A Rhetorical Debate on Latin and Vernacular Languages∗ he story of Griselda has always raised many interpretative problems. One could perhaps suggest that when Boccaccio has his storytellers T quarrel over the meaning of the last novella, he is anticipating the critical controversy that this text has sparked throughout its long and suc- cessful career in Europe. The first critic and reader of Boccaccio’s tale was Petrarch, whom Boc- caccio met for the first time in Florence in 1350. The following year, Boccac- cio met the elder poet in Padua to invite him, unsuccessfully, to assume a position as a professor at Florence’s Studium. The cultural and personal bond between Boccaccio and Petrarch dates back to that time.1 This friend- ship, marked by intense correspondence and mutual invitations, was always affected by an inherent tension over Dante’s poetics. For Petrarch, the Com- media was irreconcilable with his well-known aristocratic and elitist con- ception of literature; Boccaccio, however, soon became Dante’s ‘advocate,’ promoting the poetics of the Commedia.2 The Dante debate between Boccaccio and Petrarch expresses a differ- ence of opinion concerning vernacular literature, its dignity and its appro- priateness for dealing with issues traditionally entrusted to Latin. Famili- ares 21.15, addressed to Boccaccio, is an important token of Petrarch’s atti- tude towards Dante. Abstract My thesis explores the way in which the Italian language and literary culture contributed to John Milton’s early development as a poet (over the period up to 1639 and the composition of Epitaphium Damonis). I begin by investigating the nature of the cultural relationship between England and Italy in the late medieval and early modern periods. I then examine how Milton’s own engagement with the Italian language and its literature evolved in the context of his family background, his personal contacts with the London Italian community and modern language teaching in the early seventeenth century as he grew to become a ‘multilingual’ poet. My study then turns to his first published collection of verse, Poems 1645. Here, I reconsider the Italian elements in Milton’s early poetry, beginning with the six poems he wrote in Italian, identifying their place and significance in the overall structure of the volume, and their status and place within the Italian Petrarchan verse tradition. -

Poetry Without End: Reiterating Desire in Petrarch’s Rvf 70 and 23 Manuele Gragnolati and Francesca Southerden Our article focuses on two canzoni from Petrarch’s Rerum vulgarium fragmenta or Canzoniere, Rvf 23, “Nel dolce tempo de la prima etade,” and Rvf 70, “Lasso me, ch’io non so in qual parte pieghi.”1 By reading them comparatively, we aim to set up a dialogue between the concepts of return and conversion and to explore the relationship between the form of the texts and the subjectivity it shapes. In particular, we are interested in investigating how Petrarch blurs the distinction between beginnings and ends and how, defying conclusion, his lyric poetry gives form to a sort of masochistic pleasure. Rvf 70 is an intertextual canzone (and part-cento) that culminates in an explicit textual return of the poet’s own poem 23, the so-called canzone delle metamorfosi, in which the poetic subject undergoes a series of transformations explicitly modelled on Ovid. The incipit of canzone 23, “Nel dolce tempo de la prima etade,” forms the final line of canzone 70 and is the last in a series of quotations of the incipits of earlier poems, each of which closes one of the stanzas of Petrarch’s poem and reconstructs what Franco Suitner has termed “il retroterra della lirica romanza” [“the hinterland of romance lyric”].2 All the incipits closing the five stanzas relate to a concept of love as essentially tyrannical, obsessive, and compulsive. The first stanza ends with the incipit of the Occitan poem now thought to be by Guillem de Saint Gregori, “Drez et rayson es qu’ieu ciant e· m demori,” which Petrarch attributed to Arnaut Daniel and which embodies a paradoxical form of desire that involves subjecting oneself to love even to the point of death, and finding pleasure in it.3 The other incipits belong to the Italian lyric tradition. -

