QTIC Annual Review 2007-08 ANNUAL REVIEW 2007-08 CHairman’s letter – LOOKING AHEAD WHO IS THE QUEENSLAND TOURISM INDUSTRY COUNCIL? 2 QTIC BOARD 2 As we start a new financial year, the tourism industry finds itself in a more difficult environment than usual. Circumstances are not working in our favour and more than ever QTIC’s ROLE 2 we are challenged to be innovative and determined in carving out a successful future for QTIC ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE 3 our industry. QTIC has been engaged on many fronts to do its share for the industry and to THE TEAM 4 ensure that all possible support from governments is marshalled for our common purpose. NETWORK PARTNERSHIPS 4 Most recently, we have been pulling out all stops to generate some additional financial QTIC-Y 5 government commitment to the industry in response to the reductions in aviation capacity BUDGET FUNDING / LOBBYING 6 into Queensland. The efforts to draw attention to tourism’s predicament were well MEDIA 7 rewarded, with State and Federal Tourism Ministers announcing a combined $8 million MIGRATION 8 injection into marketing budgets for Queensland destinations. NATIONAL EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS 9 This would not have been achieved without the support of the QTIC membership and the SKILLS FORMATION STRATEGY 9 Stephen Gregg weight that this membership gives us in our negotiations with government. CLIMATE CHANGE 10 Chairman The dramatic events of the last months capped off a hectic year with a large number of MORETON BAY 11 significant tourism issues requiring the attention of industry and QTIC. We maintain a close QUEENSLAND WATER COMMISSION 11 and productive working relationship with various state government agencies and Ministers BUSINESS REGULATION 12 and have frequent and direct contact with the new Federal Minister and his department. LIST OF COMMITTEES / SUBMISSIONS 14 There are few relevant issues, federal or state, that QTIC does not become involved in on NTA – naTIONAL AGENDA 15 your behalf. From labour shortages, tax law changes, national parks policies, infrastructure QUEENSLAND TOURISM AWARD WINNERS 16 planning, immigration laws to climate change, QTIC does speak up for the Queensland EVENTS 18 industry consistently. SALUTE TO EXCELLENCE 18 We have also been able to step up our work in providing practical support for businesses through CAREERS THAT ROCK 19 making available resources in training, business mentoring and awards, grant applications, AUSSIEHOST 20 recruitment, research and advice.     etropic 12.2 (2013): Tropics of the Imagination 2013 Proceedings | 197 Paronella Park: Music, Migration and the ‘Tropical Exotic’ Annie Mitchell Southern Cross University The history of Paronella Park is a tale of migration from Europe to far north Queensland; underscored by the music of a diversity of cultures that weaves a rich tapestry through this narrative; set to a backdrop of tropical wilderness in the rainforest of Mena Creek, via Innisfail. Jose Paronella arrived in north Queensland, Australia from Catalonia, Spain in 1911; where he spent many years working as a cane cutter. In 1929 he bought thirteen acres of land on Mena Creek to fulfil his dream of creating a Spanish castle and tourist resort. By 1935 Paronella’s dream had become a reality, with the completed construction of Paronella Park: a Spanish castle, picnic area, ballroom, movie theatre, hydro-electric power system, tennis courts and botanical gardens. Paronella Park became the cultural hub of the Mena Creek-Innisfail area, providing entertainment in movies, dances, balls and theatre. North Queensland was a base for Allied Service personnel during World War II, so musical activities increased greatly during this time with Australian and United States soldiers frequenting Paronella Park on rest and recreation. From this heyday, Paronella Park has survived destruction by cyclones and floods, fire, years of neglect, and finally restoration of much of the property. Over the past decade, Paronella Park has won extensive tourism awards. In 2010, to commemorate Paronella Park’s 75th anniversary, the musical The Impossible Dream was written and performed in Cairns. This paper traces the musical history of Paronella Park, investigates the cultural and musical activities performed there, identifies the bands and musicians who played at Paronella Park, their musical styles and repertoire, discusses the contribution of Paronella Park to tourism in north Queensland, and evaluates the influences of Spanish culture and music on the identity of the Mena Creek community.

    The Day the Falls Stopped Flowing: Devastation and Resilience in Tropical Queensland Bianka Vidonja Balanzategui Summary On 9 February 1946, a fifty-foot wall of water carrying huge cedar logs engulfed “the most interesting playground in Queensland”—Paronella Park—a Moorish Castle built in tropical rainforest on the banks of Mena Creek. A stormy sea of water tossed logs as if they were matchsticks and battered the castle. When the water dispersed the dream of Catalonian migrant José Paronella lay in ruins. Demonstrating the resilience needed in tropical Queensland, Paronella Park has risen from its ruins more than once and is today an award-winning tourist destination despite the floods and cyclones that regularly threaten it with destruction. On 9 February 1946, a fifty-foot wall of water carrying huge cedar logs engulfed Paronella Park, wreaking havoc on the Moorish-style castle and its surroundings. Located close to cascading falls on the banks of Mena Creek, south of Cairns, the Park was described in 1936 by the Cairns Post newspaper as “the most interesting playground in Queensland.” When the water dispersed, the dream of Catalonian migrant José Paronella lay ruined. This was a human-made catastrophe.
