4 BWHA 2005 Annual Report Senior Section PRESIDENT’S REPORT Another season comes to an end and we always look back to see what we have accomplished; no I didn’t get that committee up and running looking at the feasibility of a new turf; no we weren’t able to infiltrate the Courier Mail; no we couldn’t get the new website up, but anyone that knows me I never look at the negative side all I can think of is what the members of management were able to achieve and what the association has done.

Systems Due to the persistence of Libby Roberts and Kathy Duggan we will have a database up and running next year which will not only make BWHA’s life easier it will make the volunteers within the club life easier.

We are starting to utilise our financial system through the introduction of EFT etc., which in the long run will save us time, next it will be the assets.

The Clubhouse Finally we are holding our dinners in our own clubhouse, yes there are teething problems but at least money spent is going back into hockey – it will only get better.

You will note that Mary and her merry women have been busily putting up all our trophies, frames etc – this does make the clubhouse look like a clubhouse and makes it easier to lease out. This year we have had the Qantas Christmas party, a wedding, a 21 st , a 50 th , a Fly Fishing Club, Reiki, and many meetings for Netball and other sporting organisations including our own.

As you can see the House and Grounds committee under Bronwyn Morris are working hard to ensure that BWHA have another avenue of revenue so that we are not continually raising fees, as a matter of fact we haven’t had an increase since 2003.

Fixtures We might not have done the things I mentioned in the first paragraph but we did get the Associations games on grounds and this is not an easy thing to do. With 147 junior teams, 83 senior teams, 13 masters, of these 52 teams need to train on turf, and mind you we only have 2 nights and this is taken up with 6 vets fixtures; then they all have to play either on Saturday and Sunday – aren’t you glad it’s not you who is doing the fixtures and we leave it up to Jenny and her trustworthy committee.

Local Paper Meg was able to put together a group of home grown “journos” with the likes of Lauren Richards and Lee Oliver, who persistently put stories forward and I think by the end of the season we were getting good space in the local papers and both dinners were covered as well as local tournaments.

U15 Championships BWHA was listed to host the State U15 Girls Championship this year. These types of tournaments always take a lot of preparation and need the time and enthusiasm of our volunteers to make it a success. Brian Kingsford put his hand up to convene an Organising Committee and they worked tirelessly in the lead up, during and at the conclusion of the tournament. Brian’s Report will detail all the work carried out, but I would like to say a special thank you to Brian and his willing workers, who despite the terrible conditions (the only rain for the year, fell that week) did a marvellous job. It could not have happened without you. This tournament also highlighted the urgent need for BWHA to have its own turf. While HQ has allowed us the use of the SHC turf fee free, the organisation at a venue where we have no control of the canteen, office equipment and facilities is extremely difficult. Congratulations Brian for a job well done.

Southbank Institute BWHA in partnership with HQ, BHA and the Southbank Institute of TAFE funded a new program for athletes in the Brisbane metropolitan area aged 17 to 20 years to assist those players previously talent identified to continue progressing through the ranks to state U21, QAS and AHL level. This has been an obvious void in the development of our metropolitan players for many years. While a few hiccups were had during this initial year – hopefully by the end of 2006 we will see significant benefit for our metropolitan players inline with the Regional QAS program that has assisted players from other centres for many years.

5 BWHA 2005 Annual Report Senior Section So now when I look back, I think my goodness how did we do all this in one season and I believe it could only be through the dedication of management (Kathy, Lyn, Mary, Liz, Sonya, Meg, Bronwyn, Jodie, Desley and Jenny) and those volunteers out there like Joyce, Rhonda, Caroline, Angela, Libby, Jenny Tidey, Cheryl, Bev, June and all the others whose names appear at the front of this report, that our association can achieve so much in one year.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all members of management past and present for your support over my term, I have thoroughly enjoyed it and I will see you around the traps!

Lisa-Maree Jones President

SECRETARY’S REPORT

At the conclusion of the 2004 season, clubs were asked to submit nominations for all positions in BWHA. While we had numerous nominations, it is indeed sad that with over 2500 members, we did not fill all positions and committees at the Annual General Meeting.

The AGM was held on 30 th November, 2005. The Junior Volunteer of the Year (Kathy Duggan – Junior Umpires Development) and Senior Volunteer of the Year (Mary Cockings – SHC Canteen and Bar Organiser) were announced. A Special Council Meeting was also held on this night and approved a change of Management Portfolio from Umpires to Communications. The meeting was well attended and everyone enjoyed the supper supplied and the opportunity to socialise at the end of the season.

A Christmas break-up was held for the Management Committees and staff at the BWHA Clubhouse on possibly the hottest day in December. The event was self- catered and apart from the heat, all seemed to enjoy the event. This is the small token of thanks to these people for the countless hours they spend working for our association.

The office closed for 3 weeks during December/January, with Mary Cockings checking the mail and attending any messages during that time. Thank you to Mary for this work. With the re-opening of the office came the busy preparation for the 2005 season. With Management having set the plan during October and November of the previous year, the office began producing the Administration Folders and information required by all clubs.

With the SHC entity winding up, much time was spent in organising the new hire Agreement with Hockey Queensland, this was finalised by the end of the season. To wind up the SHC it was necessary to finalise their books and as both BHA and BWHA had been guarantors of this facility, it meant we paid $17,500.00 each, which released us from our guarantees ($67,500.00) and meant the money held in term deposit for this purpose could be used for BWHA on other projects. Thank you to Liz O’Connor and Lisa-Maree Jones for all their work in this area.

During the planning meetings it was identified that the one small office was no longer sufficient to allow the staff and volunteers to work in a productive manner. Two new offices were built and ready for operation by the start of the playing season. Thank you to Michael Reynolds (Builder) and John Bowkett (Electrical) for all their assistance with this. While these men were paid contractors, their involvement with hockey ensured they went beyond the call of duty to have the job finished on time and in a most professional and cost effective manner.

We also organised construction of additional “Trophy Cabinets” for the clubhouse to display the many trophies held by BWHA. Thank you to Max Travers for his expertise in creating these beautiful cabinets. Due to the wear and tear of many of our perpetual trophies it was decided that they would be kept on site and winners issued with a replica. We hope when all trophies are engraved at the end of this season and the balance of shields hung in the clubhouse, that it will truly reflect the history and achievements of our members, and showcase it to all that use the facility.

6 BWHA 2005 Annual Report Senior Section

Anne Yeo donated the cost of framing a signed “70 th Birthday” shirt and photographs to hang in the clubhouse and BWHA had framed a BWHA shirt signed by the Hockeyroos and a signed Hockeyroos body suit, which now hang proudly in the entrance to the BWHA Clubhouse. An afternoon tea was held on the second fixture day at Downey Park for our Life Members and past members to unveil the memorabilia and thank them again for their past and continuing support of BWHA. We hope to have pictures and other memorabilia framed and displayed in the clubhouse in the near future. Our Archives Committee and the greater hockey family lost a very dear person in 2005. Mary (Pixie) Josiffe was a revered hockey personality from Club to International level. It is impossible to list all of her achievements and positions she held. Mrs Josiffe was my instance reference on all people, many times when I needed information on a past member or event, I would ring Mrs Josiffe and off the top of her head she would supply facts and dates. She was a very gracious lady, highly intelligent and committed in all things she undertook… She will be greatly missed by myself personally and all who knew her at BWHA and hockey throughout Australia.

Each year we seem to say the same things, “the season is busier”, “the season goes quicker”, but this is the age we live in. Our Management members each year step up to the mark to ensure we keep abreast of the new challenges and opportunities.

The vital Fixture and Grading area of our sport lead by Jenny Heron, work non-stop to ensure teams can compete at the correct level and provide opportunities equal for all. Thank you Jenny and your team for this important work. The pressure to get more teams on turf, we hope will be relieved a little in 2006 with the announcement that Redcliffe Leagues Hockey Club will have a new turf surface for the start of the 2006 season. BWHA joins with Redcliffe Leagues Hockey Club in thanking the Redcliffe City Council and the State Government for funding this important new turf surface.

