It Comes in Many Forms: Islamic Art from the Collection, Oct. 23, 2020 - Dec. 18, 2021 This exhibition presents textiles, decorative arts, and works on paper that show the breadth of Islamic artistic production and the diversity of Muslim cultures. Throughout the world for nearly 1,400 years, Islam’s creative expressions have taken many forms—as artworks, functional objects and tools, decoration, fashion, and critique. From a medieval Persian ewer to contemporary clothing, these objects explore migration, diasporas, and exchange. What makes an object Islamic? Does the artist need to be a practicing Muslim? Is being Muslim a religious expression or a cultural one? Do makers need to be from a predominantly Muslim country? Does the subject matter need to include traditionally Islamic motifs? These objects, a majority of which have never been exhibited before, suggest the difficulty of defining arts from a transnational religious viewpoint. These exhibition labels add honorifics whenever important figures in Islam are mentioned. SWT is an acronym for subhanahu wa-ta'ala (glorious and exalted is he), a respectful phrase used after every mention of Allah (God). SAW is an acronym for salallahu alayhi wa-sallam (may the blessings and the peace of Allah be upon him), used for the Prophet Muhammad, the founder and last messenger of Islam. AS is an acronym for alayhi as-sallam (peace be upon him), and is used for all other prophets before him. This article presents an integrated picture of a rich tradition developed in early kabbalah (twelfth–thirteenth century) that viewed the Torah as participating and identifying with the God‑ head. Such presentation could serve scholars of religion as a valuable tool for future comparisons between the various perceptions of scripture and divine revelation. The participation of God and Torah can be divided into several axes: the identification of Torah with the Sefirot, the divine grada‑ tions or emanations according to kabbalah; Torah as the name of God; Torah as the icon and body of God; and the commandments as the substance of the Godhead. The article concludes by examining the mystical implications of this participation, particularly the notion of interpretation as eros in its broad sense, both as the “penetration” of a female Torah and as taking part in the creation of the world and of God, and the notion of unification with Torah and, through it, with the Godhead. ABSTRACT ISAAC SATANOW, THE MAN AND HIS WORK; A STUDY IN THE BERLIN HASKAIAH Nehama Rezler Bersohn Isaac Satanow, one of the most prolific writers of the Berlin Haskalah (Jewish enlightenment), typifies the maskil (an enlightened Jew) of his time. He was born and reared in Podolia, Poland at a time when Frankism and Cabbalah were reaching their peak influence. He subsequently moved to Berlin where the Jewish enlightenment movement was gaining momentum influenced by the general enlightenment and Prussia's changing economy. Satanow's way of life expressed the con fluence of these two worlds, Podolia and Berlin. Satanow adopted the goal of the moderate Haskalah to educate the Jewish masses, and by teaching them modern science, modern languages and contemporary ideas, to help them in improving their economic, social and political situation. To achieve this goal, he wrote numerous books and articles, sometimes imitating styles of and attributing the authorship to medieval and earlier writers so that his teaching would be respected and accepted. -

PRESS RELEASE »NEW YORK STORIES« ELBPHILHARMONIE BRINGS THE MUSIC OF THE BIG APPLE TO HAMBURG – FROM 30 MARCH TO 4 APRIL Hamburg, 27 March 2017: On six evenings featuring a whole variety of big names, audiences at the Elbphilharmonie can hear different facets of the wealth of musical styles that New York City is home to. The programme ranges from John Zorn’s »Bagatelle Marathon«, contemporary pieces for string quartet with the JACK Quartet and from an evening with Michael Feinstein and the hr- Bigband, playing gems from the »Great American Songbook«, to rap with Zebra Katz, great art pop with Anohni and the ensemble yMusic, and electronic music with Tyondai Braxton. The climax of the festival will be two concerts given by the New York Philharmonic under its principal conductor Alan Gilbert with cellist Yo-Yo Ma and the soprano Christina Landshamer. In addition, one of America’s leading contemporary composers, John Adams, will be making a guest appearance. It's an unchallenged claim that New York never sleeps. And if a city never sleeps, its inhabitants obviously have more time for everything, including playing music and listening to it. And it’s true that New Yorkers set great store by music – not least because so many aspiring musicians gravitate to the city from far afield in the belief that this is the only place where they can make their fortune. How did Frank Sinatra put it in the song he made immortal, »New York, New York«? – »If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere«. For decades, the East Coast metropolis, consisting of the five boroughs Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island, was the focus of longing for countless immigrants from all over Europe. -

McGarry, Tantur Ecumenical Institute, Jerusalem Over the last few decades, scholarly interest in political relations between the Christian world and the State of Israel has focused primarily on the Roman Catholic Church’s view of the Zionist movement (before the founding of the State) and its perceived slowness in establishing full diplomatic relations with the Jewish State. But here in his Cross on the Star of David: The Christian World in Israel’s Foreign Policy, 1948-1967, Dr. Uri Bialer addresses the question in the opposite direction. Drawing on Israel’s diplomatic history from 1948 to the 1967 war, Dr. Bialer traces the attitude and actions of the fledgling Jewish state towards the Christian world. Currently occupying the chair in International Relations – Middle East Studies in the Department of International Relations at the Hebrew University, Dr. Bialer has opened up a seldom- addressed topic both fascinating and illuminating: In its first twenty years, how did the new-born State of Israel, in its foreign diplomacy and internal policies, address the Christian world? Bialer, a perspicacious historian with the necessary language skills to analyze recently declassified (1980) Israeli governmental archives, recognizes and honors the complexity of his topic. He carefully notes the multiple factors affecting the new state’s diplomats and policy makers in assessing their delicate but forceful formulation of policy towards the Christian world – both those Christians living in Israel and those countries, often overwhelmingly Christian, whose support the young state desperately needed, even and maybe especially after its United Nations’ authorization. -
