My final year as President has seen the completion of our 2007-2010 strategic plan together with a large amount of work by the Board and Staff in developing our next strategic plan to take us through to 2015. Hockey WA continues to be one of the leading State Sporting Organisations in Australia and 2010 has seen a further increase in co-operation between us and other State Hockey Associations. We remain a highly efficient and effective organisation that continues to be looked upon in high regard by many hockey and non-hockey organisations. Most new teams came from the junior section, with Riverside Lions experiencing the most growth in this area. Rangers and Southern River again showed significant growth – Rangers for the sixth consecutive year and Southern River for the fourth since their inception. 2010 marked the first year that all 24 affiliated regional associations provided their membership database via HockeyNet. This data revealed that there are more than 10 000 hockey players competing in competitions throughout country WA. The continued use of the HockeyNet program will allow us to track regional participation statistics in the same way we do for the metropolitan clubs and has been a strategic priority for Hockey WA over the past three years. Another strategic priority was to create a hockey presence in under-serviced areas. Three metropolitan areas were identified to establish recruitment programs in – Atwell, Quinns Rocks and Ellenbrook. All three programs were located in high population-growth areas where young families are prevalent, thus providing a good match for hockey. Joondalup Lakers and Eastern Blades must be recognised for their assistance with the Quinns Rocks and Ellenbrook programs, along with the Australian Sports Commission’s Active After-school Communities program which provided support during the recruitment phase. Hockey WA’s Officiating Reference Panel has been in action since 2009, overseeing all aspects of umpiring. One aim was to increase the number of elite player-umpires.