With Fixtures comes the need for support personnel, Umpires, Sports Trainers and Technical Officers. Sonya Fisher with great support from Lyn, Mary, Cheryl and Meg ensured this essential area of our sport was met. This is a time consuming job, Sonya’s report will detail this work, but I thank her and her workers for their diligence. Funding has been gained from Queensland Sport and Recreation to assist with Umpire and Coach Development for 2005-2006 and this will be put to good use to increase our numbers of qualified volunteers.

At the end of 2004 Hockey Queensland under directions from Hockey Australia introduced a new national database. This database is designed to reduce the work in a number of areas, but significantly in the game statistic area. This has been the domain of our “Encyclopaedic” Lyn Thomas for many years. With the significant help of Libby Roberts a number of courses were attended and information sought from clubs to get the database up and running in BWHA. We still have a fair way to go, before we can utilise the many features it appears to have, but hope to have it operational by the start of the 2006 season. During this teething period, we will no doubt rely even more heavily on Lyn to ensure that the correct and essential information is available and kept. Lyn’s precise record keeping has been the backbone of our competitions for many years and I am confident with her knowledge, we can successfully negotiate the road to a more automated system for the future. The long-term goal of reducing the heavy workloads on our Junior and Senior “Match Secretaries” is necessary for volunteer retention in the future.

Our facilities and grounds are our greatest asset and at times our greatest challenge. Particularly in a year like 2005 that saw drought descend on the South East Region of Queensland. Bronwyn Morris worked tirelessly with her small but enthusiastic group to produce the best facilities possible. Her report will indicate the many and varied tasks required to keep us on track. The Brisbane City Council continues to support us with funding and assistance with the fields and we hope to have extensive work done on Rasey Park during the off-season, with their help.

As reported in last year’s Annual Report it was anticipated that the end of 2004 would see the winding up the QWASC. Unfortunately some things work slowly, but there appears to be a light at the end of the tunnel and it is expected that the new leases for Downey Park will be ready this side of Christmas 2005. We hope the joint lease with Softball will ensure we are both accountable for the maintenance and upkeep of this wonderful park. Thank you to Mary Cockings, Liz O’Connor and Maureen Hayes for all their work to date.

7 BWHA 2005 Annual Report Senior Section

We held the BWHA President’s Medal Dinner at the BWHA Clubhouse for the first time in 2005. From all accounts this was great success. The reduction in cost and the ability to encourage players and supporters to attend meant we had a full house of 230+. Jodie Dodd co-ordinated all events this year and ensured that they were well organised. The sponsors, who assist our organisation throughout the year, attended on this night and enjoyed themselves thoroughly. As with any volunteer organisation Sponsors are essential. Thank you to Schweppes, Streets, 4 ‘n Twenty, Nixenco, Just Hockey, AMP, John Bowkett Electrical and all other companies and individuals that supported BWHA in 2005.

The third annual BWHA Downey Park Dinner was again held this year and while numbers were down all had an enjoyable night. Thank you to Judy Keen who again MC’d this evening and gave it her particularly entertaining .

Meg Brodie took on the new portfolio of Communications and she endeavoured to find ways to obtain media exposure for our sport. Lauren Richards and Lee Oliver assisted with Quest Newspaper articles. Thank you Meg, this is a difficult area in the current environment.

Our Junior Section lead by Desley Mackay again had their work cut out for them. Our numbers in the Junior ranks continue to grow and with that the amount of preparation and organisation increases. The need to get more of our Junior Teams on turf to meet the expectations for State Championships is one of the many great challenges they face. The other major concern is the “Ugly Face” of Sport, the abusive sideliners, too many complaints and incidences took place this year – BWHA has a zero tolerance for misbehaviour and we hope that together we can stamp this unnecessary and ugly practice out of our sport. The Junior Management Committee have worked tirelessly to ensure fixture and development opportunities for all members. Congratulations on a job well done. You will read their reports in the Junior Section of this Annual Report.

In 2005 BWHA was rostered to host the State Under 15 Girls Championships in the second week of the June/July school holidays at the SHC. Through the hard work of Brian Kingsford and his organising committee, together with Junior and Senior Management all areas had been organised and prepared, until the only rain Brisbane received for the year decided to fall in one week, during the tournament. In atrocious conditions the committee made the best of a very difficult situation, working with the Tournament Director Lyn Thomas to play as many games as possible between the flooding of the turf and grass fields. The shortened format, probably changed the eventual outcomes, but a result was gained, a state team selected and the tournament concluded. The Junior Section awarded Brian Kingsford the “Junior Volunteer of the Year” for his tireless work, before, during and after the event, a very worthy recipient of this award.

Every year we lament the shortage of volunteers and the increasing workload of those in place. This is true, but it must be acknowledged that we do have a valuable volunteer resource at BWHA. We send 16 Teams to Southern Cross events and 13 teams to State Championships each year. Each team must have a coach, manager and umpire and we thank those people who put their hands up to fill these vital roles. The names are recorded in this Annual Report we hope you will continue to volunteer in the future.

We also have numerous BWHA members to give their expertise to Hockey Queensland and Hockey Australia for State, National and International events. Your contributions are vital to our sport. Congratulations on a job well done.

Providing the framework to participate in the game we love is the basis of our organisation, but creating opportunities that allow our members to participate at a higher level has always been of major importance. Our Development Department headed by Sharyn Simpson (RCD) and with Margaret Dilger (RDO) and Sue Barsby (Administration) go to great lengths to create and sustain opportunities for members at all levels to improve. Coach Education and Player Development continues to be a major focus of BWHA and the results shown in the Development Report will validate the hours and money spent in this important area of our association. Congratulations to these ladies and all the volunteers within their portfolio.

8 BWHA 2005 Annual Report Senior Section

BWHA relies heavily on its’ volunteers, their contribution is enormous. We do have some paid staff, but because of the nature of our “business” paid staff are limited and must work together as a group to ensure the best outcomes and priority is given where needed throughout the year. Our staff are versatile (they have to be). John Bigg the Groundsman (and general handyman) is a valuable part of this team, Stacey Williamson our Administration Trainee is becoming more familiar with her role and is always enthusiastic in her work. The Development staff Sharyn, Marg and Sue assist in all areas of our sport. Nerieada Gill and the Canteen workers are the best in the state. Our Sports Trainers, Junior Technical Officials, Time Stewards and Oressia in the Saturday Office have been wonderful this year, their energy and diligence made things very easy. Thank you to all our staff on a very rewarding 2005.

The 2005 AGM will see our current President Lisa-Maree Jones step down from the position she has held for two and a half years. This is a great loss to BWHA, Lisa displayed all the correct requirements for a great leader: good hockey brain, great passion for our sport, professional status and skills, and a friendly personality. Lisa will reluctantly stand down as President at the AGM due to a change in her career direction. Lisa during her short but dynamic time at the helm has instilled a more streamlined approach to the Management Committee and provided greater governance measures particularly in the area of our financial recording and reporting. From my perspective, it is a great loss to the organisation, her willingness to take on all challenges, lead by example and follow through have made my job much easier. I am sure Lisa will continue to be involved in our association and sport when her work commitments allow and I thank her and wish her all the best for the future. Hopefully, she will eventually be able to come back onto Management to further the innovations she has begun.

I hope the collection of reports following will give you a snapshot of the season that was 2005. For our association to continue to grow it is essential to honour and acknowledge the work that has gone before and plan for sustaining our position in the future.

Our hockey community is vast and varied, during each year our members experience great joys and great loses in their lives. Your hockey community extends its’ sincerest condolences to members who have suffered loses during 2005 and we rejoice in your successes. May you all keep safe during the off-season and I look forward to working for and with you in season 2006.

Kathy Duggan Secretary (Appointed)

TREASURER’S REPORT

Where has the year gone again? It certainly seems to go faster each year. We have once again finished with a small surplus (before depreciation), which is pleasing.

Outstanding debtors this year was only $145.40 (nearly made it), which has been paid in October. Thank you to all clubs’ Treasurers, Seniors and Juniors, for your valued assistance in achieving this result.

