  • University of Alberta 'Indo-Jazz Fusion'
University of Alberta ‘Indo-Jazz Fusion’: Jazz and Karnatak Music in Contact by Tanya Kalmanovitch A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Music Edmonton, Alberta Spring 2008 Abstract An inherently intercultural music, jazz presents a unique entry in the catalog of interactions between Indian music and the west. This dissertation is situated in a line of recent accounts that reappraise the period of Western colonial hegemony in India by tracing a complex continuum of historical and musical events over three centuries. It charts the historical routes by which jazz and Karnatak music have come into contact in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, both in India and abroad. It presents a detailed account of the history of jazz in India, and Indian music in jazz, and examines jazz’s contact with Karnatak music in three contexts—jazz pedagogy, intercultural collaboration, and the Indian diaspora in the United States—illustrating the musical, social and performative spaces in which these musics come into contact, and describing the specific musical and social practices, and political and social institutions that support this activity. Case studies in this dissertation include an educational exchange between the Jazz and Contemporary Music Program of the New School University (New York, NY) and the Brhaddhvani Research and Training Centre for Musics of the World (Chennai, India), directed by the author in December 2003 – January 2004; a 2001 collaboration between Irish jazz/traditional band Khanda and the Karnataka College of Percussion; and analyses of recent recordings by pianist Vijay Iyer, saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa and drummer Ravish Momin.

Il apprend le piano et la guitare en autodidacte et entre en 1967 à la United Nations International School de Manhattan, où il commence à étudier la composition, études poursuivies à la Webster University de Saint Louis (Missouri). • Tzadik Ka‐Tamar Yifrah : Radical Jewish Culture and the Future of Jewish Music
Presentation title: Tzadik Ka-Tamar Yifrah : Radical Jewish Culture and the Future of Jewish Music, by Daniel Scheide Daniel Scheide is a cataloger for Florida Atlantic University. He currently writes a column on Jewish music for the AJL Newsletter and also serves as co-editor for adult book reviews. Description Since the early 1990s, Jewish music has undergone a burgeoning revival and a drastic transformation. While being grounded in klezmer, hazzanut and other traditional sounds, today’s Jewish music is being informed by free jazz, avant-grade composers, hardcore punk and a wide variety of other outside influences. At the forefront of this movement are recent MacArthur Genius grant winner John Zorn and his record label, Tzadik. This talk will be a brief introduction and overview of one of the most exciting developments in modern Jewish culture. Tzadik Ka‐Tamar Yifrah : Radical Jewish Culture and the Future of Jewish Music Daniel Scheide In the past 15 years or so, Jewish music has been going through an incredible transformation and revitalization. I’d like to talk to you about a movement within contemporary Jewish music called Radical Jewish Culture and because we have a limited amount of time, I’d like to focus on the central figure of that movement, John Zorn. John Zorn was born in 1953 in Queens, NY. His mother was a professor of education at New York University, and his father was a hairdresser; they were secular Jews who were very determined to raise him as a blank slate with no connection to his Jewish heritage. He says “My parents were brutal when it came to eliminating the past.” 1 As a child, his first significant encounter with music was the film “Phantom of the Opera” where he was exposed to organ music.

  • Judaistische Anmerkungen Zu John Zorns Radical Jewish Culture
Abstract The musician, composer, producer, and label owner John Zorn is one of the most influential figures in New York’s downtown scene. Since the early 1990s he embodies his Jewish identity with the help of his platform of the ‘Radical Jewish Culture’ in an artistically and discursively powerful way. In this article some design elements of the produced CDs, the quotations and liner notes therein as well as the names of the bands and the titles of the tracks will be considered and commented on with Judaic knowledge. Two sources used by Zorn in order to find Hebrew titles could be verified: ‘Oedipus Judaicus’ by William Drummond and ‘Sefer Yetzirah’ by Aryeh Kaplan. Einleitung Der 1953 geborene Alt-Saxophonist, Komponist, Bandleader, Musikprodu- zent sowie Label- und Klubeigner John Zorn gehört sicherlich zu den ein- flussreichsten Persönlichkeiten der New Yorker Downtown-Szene der letzten 134 BILL REBIGER drei Jahrzehnte.
