put in proud performances week in, week out. I’d also like to pay tribute to the other sponsors and supporters, Kedron Wavell Services Club, Osaka and TPS Physiotherapy. We hope to see you at more men’s matches in future!!

I’d like to thank the volunteers who have helped keep the Wolves successful on the field this year. Firstly our Committee, Brian (secretary), and Michelle (treasurer) have both worked tirelessly to ensure the smooth running of our teams. A special mention to Michelle who has made an amazing effort to turn around the finances of the men’s section of the club. She has also made an enormous contribution to Men’s hockey through her election as a board member of BHA, along with Karen Argent. Next, An amazing group of Coaches , Managers and Coordinators (Matt, Steve, Rad, Kerry, Paul, Josh, James, Marty, Jessie, Scott, Brett, Barry, Duncan, Ian and Ian) Thank you and I hope you all will consider throwing your hat in the ring again to assist in 2017. And finally the playing group as a whole who were happy to put their hand up and help whenever it was required. A special mention here to the many players who put their hand up to help out with umpiring as required, I’m sure there were many of you when I wasn’t in attendance but a couple I saw who regularly helped included, James, Toby, Matt, Trent and Craig, Great work guys!

Roll on 2017!!

Kedron Wavell Services Hockey Club Annual Report 2016 Page 13 Ladies’ Report 2016 was another strong year for the ladies section.

Our Division 1 ladies took out the minor premiership - this is no mean feat in this competition and the ladies and Nikki are to be congratulated. This team also made the grand final but a shocking weather system on that day worked against us and multiple delays in the game made for very difficult conditions. Despite starting strongly we weren’t able to bring home the trophy. The strength of the ladies in the conditions was admirable and the game went to shoot outs but we just couldn’t do it. However, we are knocking on the door and that Division 1 premiership trophy will have our name on it.

In the grass competition our DP2 ladies came from third position on the ladder to make the grand final. They pulled off a fantastic win and brought home the premiership trophy. Fran Duke was named the Player of the Final after an excellent game – congratulations to the ladies.

A special thanks to all our ladies who contributed this year, whether it was doing canteen duty, umpiring or just supporting our teams. We noticed a big surge in member support this year and we hope to improve on that next year with more club days. I would also like to recognise the work of Club Captains Jacob Jennison and Jasmine Larosa who recognised that club spirit is essential and organised a number of events that encouraged members from different teams and sections to mix. These social occasions were enjoyed and I look forward to more in coming years.

Kedron Wavell Services Hockey Club Annual Report 2016 Page 14 Junior Boys Report This season saw the boys field 6 teams. The U11 boys made it through to the finals which was an exceptional effort for first time U11 coach Allison. This year again saw a number of players achieve representative honours for the first time, as well as Lewis Fossey being select to represent Australia. Like always I was proud to witness the improvement in individual skills and teamwork across all age groups. Fundraising On the fundraising front, the junior boys where selected to hold a Bunnings BBQ, however due to a lack of numbers we were unable to fulfil our spot which was a shame.

Development This year with the efforts of Ian Smith, the boys commenced becoming accredited to be umpires.

Again the boys tried to run a level one coaching clinic in conjunction with the girls, however due to a challenging time table this was cancelled at the last minute. Hopefully next year we will get it up and running.

Acknowledgements In closing, as this is my last year as Boys VP I would like to acknowledge the efforts of all the coaches and managers for your effort this year.

I would also like to thank Tash (Girls VP) and a big thank you to Tania for all her effort. Without her this would have been a very long season.

With that, I wish the new committee all the best.

Brendan Anderson Junior Boys Vice President

Kedron Wavell Services Hockey Club Annual Report 2016 Page 15 Junior Girls Report 2016 saw another successful year with again twelve teams in the BWHA competition from U7 through to JT1 grade. Though player memberships was slightly down from last year, we saw an increase of players move over to us to be part of a turf team, and the grass numbers were again strong with us fielding 3 x U11 teams for the 3rd successive season. Hook in2 Hockey participants were again good this year, resulting in keeping the Rookey teams at 4.