The increase in registration fees to Hockey Queensland is very small this year and the other good news is the insurance costs are seniors $37 from $41 and juniors (only juniors playing Full Field hockey $17.00 from $18.00.)

When I wrote my report for the 2004 Annual Report I was very optimistic & predicted that the Queensland Women’s Amateur Sports Council should cease to exist by December 31, 2004. Well the saga is still ongoing but hopefully the end could be within the next 2 to 3 months.

Brisbane hosted the U15 State Championships at the State Hockey Centre this year and thanks to Brian Kingsford and his marvellous committee - we just about broke even - Well Done.

Many thanks to all clubs (Senior & Junior) for their courtesy & co-operation all season.

Our sponsors, Schweppes, Just Hockey, Streets, 4 ‘n Twenty once again supported us during the season and we thank them sincerely.

Thanks to Mrs Gail Reynolds, our Auditor for her continued support of our Association.

To Nerieada and her happy little band of workers - you do a marvellous job each year, which is reflected in the numerous compliments we receive from the players and public - Well Done. 9 BWHA 2005 Annual Report Senior Section

Thank you to Councillor Maureen Hayes, our Patron for her continued invaluable assistance and advice throughout the year – not only during our season.

This year we extended our office space to accommodate our staff in a more comfortable environment and installed a wet weather awning over the front stairs for the comfort of the many users of our facility.

Just in case you think I have forgotten someone well I haven’t. Thank you Kathy, and I not only speak for myself but for everyone associated with BWHA - your assistance and advice are always appreciated.

Thank you to the valued members of Brisbane Management that helped with achieving the final results with our finances by handling their portfolios so well and working within their budgets. Your encouragement and support throughout the season has been fantastic. Also many thanks to Karen Hickling, our Junior Treasurer for her assistance and support.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas & a very Happy & prosperous New Year.

Mrs MARY (Pixie) JOSIFFE President BWHA - 1960 - 1967 Life Member BWHA - 1963 Life Member QWHA - 1972 QWHA and AAWHA Selector AAWHA Hon. Treasurer QWHA & AAWHA Records Secretary

Mary (Pixie) Josiffe carried responsibility for so many aspects of woman's hockey it would be impossible to list them all, not only because Pixie did so much over and above her line of duty, but also because her innate modesty prevented her acknowledging this.

Pixie was elected to President to BWHA only one year into its Downey Park operation and over the next 7 years she proved to be an excellent choice for the burgeoning Association and Downey Park itself. Dubbed by an American touring team a "cow's paddock", there was much to be planned towards and accomplished as it surely took on proportions and condition worthy of the vast numbers of players who joined the ranks.

She was a person who could recruit assistance in the most difficult circumstances. Who else, for example, could have persuaded Mesdames Stendrup and Brown to take over an outside drinks caravan for an entire season, often marooned in a sea of murky water and foul mud. These ladies saw precious little hockey, so tied down with non- stop demands of young and old. Pixie also was a person who respected confidences, and eased the burden of many a player during her years at the helm. Her work for QWHA and the Australian Association has doubtless been well documented. As far as local hockey is concerned, personal testimonies are proffered unasked should her name crop up, as it often does. Even in retirement from top echelon involvement, she worked for Brisbane in the Hockey Shop and on the Archives. Hockey owes Pixie Josiffe a tremendous debt for the loyalty and sheer hard (voluntary) work often carried out against the odds.

Thank You Pixie Josiffe.

10 BWHA 2005 Annual Report Senior Section CONSTITUTION COMMITTEE REPORT

This year was a “Non Event” as far as Constitution Committee Meeting were concerned. Hopefully that will all be rectified this coming season with the committee that have nominated appearing to be really keen to start reviewing the Constitution and the By Laws.

We would encourage the clubs to read the above-mentioned documents and to communicate (in writing) to BWHA of any concerns they may have with any of our current rules and regulations.

Our best wishes to everyone for a Merry Christmas and a Happy & safe New Year

Mary Cockings On behalf of the Constitution Committee

COMPETITIONS PORTFOLIO REPORTS

COMPETITIONS – FIXTURE & GRADING PORTFOLIO

TURF With more clubs wanting to venture onto the turf, 2005 had 15 clubs affiliate early in February to try and gain turf teams.

The following affiliations for each turf division were received - Division 1 - 8, Division 2 – 9, Division 3 – 10 and Division 4 – 12.

Grading games were conducted on Friday 18 February and Sunday 20 February. Division 1 remained the same as 2004. Division 2 had one extra team and the grading games verified that the same teams remained in Division 2 for 2005. It was decided to try to get more teams on turf that Division 3 and 4 would be extended to 10 teams as a trial in 2005. Therefore the only changes in Division 3 were QUT 1, minor premiers division 4 in 2004 being upgraded and Norths 2 a new team coming in to make up the ten teams. Division 4 had three new teams QUT 2, South West United 2 and St Andrews 4 being the extras to make Division 4 ten teams also. Hopefully the teams who missed out on our turf divisions have worked on building their turf skills and are working towards another chance in 2006.

The BWHA turf fixtures commenced on Friday 11 March, utilising the Friday nights before the juniors commenced their fixtures. This covered the days and weekends missed due to Premier League, National Under 21s, Schoolgirls and Veterans.

Fixtures were played at both the SHC and Burringbar Park. Eighteen timeslots were required each weekend to complete the fixture round, starting at 12.15 on Saturday and 10.45am on Sunday, finishing at 7.30pm. This year BWHA ran four games at Burringbar Park on Sunday to cover the extra teams in Divisions 3 and 4.

Due to the number of events scheduled at the State Hockey Centre, Presidents Cup for both turf and grass was not played and the teams on top at the end of the first round were named as the Presidents Cup winners.

DOWNEY PARK – GRASS

This year 48 affiliations were received and after one late withdrawal left 47 teams for the grass divisions. After a few phone calls, asking clubs to reapply for specific divisions, it was decided to field only five divisions on the grass and they were graded as follows - 3 divisions of 10 teams Downey Park 1, 2 and 5. Downey Park 3 had 9 teams and Downey Park 4 had 8 teams. All divisions were competitive with only one team not registering any points.

MONDAY MASTERS

Thirteen teams affiliated for the Masters competition. Pool A had six teams and Pool B had seven teams and a bye. The fixtures started on Monday 4 April and the season finished on the 22 August. Due to one of the fixtures being washed out at the State Hockey Centre, these games were played at the end of the round and this resulted in the semis and preliminary games being played on the Monday and Friday in the same week and the grand final being played on Monday 5 September.

11 BWHA 2005 Annual Report Senior Section This year BWHA continued with the 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw. This opened up the points table and all teams realised that they had to win from the start of the season and not play catch up.

Over the 83 teams in the Association, only 4 teams were awarded the trio of Presidents Cup, Minor Premiers and Premiers in their division. Three divisions had different winners for each of the above awards. Three teams were undefeated in the round games and these were two grass teams and a Monday Masters team.

Thank you to all the ladies who were on the BWHA Fixture & Grading Committees for a job well done. Hope to see you back next year.

Jenny Heron Competition – Fixtures & Grading

COMPETITION: OPERATIONS

This was my second year in this role, which was expanded in 2005 to include Umpires – both Development and Fixture requirements. The required portfolio outcomes could not be achieved without a dedicated group of volunteers, BWHA officials and associated personnel and I would especially like to thank Mary Cockings, Lyn Thomas, Cheryl Kann, Meg Brodie, BWHA Office Staff (Kath and Stacey) and John Thomas for making my life that much easier. I would also like to thank my partner, who generally just lets me get on with what needed to be done, when he could have complained a lot louder!!

TECHNICAL OFFICIALS Obviously, without volunteers, BWHA would not be able to run a competition. Therefore, a big thank you is required (again) to Mary Cockings and Lyn Thomas. These two ladies take on an immense workload to ensure that BWHA continues to run professional fixtures and they also assist the club provided technical officials (on turf fixtures) by sharing their immense knowledge.

Cheryl Kann, Jenny Tidey, Helen Hill, Nadine Hughes, Jenny Heron and Ronda Nix also contributed willingly and often to the “technical” cause. My immense thanks to these ladies for saying “yes” when asked.