Petrarch claimed she was real, but her name, played upon in Italian in the poems, also epitomizes poetic ideals (Laud = praise; L’aura = breath, spirit; L’oro = gold; Laurel = laureate: (n.) a person who is honoured with an award for outstanding creative or intellectual achievement: a Nobel Laureate or Poet Laureate. [Expositions 4.1&2 (2010) 47-62] Expositions (online) ISSN: 1747-5376 Avignon vs. Rome: Dante, Petrarch, Catherine of Siena THOMAS RENNA Saginaw Valley State University ABSTRACT In the fourteenth century the image of ancient Rome as Babylon was transformed into the positive idea of Rome as both a Christian and a classical ideal. Whereas Dante disassociated Augustine‟s Babylon from imperial Rome, Petrarch turned Avignon into Babylon, a symbol of an avaricious papacy. For Catherine of Siena Avignon was not evil, but a distraction which prevented the pope from reforming the Italian clergy, bringing peace to Italy, and launching the crusade. “There is only one hope of salvation in this place! Here, Christ is sold for gold!”1 And so Francesco Petrarch denounced the Avignon of the popes as the most evil place on earth since the days of ancient Babylon. This view of the Holy See should have disappeared when the papacy returned to Rome in 1377, but it did not. On the contrary, the castigation of the sins of pontiffs intensified, as subsequent ages used this profile to vilify the papacy, the clergy, the French monarchy, and the French nation.2 Not to be outdone, some French historians in the twentieth century sought to correct this received tradition by examining the popes‟ worthy qualities.3 It is curious that this depiction of Avignon as the Babylon Captivity has enjoyed such longevity, even in college textbooks.4 “Corruption” is of course a value judgment as much as a description of actual behavior. Doubtless Pope Clement VI did not think of his curia as “corrupt.” Contemporary citizens of Mongolia do not see Genghis Khan as the monster of the medieval Christian chronicles. -

Though later in life the poet will celebrate conjugal love in Book IV of Paradise Lost (1667) and in Sonnet XXIII Methought I saw my late espousèd saint (1673), in 1645 Milton proffers his lyric of erotic desire in the Italian language alone. His choice is both unusual and entirely fitting. How did Milton, born in Cheapside, acquire Italian at such an elevated level of proficiency? When did he write these poems and where? Is the woman about whom he speaks an historical person or is she merely the poetic trope demanded by the genre? Though relatively few critics have addressed the style of Milton’s Italian verse, an astonishing range of views has nonetheless emerged from their assessments. -

Cooper Cardinal Pietro Bembo’s accomplishments as a poet, linguist, philologist, and historian are well known, but his activities as an art collector have been comparatively little studied. In his writing, he directed his attention to the past via texts—Ciceronean Latin and Petrarchan Italian—for their potential to transform present and future ideas. His assembly of antiquities and contemporary art served an intermediary function parallel to his study of texts. In this dissertation I investigate Bembo as an agent of cultural exchange by offering a reconstruction of his art collection and, in so doing, access his thinking in a way not yet accomplished in previous work on this writer. Chapter One offers a historiographic overview of my topic and collecting as a subject of art historical study. Chapter Two maps the competition and overlapping interests of collectors who bought from Bembo’s heirs. -

In 1326 his father dies On April 6th, 1327, Good Friday Petrarch sees Laura for the first time. Laura de Noves, born in 1310 and married to Hugues II de Sade in 1325. By 1336 Petrarch begins to compile Rerum vulgarium fragmenta also called Il Canzoniere, or in English, The Song Book. By 1374 when Petrarch dies it contains 366 poems, mostly sonnets to and about the love of his life which he could never have, Laura. Of the 366 poems 263 would be written while she was alive and 103 after her death. Laura would die while Petrarch was traveling later in 1348, on Good Friday. As Petrarch writes: on the same hour of the same day but 21 years after he first saw her. She would leave behind 11 children and a husband who would remarry within a year. A year later in 1337, and on the road again he travels to Flanders and the Brabant and then to Rome for the first time in his life. Later that year, his first child, Giovanni is born out of wedlock. Who the mother was is unknown, but by Petrarch's own account he did not treat her as well as he should have. The relationship between Petrarch and his son was a disappointment to Francesco. He describes Giovanni as "Intelligent, perhaps even exceptionally intelligent, but he hates books". Giovanni stayed with Petrarch until he was 20 years old (1357), at which time living in Italy, Petrarch will send his son to Avignon and in 1361 Giovanni would die from the plague.