On the field our club enjoyed success with the U11C girls being Minor Premiers, and our U11A team finishing the season strongly taking the premiership from Commercial. This gives young coach Taylor Quirk back to back grand finals for her respective coaching years.

The remainder of our teams enjoyed mixed results within their individual competitions with all teams competing strongly throughout and until the end of the season. A special mention to our 13T team – in previous seasons we have been at the back end of the group, however some strong new players and the right vision from the coach saw us finish in 4th – an excellent achievement.

Under 11A Premiers Coaches: I would like to personally acknowledge and thank our coaches for their individual commitment and efforts in developing our junior girls players. Coaches are priceless!  Junior turf - Peter Gaddes, Tony Aleksic, Holly Marsh and Andrew Blanchard. Congratulations to you all for taking the time the time to coach each of these teams whilst maintaining player enthusiasm and instilling some great skills. With the help of our senior players and coaches, our turf teams had a strong season given this year we were back to the young teams.  Junior Grass - thank you to Ellie Mason, Tracey Sullivan, Taylor Quirk, Cindy Johnson, Kim Abbott and Laura Rivers for coaching our junior grass teams this season. The girls enjoyed their season and each of you was able to lay some very positive foundations ensuring the success of our club in the coming years.  Under 9s and Under 7s – thank you to Catherine Burchill, Nicole Murphy, Mikayla Cavanagh, Katrina Symmans, Tanya Hoyle and Holly Marsh for your commitment and passion coaching our future up and coming champions.

Kedron Wavell Services Hockey Club Annual Report 2016 Page 16 Managers: We have been fortunate again this year that individual parents within each team put their hand up to manager a team. They are invaluable in assisting coaches, coordinating canteen rosters, game times, photos, fundraising etc. Your efforts are sincerely appreciated. Fundraising: To the parents, thank you for your commitment to our club. We had another successful season with canteen duty – with nearly everyone doing their roster, this is a vital boost to our section finances. To supplement our fundraising efforts, we again undertook the cookie dough fund raising drive, raising needed funds for the club. Thank you Lisa Newbold for your co-ordination of this drive. To Joanne Galvin – thank you again for your efforts in managing the Downey Park Cake Stall – our Cake Stall and Raffle for 2016 was again very successful. Your team of merry people make our stall look magnificent, and the goodies are to die for. Umpiring: A big thanks again this year to Revel Lockton – umpire coordinator for the 3rd consecutive year. Again instrumental in ensuring our commitment to BWHA is filled – submitting weekly umpire rosters. Kedron Wavell have become known for their fantastic development program and follow up mentoring, and this year saw 10 juniors continue their umpire development. We had huge success with many receiving their Community Badge and one moving up to Community Advanced. We also initiated a innovative trial of radio mic coaching techniques for junior umpires which is now being adopted by BWHA. Umpire development has been successful this year with a number of young umpires achieving success and being allocated grand finals. Throughout the season we had girls representing at both Southern Cross and State Championships, and all were successful, and we finished the season strongly with 2 girls representing at BWHA Grand Finals. A wonderful achievement that can’t be said by many clubs! Our girls however don’t do this alone, we have a strong mentoring program led by Ian Smith and Alyson Aleksic, and I thank you both for the work you have done in giving our young umpires strong advice, tools and the confidence to continue enjoying umpiring. I am very proud of the umpiring position KW junior girls have in Brisbane. But it’s not only our juniors players that make up the Junior Umpiring Squad. We have seniors that are invaluable to our umpire roster each week. Thank you!! Representative Players: This year many of our girls trialled for representative selection in the different age groups. Congratulations to all who were successful and I encourage all players to continue to seek representative honours in the future. A list of all rep players and honours is further below. Finally thank you to Lisa Newbold, our junior girls secretary. In my first year as VP, her assistance was priceless. There are many other parents and supporters that have contributed in some way throughout the season, to you all a big thank you from the Junior Committee. It takes many volunteer hands to make a club run. In closing I would like to acknowledge all of the older girls who, by age, have played their last game of junior girl’s hockey, proudly for Kedron Wavell Services Hockey Club. Thanks for your commitment to the development of our junior girls section and keep playing and enjoying your hockey. Natasha Gaddes Junior Girls Vice-President