If anyone would like to learn how to be a technical official, please approach Mary, Lyn, Cheryl or myself.

UMPIRES - DEVELOPMENT • BWHA again sent quality umpires to State Championships and all of these umpires developed their skills further, whether or not they were awarded another badge. • We also received approval from Hockey Queensland in 2005, to award HQ badges on BWHA fixtures. This means that our badging levels will now be • BWHA Junior (introductory level) • HQ Junior • HQ Intermediate • HQ Senior • HQ Advanced • HQ Open • Full details of what badges can be achieved on what level of fixture will be provided with Club Umpire Coach information in 2006 • During 2005, BWHA was finally able to host a Level 1 Umpires Course, primarily as a result of Jan Hadfield answering our call for assistance. The course was conducted in June after two years of attempts by the Umpiring and Technical Committee. This course is a pre-requisite for any BWHA umpire who wants to nominate to attend a National Championship. During 2005, Debbie Rollason attended two Nationals – U18s and U21s.

UMPIRES - FIXTURES Organising umpires for all the fixtures we run is an onerous job that doesn’t result in many thanks. Therefore, my thanks go to our Umpire Stewards – Cheryl Kann and Meg Brodie – for their efforts again in 2005. Their job is not helped when clubs don’t nominate umpires for testing and we intend to try to (again) address this issue in 2006. We also commenced the allocation of umpires on Masters’ fixtures during 2005 and my thanks go to Kath Duggan for making these as equitable as possible.

12 BWHA 2005 Annual Report Senior Section SPORTS TRAINERS At most venues during 2005, we were able to consistently provide sports trainers of a high standard. However, BWHA did experience difficulties providing sports trainers at turf venues on several fixtures through the season. Usually, we were able to get someone who was at the venue to help out, either until a sports trainer was contacted and arrived at the venue or for the rest of that night. I have already had preliminary discussions with management about how this type of situation can be overcome in 2006, as we need to ensure that our duty of care to our players is met at all times.

We were also called upon to provide sports trainers for BWHA teams attending State Championships and for the whole of the U15 State Championships that were held in Brisbane. Thanks to John Thomas, Emily Worksnop, Chris Kingston-Lee and Warren Kearns – BWHA teams were very appreciative of your understanding, support and assistance.

CONCLUSION Thanks to everyone who helped me in 2005, with the assistance of Mary Cockings, Lyn Thomas and all of the other BWHA staff, volunteers and sports trainers, we got there.

COMPETITIONS: RECORDING & REPORTING (MATCH SECRETARY REPORT)

Once again, a closely contested fixture season has resulted in the normal end of season battle for the minor premiership and places in the semi-finals. Both grass and turf fixtures again relied on the last day round matches to ascertain final placings. Congratulations to both turf and grass grading committees for a most difficult task well done. With the many and varied interruptions to fixtures, the task of the fixture committees became even more onerous. A big thank you to these ladies for their persistence and diligence.

Only four teams won the big three awards in their division: Presidents Cup, Minor Premiers and Premiers. These teams were Ascot 5, Kedron Wavell 6, Kedron Wavell 7, and Easts Masters Division 1. Three divisions had different winners for each of the big three: Division 2, Division 4 and Masters Division 2. These results indicate the closely fought nature of the competition across the divisions.

Thank you to all club officials, June Snarski, Mary Cockings and all volunteers who assisted in controlling fixtures at both turf venues. Without your dedicated efforts, my portfolio would have been extremely difficult to maintain.

DEVELOPMENT PORTFOLIO REPORT

REGIONAL DIRECTOR of COACHING (RCD)

One again 2005 promised to be another busy year with the player and coach development calendar full of development opportunities offered for almost 12 months of the year. It was great to see International Hockey returning to Brisbane with the Hockeyroos taking on Korea in August. What was more pleasing was the amount of local support the Brisbane hockey community showed coming out in droves to cheer the “Roos” to victory on the night. Many of our players where fortunate enough to participate in the “Kookaburra Clinic” where they had the opportunity to “rub shoulders” and be coached by our best in Australia.

Player and Coach Development

The Development department programs are reviewed regularly and changes made, if necessary, so that a flexible forward thinking approach is followed. Such was the case this year with the decision to no longer conduct development programs for our U13 and U15 players. The programs have been a major event on the Development calendar over the past 7 years and a huge task to organize. Despite their success in the past it was decided after serious discussion that they no longer addressed the needs of current hockey community. Also taken into consideration was the increased number of development opportunities offered to players nowadays.

13 BWHA 2005 Annual Report Senior Section To replace the development programs and to facilitate the selection process for our State Championship team’s, selection trials were conducted over 4 weekends on turf and grass for the U13 and U15 age groups during March and April. U18 selection trials were conducted over 3 weekends as in the past few years. Whilst the trials required a huge commitment from our selectors, volunteers, parents and staff we have received positive feedback and is planned to continue in 2006 with minor changes. Many thanks to our selectors and coaches for the time, commitment and efforts during the selection trials it was greatly appreciated and valued.

The U11 program has continued to grow and will continue to be conducted in 2006 with slight changes.

Premier League, Open and Age Championships, & Southern Cross League After selection of our teams and coach appointments made, each team had between a 3 to 6 week training block. Results wise our U11 teams have been our only shining light in 2005, cleaning up all divisions at the annual Southern Cross tournament. Unfortunately, our team’s shared mixed fortunes with 2 runners up in Division One, one team losing after extra, extra time and the other having a last minute goal scored against them. The inclement weather experienced at our U13 and in particular our U15 championships had an impact on final placings of our team’s. Despite this our U15 Brisbane 3 and Brisbane 4 teams played off for the Division 2 championship, with Brisbane 3 being victorious. Special mention and congratulations to the U15 organizing committee, our coaches, managers and parents for the patience and support displayed during the week under such trying conditions.

Whilst these results are disappointing they do not reflect the strength of our teams as a whole. It is one of the main aims of the development department to ensure our teams are given the best possible preparation so as they can achieve best possible results. I look forward to 2006 with optimism and I am confident we will once again be on the winning podium.

In addition to our teams successes many individual players have achieved higher representative honours. I know that many of these players have worked very hard to achieve this recognition.

Congratulations to all on your selections in Australian Team/Squads, Queensland Team/Squads, and Queensland Best 16/Talent ID Squads in 2004. The number of these players in each age/division is as follows – *(Individual players name appears in records section of annual report).

Hockeyroos Squad/Team 5 Australian Development Squad 1 Australian U21 Team/AIS Team 4 Scorchers Team/Squad 8/9 Qld U21 Team/Squad 10/3 Qld U18 Team/Squad 2004 10 Qld U18 Team/Squad 2005 5/1 Qld U15 Team/Squad 5/1 Qld U13 Team/Squad 1/4 Qld Secondary Schoolgirls 11

BWHA also organised, conducted and facilitated the following additional player and coach development opportunities:

• Southbank Institute 10 players aged between 17 to 22 years of age were selected and invited to be part of the inaugural program. The program is partially sponsored by Southbank, financially supported by BWHA and conducted by Hockey Queensland for metropolitan based players. The program provides services to the players who have been talent identified, but have not yet secured a position within the QAS squad. Its other aim will be to create an opportunity where the players can improve and excel in an elite squad environment. • BWHA Squad As part of our ongoing commitment to player development 14 players participated in a program being conducted over the last 12 months. The aims of the program are to provide additional development opportunities for players to reach their full potential. It was structured to cater for the individual needs of each player through offering both on-field services and guidance in relation to off-field services. Players selected and invited to attend have been talent identified by selection in State under age teams and squads. • Club development programs, Pine Hills, Pine Rivers and North’s 4 – 6 week program. • Schools (RDO). 14 BWHA 2005 Annual Report Senior Section • Training programs to assist State Team selected and shadow players prepare for National championships. • BWHA U13 teams competed against visiting teams from New Zealand and Townsville. • BWHA Team competed in the very competitive International Schools Southern Skies Tournament held in July resulting in a very creditable runners-up prize. • BWHA have been supporting the Brisbane Indoor Hockey competition for the past 6 years by submitting 2 development teams for competition - Division 1 and Division 2. We have also achieved great results from Brisbane players being selected for State teams. • Golden Circle HQ Coaching Clinics attended by Talent ID players from U15 and U13 State Championships. • 23 coaches successfully completed their Level One Coaching Course. • Level O course conducted in conjunction with Minkey and Modified Guides day. • Hookin2Hockey Skills Day in conjunction with Minkey/Modifed. Big Thank-you to our State U18 Players for their assistance and excellent coaching provided to our “babies” at Rasey Park. • 15 Coaches participated in BWHA Coach Development Day conducted over 2 Sunday mornings for 3 hours each.

