A shortened version of it appeared in Genii: The International Conjurors’ Magazine, October 2017, pages 79-86.) “Be an example to the world, ever true and unwavering. Then return to the infinite.” —Lao Tsu, Tao Te Ching, 28 How can I say goodbye to my dear friend Eugene Burger? How can we say goodbye to him? Eugene was beloved by nearly every magician in the world, and the outpouring of love, appreciation, and sadness since his death in Chicago on August 8, 2017, has been astonishing. The magic world grieves because we have lost a giant in our field, a genuine master: a supremely gifted performer, writer, philosopher, and teacher of magic. But we have lost something more: an extremely rare soul who inspired us to join him in elevating the art of magic. 2 There are not enough words for this remarkable man—will never be enough words. Eugene is, as he always said about his beloved art, inexhaustible. Yet the news of his death has brought, from every corner of the world, testimonies, eulogies, songs of praise, cries of lamentation, performances in his honor, expressions of love, photos, videos, and remembrances. All of it widens our perspective on the man; it has been beautiful and deeply moving. Even so, I have been asked by Eugene’s executors to write his obituary, a statement of his history, and I am deeply honored to do so.

Adrian Smith, then current Dean of the Society of American Magicians. At the time, Harold as he was known to his friends, had the largest magic library in the world. Often Harold was a dinner guest at our house and as usual after our meal “the boys” would discuss magic and collecting. Harold’s plan for his books and ephemera was to donate it all to his alma mater, Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. As we all know that’s what happened to his collection. Ed on the other hand disagreed with Harold’s plan and said that when the time came for him to dissolve his library he wanted everything to be sold; so that other collectors could enjoy what he had amassed.

An Interview by John Bannon (from Simon Aronson’s Try the Impossible (2001), pp. 278 - 288) John: So, now that the book is finished, how do you feel? Simon: Some relief, some trepidation. John: Explain each B briefly. Simon: As you=ve seen, I=m not good at explaining anything briefly. John: Well, try it. I=ll cut it down later anyway. Simon: Relief, because the actual writing is the least fun part of creating a book. I love creating, playing around with possibilities, trying things out on you guys. But once the ideas have gelled and have been tested, improved and polished in our sessions, then trying to put it all down on paper gets to be drudgery after a while. So the relief is simply being glad it=s behind me. John: What about the trepidation? Simon: Completing a book is like sending your kid off to college. He=s grown up with you, but now he=s leaving home, he=s on his own, and you wonder how he=ll do. I=ve nurtured the material as best I could, and there=s a bit of me in every trick I create. But at some point, you let go and send it off to the outside world. You hope it will be accepted, but from then on it develops on its own, by its contacts with others. Other magicians will play with it, and hopefully use it, personalize it, and enhance it. I guess it=s just separation pains. But at the same time, I=m eager to share the stuff and get feedback B and maybe someone will really pick up the ball and make a touchdown with it.

BIOGRAPHY Did you know, that top magician Danny Lee Grew has performed for over 1 MILLION people worldwide. The Magic Circle think he is 'hilarious', and in 2016, the president of The Magic Circle Scott Penrose promoted Danny Lee Grew to AIMC (Associate Membership of The Inner Magic Circle with Silver Star for performance - this is the highest level obtainable by performance examination). Also that year, Danny was the runner up in The Magic Circle's Close Up Magician of the Year. Danny Lee Grew has performed his unique and exciting magic all over the world, from America, France, Spain and Kuwait, as well as all over the UK in prestige venues including Her Majesty's Theatre in London's West End and the Olympic Stadium in Stratford (April 2012 - the first entertainer to perform there). In 2018, you can see Danny's family magic show Miraculous Magic at the Brighton Fringe Festival and theatres around the UK. During August, he will be performing in The Summer Show at the West Cliff Theatre in Clacton, the longest running summer show in Britain. Danny has also finished filming some exciting TV projects including portraying Adam Goldberg in The Real Stories of The Social Network, a ITV documentary about Facebook. DOMENICO DANTE FISM International President Dear President, Dear Friend in Magic, My philosophy has always been this: “facts speak for themselves”. You can check what I did in these three/six years, with the precious help of the Int. Vice Presidents and the Consultancy Groups, in my triennial report that will be sent to you soon. There is still a lot to do of course and this is why I am asking for the re-election (according to our Statutes for the last period of three years possible,) to accomplish something that is very important to me, since one of the main goals of FISM is to improve Magic and to raise the level of Magicians: - FISM Competition Compliance System (CCS) that will provide rules and services to Associated Societies to better Qualify their Competition and promote them as FISM Compliance Competition. - FISM Jury Qualification System (JQS) selecting and training qualified Judges to assure uniformed and high-quality judging all over the World. - To go on promoting FISM also outside the world of magic (including Academies and Universities). The Fism Board is already working on this matter and the success of the project matters to me. I want to thank you all for the support you gave to me and the Board during these years. It is a great reward for the really hard job we did.
