YEH’s first season as an official program of the USEA was 2005, and the program’s goal is to identify young horses that possesses the talent and disposition that, with proper training, can excel in the uppermost levels of eventing. While the ultimate aim is to identify the future four-star horses, many fine event horses who will excel at the lower levels will also be showcased. The Program gives owners and breeders the opportunity to showcase the potential of their four- and five-year-old horses while encouraging the breeding and development of top-level event horses for the future. Classes focus on education and preparation of the event horse in a correct and progressive manner. Brian and Penny Ross founded the Virginia Horse Trials in 1989, and organized the event through its 25th Anniversary in 2014. Andy Bowles took over the organization of the Virginia Horse Trials in 2015, maintaining it as a destination for East Coast eventers in the years to come. With 600 acres holding 19 show rings, a 4,000 seat coliseum, 8 barns, cross- country course ranging from Starter to CCI3*-L, and campgrounds, the Virginia Horse Center offers a first-class facility for the Virginia Horse Trials. Originally from Bermuda, he became the first Bermudian rider to compete at an international level in 1980. Peter became a Canadian citizen in 1995 and now resides in Ocala, Florida during the winter and Canada in the summer. He has competed in three Olympic Games, Badminton, Burghley, and two World Equestrian Games. Peter is a member of the USEA Future Event Horse Committee, is a USEF ‘R’ Dressage Judge and a certified USEA YEH and FEH championship judge. Debbie Adams Based in New Jersey, Debbie Adams is a certified YEH judge, a USEF ‘S’ eventing judge, and Level III ICP instructor, and has a deep depth of knowledge when it comes to sport horses. Owner, rider, judge, and committee member of the USEA YEH program; Debbie has been working with the YEH since the early stages of the program. A proven international rider, Debbie specializes in producing quality young event horses. Her D.A. stamp can be seen in top event horses across the country including the 2015 recipient of the Holekemp/Turner Young Event Horse Le Lion d’Angers grant, D.A. Duras. When she’s not judging YEH competitions, she can be seen judging dressage at prestigious international events across the country. Tim Holekamp Tim Holekamp is a retired ophthalmologist specializing in retina surgery. He has been around horses all his life, and together with his wife Cheryl, who is an S” dressage judge and Grand Prix rider, they have been breeding Trakehner sporthorses for 30 years on their New Spring Farms, in Missouri and Ocala. They have stood eight stallions, all of whom themselves competed successfully through at least two-star eventing or FEI-level dressage, including one currently eventing in Europe at the four-star level. Perhaps the best known is Windfall, Olympic team bronze and Pan-Am individual gold medal winner. Their homebred Tsetserleg is currently the holder of the Pinnacle Trophy and won the individual gold medal at Lima Pan-Am Games in 2019. Tim is an amateur photographer and student of eventing and event horse breeding. He completed the training program for breed inspector and presently is in charge of the American Trakehner Association’s inspection review committee, after a four-year term as president of that Association. His focus now is on US Three-Day Eventing team development through co-chairing the USEA YEH Committee with Marilyn Payne and working on the USEF’s Eventing Owners Task Force. Marilyn Payne Marilyn Payne is a FEI 4* Eventing Judge and a USEF “S” Dressage Judge. She was the President of the Ground Jury at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil, the 2010 World Equestrian Games, and judged at the 2008 Olympics in Hong Kong and each of the six four-stars in the world. Marilyn is also a distinguished trainer, competitor, one of the founders of the USEA YEH program, and co-chair of the YEH Committee. Marilyn frequently teaches judges seminars in the U.S. and overseas for USEF, FEI, and YEH judges. She resides with her husband Dick at their Applewood Farm in Oldwick, N.J. In her downtime, she can be found cheering on her children, Holly and Doug, who are prominent four-star competitors and trainers. Phyllis Dawson Phyllis competed at the highest levels of three-day eventing for over thirty years. She had success on many different horses, most all of whom she trained herself. In 1988 Phyllis represented the United States in the Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea, riding Albany II, finishing tenth overall, the best of the Americans eventers. She also rode for the United States Equestrian Team in 1997, successfully competing Snowy River in the Open European Championships at Burghley, England. Along with her mother Grace, Phyllis founded Windchase in 1986, and has built it into the lovely eventing, boarding and breeding facility it is today. Phyllis has served on the USEA Board of Governors, various USEA Committees, and has worked with both the Future Event Horse and Young Event Horse programs as a young horse expert and breeder. Phyllis has also judged at the USEA Future Event Horse Championships in the past. The Holekamp/Turner YEH Lion d’Angers Grant The Holekamp/Turner Young Event Horse Lion d’Angers Grant will award the highest scorer of the USEA Young Event Horse 5-year-old Championships, both East and West Coast Championships combined, with cash that will enable them to travel to the FEI World Young Horse Championships at Mondial du Lion in Le Lion d’Angers, France for the 7-year-old three-star Championships. Grant recipients who are North American bred will be awarded with $17,500 to travel to Le Lion d’Angers.