Summary I look forward to travelling to Canberra in December to attend Hockey Australia Coaching Conference, Hockey Queensland Coaching Conference and Hockey Australia Female Coach Mentoring meeting being held in conjunction with the women’s Champions Trophy. I anticipate that I will be able to bring back many useful ideas and helpful information from the conferences that we can put into practice to ensure we stay at the fore front of the development of our game.

In conclusion, I would firstly like to express my sincere gratitude and congratulations to all those volunteer coaches, selectors and managers of our representative teams from U11 to Premier League for a job well done. I would like to acknowledge and give praise to both Junior and Senior Management for their tireless efforts and the enthusiasm during 2005. This is no doubt one of our association’s biggest strengths.

My second thanks go to Office staff Kath and Stacey for their continued support and guidance in all things administrative and rules/policies wise.

Last applauses and gratitude go to my Development Department co-workers Sue Barsby and Margaret Dilger. Both have contributed their skills, experience and abilities to ensure the development department improves its services and are able to aim even higher next year.

Wishing you all a happy and safe holiday.

Sharyn Simpson Regional Director of Coaching (RDC)

REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT OFFICER (RDO)

As the Development Officer in Brisbane Women’s Hockey, it is encouraging to see the participation rate increasing within the Brisbane area. This is due to the commitment of all people involved in the many varied aspects of the sport. Evidence of the increase in numbers can be seen on a Saturday morning at Rasey and Downey Parks. Further evidence is the number of nominations for the U11 Development program, which has increased enormously.

Again, identifying and appointing coaches to teams has become an ongoing dilemma for the Development Department. Whilst opportunities are always open for interested coaches (U11, U13 & U15 development programs, Level O & 1 courses), we struggle to find coaches for teams. Coaches are encouraged to participate in programs and nominate for teams that they believe they could coach and any support needed will be provided by Development. All players, coaches and managers associated with Brisbane teams are to be congratulated and thanked for your efforts. I am sure your reward, although not in monetary terms, is watching the players play to their ability and their participation within the sport.

Various schools have asked for assistance in running programs for their schools. These requests are usually always met, although further follow-up from clubs would be an ideal scenario.

15 BWHA 2005 Annual Report Senior Section Personal achievements attained by players are to be congratulated. They represent Brisbane, Queensland and Australia proudly. I know they all work hard to achieve these accolades and the memories they will have will no doubt be positive and stay with them for a long time to come.

Thank you to the office staff – Kathy and Stacey – and to the Development staff – Sharyn and Sue – for your tolerance during the year. A special thanks to Sharyn, who picked up the extra work when I wasn’t available.

Management have been again been very supportive during the year and it is appreciated. I had commitments in other areas of hockey early in the year and I am grateful for the support BWHA Management showed, in allowing me to fully expend my energies in this area. The arrangement was successful and I believe that BWHA will benefit in future years from the knowledge gained.

Wishing you all the best for the holiday season and hope to see you all returning in 2006.

Margaret Dilger Regional Development Officer

UNIFORMS & EQUIPMENT

This year we dressed approximately 500 ladies and girls for Brisbane rep teams, some for Southern Cross and others for state titles. A few times we were getting them back one day and had to be out the next which keeps us on our toes but all in all we coped. Without the help of my trusty book, Jenny Tidey and Sue Barsby I wouldn't have been able to do the job so I send them a big thank you.

Rhonda Bentley Uniforms Officer

TOURS REPORT

Another successful year, with most Brisbane teams making the top 4 at each of their Championships. Travel to and from tournaments and championships went smoothly and the accommodation was always comfortable, as many country centres are very obliging to our special requests. It was unfortunate the U15, which was held in Brisbane, was rain affected but most players had a fun time anyhow.

A big thank you goes to all the team Managers for liaising with me when they or any player had an issue.

With the introduction of the new Cherry Dress Shirt, some early “teething” problems were bound to occur (and they did) but overall, many positive comments and compliments on the new style were expressed to our Association.

To Rhonda Bentley and Jenny Tidey, our Uniform Convenor and assistant, a big thank you for your tireless work, outfitting 24 teams from Premier League to U11’s. They give up many hours of their time and it is always appreciated.

We will continue to upgrade our lycra uniforms, making the girls more comfortable when they play. Also, if there are any new ideas for apparel, please let us know as suggestions will always be considered.

16 BWHA 2005 Annual Report Senior Section UMPIRES PORTFOLIO

TURF UMPIRES’ STEWARD REPORT

This was another busy year, with umpires’ busy lives making it increasingly difficult for allocations. Jan Hadfield mentored the Division 1 umpires again when she was in Brisbane, and I am sure they all benefited from her feedback. This year she also mentored some Division 2 umpires, which is wonderful for Umpire Development. BWHA is extremely fortunate to have such a highly qualified Umpires Coach in our association.

Our other International and Australian Badged umpires mentored and assessed the younger Division 1 and 2 umpires. Thank you to Alyson Aleksic, and especially to Lyn Hill and Annette Crandell for the dedicated efforts in this area.

Thank you also to Sonya Fisher, Liz Lobb, Lauren Harten, Kathy Duggan and particularly Heather Scraggs for mentoring and assessing the Division 3 and 4 umpires when they were available. Their commitment to BWHA Umpires Development is very considerable – and much appreciated.

The fruits of the BWHA Umpiring Mentoring Program is evident once again in the number of Hockey Queensland Umpiring Badges awarded to our umpires again this year.

Thank you to the Club Umpires Convenors for all their work in passing on the allocations to their umpires – and finding substitutes when necessary. Yours is not a very popular or easy job! But I certainly appreciate all your hard - and often onerous –work!

And finally, special thanks to BWHA Management, Lyn Thomas, Jan Hadfield, Jenny Heron, Kathy Duggan and Lyn Hill for their support and encouragement once again this season.

Cheryl Kann Turf Umpires Steward

GRASS UMPIRES’ STEWARD REPORT

Congratulations to the umpires at Downey Park who were awarded badges in 2005. To them and to all the other players who umpired each week my thanks for doing the job, as without umpires there is no game. It is hard and sometimes thankless work. The Umpiring Committee have done an excellent job in their selection of umpires to attend State Championships as when these umpires are awarded badges it helps the whole Association.

The requirement of having umpires sign in with the time steward has become the accepted procedure and contributed to a more organised umpiring system. The weekly handout continues to be a reliable method of passing information to the players.

I have enjoyed working with the players who have been tested for badges and salute their commitment to umpiring almost every week and hope there will be more next year. It has been heartening to see some clubs accept their responsibility to increase their pool of umpires and to actively assist them. Many clubs are training umpires on junior divisions, which appears to be increasing the pool of senior umpires.

A problem is the quality of the umpires in the lower grades. During the season I have endeavoured to give the lower grades some higher ranked umpires to help them enjoy their hockey. We are gradually increasing the number of umpires being tested on the lower grades, which brings mentors and testers to these games.

My thanks to Lyn Thomas who has an enormous knowledge and is so willing to help, without her assistance the season would have been chaotic. Also my thanks to Cheryl Kann who assesses umpires and gives feedback. Gaye Henderson, Penny Truslove and Donna Gallagher made a difference by working with umpires in a mentoring role.

Also many thanks to umpires who were willing to do whatever was asked. My thoughts turn to, Chris West (will miss her next year), Marg Brown, Donna Gallagher, Lesley Bennett, Ruth Bloxham, Robyn Sutherland, Amanda Gould, Stacey Williamson and the many others who stepped onto the breech.

