This was the winner’s second start, having won over the same distance by five lengths at Chantilly on his debut. LAKE VOLTA MAKES ALL FOR LISTED SURREY STAKES SUCCESS The Mark Johnston-trained Lake Volta made all to land the Listed Surrey Stakes, a seven-furlong contest for three-year-olds, in good style and earn his first victory at Stakes level. The son of Raven’s Pass set the tempo from the front and, having rounded Tattenham Corner, tacked across to the stands- side rail before galloping on strongly to the line and winning eased down by four and a half lengths from Aurum (Exceed And Excel), with Rufus King (Iffraaj) a further two and three quarter lengths back in third. This was his 13th career start and third win, although he has been quite consistent in defeat, being placed six times, including in the Listed Champion Two-Year-Old Trophy, the Listed Appeal Stakes, the Listed Spring Cup Stakes and the Gr.3 Sirenia Stakes. Bred by Godolphin, he is the first foal out of the Listed October Stakes runner-up Ghanaian (Shamardal), who is a half-sister to the Listed Land O’Burns Fillies’ Stakes winner Free Roses (Fasliyev). The Gr.3 Prix de Meautry winner Indian Maiden (Indian Ridge) and dual Listed scorer Love Spirit (Elusive City) feature under the fourth dam.