My continuing thanks to the Club Umpire’s Convenors, who patiently survived my errors and the many changes I made when the errors were found. Thank you, one and all.

Meg Brodie Grass Umpires Steward 17 BWHA 2005 Annual Report Senior Section PROPERTY & FACILITIES PORTFOLIO REPORT

The P& F Portfolio is never a dull one, but not often for the best of reasons. Fixture Saturdays at Downey Park bring a range of exciting developments from blocked plumbing to attempts to burn down the public toilets. I would especially like to commend the members of Junior and Senior Management for the aplomb with which they deal with each drama as it unfolds.

As per last year, the biggest issue with the portfolio has been the condition of the fields. The delays to the lease renewal and the lack of rainfall have not assisted us in any way. The lease renewal is progressing again, which will provide a formal schedule for grounds maintenance for all parties that use the fields over the year. This will hopefully counteract any previous issues that have arisen with the condition of the fields at the completion of the softball season. Unfortunately there is nothing that can be done about the lack of water and the current Brisbane City Council restrictions on watering. We are investigating our options in this area and will have to liaise with the Council to provide some guidance as to how the fields can best be maintained under the current restrictions.

The capital works on the expansion of the administrative facilities at Downey Park were completed prior to the season commencing this year. They appear to have been well worth the money spent; providing a demarcation between the development and administrative areas to allow an increase in productivity in both sections and also providing a far more effective match office area for weekend fixtures. Work was also required on the Rasey Park clubhouse externals due to the dangerous condition of the old first floor veranda area.

Inside the Downey Park clubhouse a number of measures were implemented to display and protect the Association awards and memorabilia. The most impressive of these is the trophy casing, which was constructed with the volunteer labour of Max Travers. The Downey Park clubhouse was hired out for a number of events this year to supplement the BWHA income stream and was not only the venue for the BWHA Grass Presentation Dinner, but for the Turf Presentation Dinner as well.

I would to thank all my workers for the season, mainly being Nerieada (best burgers in Brisbane) Gill and her troops in the canteen; and Denise Byrne in the bar, with assistance when required by either P&F Committee member Angela (Bud) Coleman. I would also like to thank all those who volunteered their assistance this year when asked and most especially to my outstanding committee: Jenny Tidey, Joyce Proctor, Petra Faas, John Bigg, Robyn Sneddon, Bev Broadfoot, Caroline Schomberg and Mary Cockings. As I appear to have failed to entice anyone else into nominating for the position next year, it appears I will be back and thus I expect my committee to come along for the ride - see you all in 2006.

If anyone feels like some exercise or fitness training in the off-season, rain dances on the fields will always be welcome.

EVENTS AND PROMOTIONS REPORT

The season was opened at Downey Park on Saturday 16 th April with an afternoon tea shared with our life members. This is always a great day for these members as a chance to ‘catch up’ and enjoy some hockey as well.

Each club is allocated a raffle day to help raise funds for their club. Nominations for these dates were taken from clubs and where possible, clubs were allocated their nominated date (or as close to this as possible).

President’s Cup was not held in 2005, as there was not sufficient time to do this. Instead the club that was on top of their division at the time Presidents Cup would have ordinarily been played, was awarded this title. The women’s President’s 12 was selected based and awarded on the individual points that players had collected throughout the season up to the end of the first round. These were announced and presented to the winner teams and players at the end of year grass and turf dinners in August.

18 BWHA 2005 Annual Report Senior Section The Grass end of year dinner was held at Downey Park on the Saturday 6 August 2005 at a cost of $20.00 per person. As usual it was a terrific success with all attending players appreciative to the chance to get together socially and celebrate a great season. On the night minor premiership trophies and ‘player of division’ for DP6 to DP1 and the 2 Masters Divisions were awarded. Judy Keen (from Kedron Wavell Club) was again a fabulous MC for the night and kept the event lively and entertaining with her endless supply of humorous jokes and stories. The dinner was a self-serve buffet supplied by All About Catering. There were roast meats, vegetables, pasta and bread rolls and more than enough food for people to have seconds if desired. The meal cost $13.95 per person and this included food, condiments, cutlery and high-quality plastic plates. The dessert was supplied by the Cheesecake Shop and was a choice of mud cake or cheesecake (of which the cheesecake seemed to be the most popular). We had a number of raffles - with winners choosing a prize from the selection provided until they were all gone.

The BWHA Turf Dinner was for the first time held also at Downey Park on the Friday 26 August at a cost of $25.00 per person. The night was a great success and for many of the turf players their first trip to Downey Park. It was a great opportunity to showcase the fantastic venue and facilities that BWHA have available. Pre-dinner nibbles were prepared and served by members of the canteen staff. The dinner was again supplied by the All About Catering @ $13.95 per person, however with the addition of china crockery for an extra $1.10 per person (to increase the feel of the night). Dessert was also a larger selection of cheesecakes, mud cakes and tortes provided (at a discounted price) from the Cheesecake Shop, plus a variety of cheese platters. A selection of cans of soft drink was supplied by Schweppes for each table at no cost. Additional toilets were hired for the night (as the two upstairs were not enough for the volume of people in attendance). Kathy Duggan was MC for the night and did a great job controlling a somewhat vocal crowd. Minor Premiership and individual trophies were handed out on the night, with many of our valued sponsors represented on the night. Ronda Nix from Nixenco, sponsor of the President’s Medal, presented Carly Lennon with the award for 2005. The President’s 12 players were also given their shirts by our sponsors 4 ‘n Twenty on this night. Just Hockey supplied the raffle prize for the night.

Grand Final day at Downey Park was on Saturday 3 rd September, with major premiership trophies and playing and umpiring medallions handed out to the winning teams.

Grand Final day for turf divisions was on Saturday 10 th September at the Sate Hockey Centre. Major premiership trophies and individual medallions were awarded to players and umpires.

All of these events would not have been possible without the continuing support of the other management members and volunteers. Special thanks go to the wonderful bar staff that volunteered their time at the Grass and Turf dinners, Kathy Duggan who seems to do everything with great ease and Joyce Proctor whose support was invaluable at the life member’s afternoon tea and end of year dinners.

I would like to thank you all for your help and guidance this year, and I am just sorry that I have not had more time to help with all activities in BWHA. I regret having to resign from the committee for the 2006 season, but as work commitments increase, I don’t feel that I can give the time that is required.

39 ______BWHA 2005 Annual Report Junior Section JUNIOR CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT

What a fabulous season we have had in 2005 and how quickly it has ended. It seems like yesterday we were having planning meetings for 2005 and now we are planning for 2006.

Our two big events this year were the State Under 15 Championships and the Under 11 Southern Cross. The State Championships was held at the State Hockey Centre. We needed a Championship Convenor to organize the tournament and we were fortunate to appoint Brian Kingsford for this position. The week ran well until the heavens opened up on us. Thank you to Brian and his committee who did a terrific job. Brian was also awarded Junior Volunteer of the Year for his hard work – congratulations.

The Under 11 Southern Cross was also a successful day, I am sure everyone who was involved had a great day. We also had great feedback from centres who fielded teams.

Being at the Under 15 Championships and Under 11 Southern Cross and also managing an Under 13 team, the success that all the players achieved at these levels is a credit to our Development Department. Thank you to Sharyn Simpson and Marg Dilger and their team of Coaches and Selectors for the work in the area of development of all our players.

Thank you to Rhonda Bentley and Jenny Tidey for all their hard work outfitting our Junior Representative Players.

With Saturday mornings starting at 7 am for Junior Management, the help from Resh who worked in the office and Bronwyn (Snr Management), let us get things organised before the games started.

We also had Kathryn Foster, Kathryn Duggan and Katrusha Zalucki working for us in the Tech Benches at the J1 & J2 competition on Friday nights. These girls made our jobs a lot easier. Krystal Easten was our Minkey/Modified Coordinator, she did a magnificent job this year – thanks Krystal.

Thanks to Kathy Duggan, Stacey Williamson and Sue Barsby. We would find hockey difficult to run without your continuous help. Also thank you to John Thomas, Chris Kingston-Lee, and all the other sports trainers who gave assistance to our injured players, Lauren Hickling the voice of Junior Hockey and Nerieada and her staff in the canteen for looking after us during the season. To all members on Senior Management, thank you for your support.

I would like to thank the ladies on Junior Management – Karen Hickling, Rhonda Manthey, Libby Roberts, Marg Brown, Chris O’Sullivan and Ros Marshall for their support and dedication - the committee has worked well together this year. Unfortunately a few of these ladies won’t be able to commit next year but please still drop into the office on Saturday morning and have a coffee and a laugh with us, which we did a lot of this year. To all the new members congratulations, I am sure you will have an enjoyable year.

JUNIOR SECRETARY’S REPORT

With the initial help of Libby Roberts and the on going support of Kathy Duggan I was soon put to work checking Registrations, Clearances and Birth Certificates. The hardest thing I found was the multitude of documents that were not handed in upon registration of a player. I think club secretaries need to be more diligent when registering new players. In saying this I do realize they are volunteers as are we all, but I would like to suggest that a player not be registered until the required paperwork is forth coming.

When I was asked to take on a role with in Junior Management I never realized what the season would bring. Friday Nights with turf, Saturday mornings on the park (as the season went on it

40 ______BWHA 2005 Annual Report Junior Section ended up being Saturday afternoon at SHC watching A Grade), Sunday mornings on the park for Rep trials etc, then there were the meetings and meetings upon meetings. During all this I saw some great games of hockey and met some wonderful people, volunteers all of them, all there for the same cause so the girls could play hockey and enjoy it.

I would like to thank Kathy Duggan for answering every question I threw at her and always being encouraging and understanding. What a huge role you have within the Association and still always ever so helpful.

Many thanks to Desley, Karen, Libby, Margie, Ros and Chris for your help and support through out the season - I will really miss our Saturday mornings in the office were we always had a laugh over something. Thanks to the club secretaries for your patience and understanding.

Have a safe and happy off-season and I’ll look forward to seeing you all again next season.

JUNIOR TREASURER’S REPORT

It seems that each hockey season passes in the blink of an eye. I have now been on Junior Management for three seasons and have enjoyed the friendship and knowledge gained enormously. As usual Mary Cockings has had her finger on the pulse and continues to keep BWHA in a healthy financial state. Mary is constantly on the lookout for bargains and for ways to channel money back into hockey. One of those ventures was to have the Senior Turf Dinner at Downey Park this year. Feedback indicates it was an enjoyable evening and the big winner is our association because we keep the profits. So from everyone in our association and from me – thank you Mary!

This year also saw the introduction of new spreadsheets to help Mary and I track player registrations and hopefully simplify things from a club perspective. During planning sessions for 2006 it is hoped that we may be able to simplify things even further so that the enormous burden experienced by clubs at the beginning of the season can be avoided. If we can simplify the payment of registration of players at the start of the season it will allow clubs more time to finalise player placements and reduce adjustments for our already overworked Admin staff.

I would like to thank all of the clubs for their continued support as we improve our day to day operations. Fines this year weren’t too bad and all clubs did their best to get their records right. A big thank you to Kathy and Stacey who always do a great job to ensure everyone gets on the park each Saturday. To Sharyn, Marg and Sue it seemed a very busy year for Development, so thanks for your support and another enjoyable year of hockey. Thanks to Nerieada and her staff for their cheek and great food. We had very capable and delightful young ladies working at Downey Park and on the tech benches this year. Oressia Zalucki, Kathryn Duggan, Kathryn Foster and Katrusha Zalucki did a great job this season and we hope they will all return in 2006.

Junior Management is losing some of its valuable team members, so to Libby, Chris and Ros thank you for all that you have contributed to hockey this season and in past seasons. Enjoy your time with family and friends. To Desley, Rhonda and Margie – thanks, and let’s hope our energy levels can continue and that we find some more valuable people to continue the good work in progress.

To all - enjoy the Christmas break and let’s look forward to a greener 2006.

JUNIOR COMPETITIONS REPORT

This year we continued to use the spreadsheet developed in 2004 - my thanks to Karen Hickling for her help in ironing out the bugs. Entering the information each week was

41 ______BWHA 2005 Annual Report Junior Section significantly sped up by asking the match cards to be submitted with the team lists in alphabetical order. Many thanks to Club Secretaries and Junior Council reps for their assistance in getting team managers to write the cards up this way. Their tireless work ensured that most teams were presenting well-written cards very early in the season. We continued to use the template on Microsoft Publisher that was developed in 2004 for the stickers using the team lists from the junior spreadsheet with more clubs using this system and again cutting down on the number of fines.

The completed spreadsheet for each team was electronically returned respectively to each club providing clubs with a comprehensive set of playing statistics for each of their teams from U11 to J1 for the 2005 season.

After a huge effort by clubs to submit all players details on the required spreadsheet template we began the implementation of the Hockey Australia Database with all registered players uploaded onto the system. A small trial was conducted to test the accompanying programs for suitability to our competition set-up and whilst more work will be done on this in the off-season it is anticipated that we will change to using this program in 2006. Once correctly set-up the new program shows enormous promise and will eliminate a lot of double work by uploading match results and ladders straight to the web as well as providing BWHA with valuable playing statistics and other useful reports at the touch of a button.

I would like to thank all the office staff for their advice, willing assistance and support throughout the season - thanks to Kathy, Stacey, Sue, Sharon and Marg. The entering in of information each week for each player of the 105 teams in the Junior competition is a huge job and it would not have been possible to produce the weekly points table without the assistance of each member of the Junior Management Committee. Many thanks to Desley, Rhonda, Karen, Marg, Chris and Ros and Oressia on the Saturday Competitions desk for their help and support through the season.

Libby Roberts Junior Match Secretary

VOLUNTEERS

This year like every other year BJWHA would not have been able to function with out the help of a large number of volunteers.

2005 was a busy year with Brisbane hosting the Under 15 state carnival and our usual hosting of the Under 11 Southern Cross Carnival, requiring a lot of volunteers to help these events to run smoothly.

The BJWHA committee would like to thank Brian Kingsford, the U15 Carnival Convenor and the members of the carnival organising committee: L Thomas, M Cockings, D Mackay, L Grimes, J Proctor, M Nothard, J Straayer, L Crick, R Manthey, R Marshall, J Mackay, S Pragnell, R Burke, L Roberts, J Heron, K Hickling, M Young and K Battams for their great contribution, also to all the other Brisbane parents that helped out during that week in very trying conditions.

Mandy Nothard this year took on the roll of Ball Persons Steward and did a great job training and organising a new group of girls, who all had a great time and were very excited to be able to ball girl for the Australia v Korea game this year.

42 ______BWHA 2005 Annual Report Junior Section The junior committee would like to thank all the players, parents, relatives and friends that helped out during the year, whether it be putting out the posts, helping in the canteen on selection days or helping to stack away table and chairs - volunteering in any form helps to make all our jobs easier.

MINKEY & MODIFIED CO-ORDINATORS REPORT

Firstly, I would like to thank the management of Brisbane Women’s Hockey Association (BWHA) for giving me the opportunity to become the Minkey and Modified Hockey Coordinator for 2005. After coaching hockey for a few years, I was excited to have the chance to experience a different and challenging job within BWHA. Overall, it has been a rewarding and enjoyable time for me.

The BWHA Minkey and Modified competition started on 16th April ending on 13 th August, during this time I came across a considerable number of coaches, players, parents and club support staff, and I was impressed and inspired by their enthusiasm and commitment to junior hockey and its development. This in itself made the job more enjoyable and I feel that with continued support in this area, grass roots junior hockey has much to offer BWHA.

I was confronted each Saturday by many challenges. With the support of the BWHA development team, and Chris Kingston–Lee, who went above and beyond the duties of sports trainer, I managed to accomplish the task of Saturday morning hockey. It has been their support and guidance which has helped me coordinate this year’s competition.

On June 4 th 2005, a Minkey and Modified skills day was organised and held. It included various skills exercises for the Minkey and Modified players, all which were conducted with the aim of enjoying hockey and to realise how much fun it can be. It was held mid-way through the season, in the anticipation that skills learnt on the day might be put into practice in the remaining of the season.

The skills day was a success and nearly all teams attended with participation rates high. The skills day revolved around a series of stations where skills were taught and practiced by the junior players. The variation was enjoyed by all who attended. The coaching personnel were drawn from ranks of the Queensland State under -18's hockey girls’ team. The players conducted the skill sessions over the morning and their experience, attitude and coaching skills were much appreciated by the young players. The feed back from all who attended was of a positive nature and an enjoyable day was experienced by all coaches, players, parents and support staff.

Looking towards next year, Minkey and Modified hockey can only get bigger and better. With the launch of the ‘Hookin2Hockey’ program, a new sport participation growth program, focusing on maximum participation and fun - the numbers of Minkey and Modified players are bound to rise. I feel it is important that Brisbane Women’s Hockey Association promotes this area of junior grass hockey as the future of junior hockey is embedded in this development program.

Krystal Easten Minkey & Modified Coordinator

JUNIOR UMPIRES REPORT

43 ______BWHA 2005 Annual Report Junior Section Due to the success with the trial with Mentor/Assessors on all Junior Turf Games in 2004, the program was continued in 2005.

While not as many badges were awarded as the first year, the benefit of having qualified assessors at all games is invaluable. The standard of umpires on the turf games is improving and many more people are receiving badges that normally would not nominate to do so. It is also giving valuable professional development to the ladies who act as the mentors.

My special thanks to Sonya Fisher, Liz Lobb, Lauren Harten, Rowena McKinnon, Kylie Patteson and Lesley Bennett for their diligence in attending, mentoring and assessing throughout the year.

We have had significant numbers of players badged in the Junior Section for the past two years. It is now time for these umpires to continue on the pathway of improvement. Those umpires who have now gained their HQ Junior Badge (formerly BWHA Intermediate) should be moving in 2006 to Division 3 and 4 for upgrading. Those umpires who have received their BWHA Junior Badge in 2004 need to be allocated to Junior Turf Games in 2006 to strive for their HQ Junior badge. The umpires who received BWHA Junior badges in 2005 need to umpire regularly at J3, U13A level to consolidate their knowledge and gain experience for upgrading in 2007.

It is only through this cycle that we can continue to maintain the number and quality of umpires required to umpire each week in BWHA.

At the time of writing this report it is unknown which divisions, and what timeslots the Juniors will have on turf in 2006. With the Redcliffe Turf hopefully online, we may be able to move another Junior division onto the turf. This will mean more Mentors and Assessors will be required and I hope that our higher badged umpires in the association will assist in this endeavour. Only Mentoring and Assessing continually can ensure our quality and quantity of umpires increases.

Kathy Duggan Turf Umpires Steward

It was comforting to see that a few more of the clubs throughout BWHA are doing their homework and encouraging our young players to also umpire. That was evident with the large number of Junior badges given out this season. It was a shame that I wasn’t able to get more mentors/assessors to help throughout the season and thus be able to give out more badges.

Since Clubs are able to receive a Government Grant for the development of umpires it does make for a better standard of umpires overall. Some Clubs used the umpire development program written by Kathy Duggan and made minor changes to suit their own clubs. Thanks Kathy – for your time and effort trying to make umpiring more part of the game and not such a chore! Hopefully some of these young umpires will carry on and become Div 1 umpires in the next couple of years.

I do encourage BWHA to make necessary changes to the rules as I believe that all representative players starting from U13 should be umpiring – as it is a necessary part of understanding the game and should be incorporated into their training schedule.

Thanks to all who did give up their Saturday mornings to come to Downey Park and either umpire or mentor/assess throughout the season. Enjoy your break and hope to see you all again in 2006

BALL PERSON STEWARD REPORT

The highlight of this season was without doubt, being asked to attend at the International game between Australia’s Hockeyroos and Korea held at the State Hockey Centre on 18 th August. It was with much trepidation that our 7 most experienced and committed girls (Phoebe, Laura, Caitlin, Vanessa, Sarah, Kirsty and Atherli) stood shoulder to shoulder with some of the best hockey players in the world listening to the strains of both national anthems. Early nerves were soon replaced with concentration on the task to be performed while at the same time experiencing a deep enjoyment and appreciation of the skills of the game.

Throughout the season the girls attended for the Southern Cross League, the Premier League, the BWHA Div 1 Turf Grand Finals and their commitment to the hard work involved was well rewarded by being able to observe their mentors from close range. If only they didn’t make it look so easy! This has certainly provided the girls with a greater incentive to improve their own game and determination to become the best players that they possibly can!

On behalf of all the ball persons, we would like to extend thanks to Lyn Thomas and Mary Cockings (Technical Bench/BWHA) and to Janne Ellis (HQ) for their continued support and encouragement. Thanks must also be extended to the parents who willingly provided transport (and food funds) to the various competitions.

If there are any players U13 to U15 who might like to consider joining the squad next season please register your interest through your Club Secretary with the BWHA office and we look forward to another season of great experiences next year.

U15 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP CONVENER’S REPORT

This year the Brisbane Women’s Hockey Association hosted the 2005 U15 Queensland State Hockey Championships. The venue for the tournament was the State Hockey Centre at Colmslie and the Association, in conjunction with Hockey Queensland, began planning for a stand out tournament. Trials for both grass and turf teams were carried out, resulting in the appointment of two Brisbane turf teams and two grass teams for the tournament.

49 ______BWHA 2005 Annual Report Junior Section Lyn Thomas was named Tournament Director with Jenny Heron appointed as Assistant Director, Mary Cockings as Technical Director and myself as Tournament Convener. Along with Lisa-Maree Jones, Kathy Duggan and Stacey Williamson a volunteer committee was assembled to enable the smooth setup and completion of the Championships. The committee consisted of – Lyn Thomas, Mary Cockings, June Snarski, Desley Mackay, Liz Grimes, Joyce Proctor, Mandy Nothard, Julie Straayer, Lisa Crick, Rhonda Manthey, Ros Marshall, Linda Mackay, Sharon Pragnell, Robyn Burke, Libby Roberts, Karen Hickling, Marcelle Young and Karen Battams.

The committee arranged for enough marquees (in conjunction with the Brisbane Junior Boys who had their state championship the week before ours), chairs, tables and volunteer food vendors to feed the masses, and rosters for tech benches, setup and close downs, amenities checks, refreshment tent assistants etc were all established.

Negotiations with Southside Sports club, the lessee of the canteen and restaurant at Colmslie began in earnest and with the experienced assistance of Nerieada Gill (BWHA Canteen Convener at Downey Park), a standard lunch order form for the teams was setup and utilised throughout the Championships.

Everything was organised and prepared and with a total of 26 teams playing on 4 fields everyone was looking forward to a fantastic tournament. However someone forgot to invite the weather bureau and in retaliation they organised a rain depression to test us out. Even though the weather pattern was one that hadn’t been seen in around 50 years the tournament went through and it is to the credit of Lyn, Jenny, and Mary that the teams were able to play enough games to obtain an outcome. The Brisbane teams all played exceptionally well with the final results being Brisbane 1 – third, Brisbane 2 – eighth, Brisbane 3 – first and Brisbane 4 – second in Division 2.

All the regional centres that sent teams also need to be congratulated on their patience and understanding, I thank them for that. Thanks must go to both Janne Ellis and Greg Gunner who made themselves available when I really needed them, especially Greg who assisted in maintenance of the fields during some very trying times.

I would also like to personally thank the following people who went above and beyond the call to assist me with the daily setups and regular changes to cope with both the weather and game changes: Cliff and Allanah McNamara, Graham Roberts, Mal Curry (also for the use of 7 portable shade structures), John Luff, Mandy Nothard, Terry Keating, David Goelder, Liz Grimes and Keith Wilkinson. I would also like to sincerely thank all the Brisbane parents and players as they played and acted in the real spirit of a Championship and I believe represented Brisbane exceptionally well.
