The Expert Escamoteur's Equipment
The Expert Escamoteur’s Equipment Tony Shiels An Exploration in Three Parts of Various Aspects of Cups and Balls Conjuring It is strongly recommended that you print this ebook out before reading. Staple the pages together - or better still take the pages to you local Staples or office supply store and have it bound. Add your own notes and ideas as they come to you. That way you will turn this ebook into a valuable reference document. Contents & illustrations copyright © Tony Shiels 1966 and 2006 These articles originally appeared in The Linking Ring, the magazine of The International Brotherhood of Magicians http://www.magician.org There is no charge for this ebook. You are free to share it with your friends provided it is left unedited and in its entirety. Introduction by Quentin Reynolds If you associate the name of Tony ‘Doc’ Shiels with weird, strange and bizarre magick, you will, no doubt, be surprised to discover that in his professional work, the Linking Rings and the Cups and Balls effects, were the stable part of his repertoire. As you read through this manuscript, and bear in mind it was written in 1966, you will be inspired by his enthusiasm for the subject. In more recent times the Cups and Balls has had a revival back onto the streets and is the featured effect by many of magic’s leading street performers. At the rear of this manuscript I’ve listed some recommended further reading, published since Tony’s articles first appeared in The Linking Ring. As publisher of one of Tony’s other books, The Shiels Effect http://www.TheShielsEffect.com I was delighted to discover some of his older writings lost in the files of magazines. -

Adrian Smith, then current Dean of the Society of American Magicians. At the time, Harold as he was known to his friends, had the largest magic library in the world. Often Harold was a dinner guest at our house and as usual after our meal “the boys” would discuss magic and collecting. Harold’s plan for his books and ephemera was to donate it all to his alma mater, Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. As we all know that’s what happened to his collection. Ed on the other hand disagreed with Harold’s plan and said that when the time came for him to dissolve his library he wanted everything to be sold; so that other collectors could enjoy what he had amassed. -

With Ozlen Tuncer
Anthony Darkstone Brook In Conversation With Ozlen Tuncer Ozlen Tuncer is well known by many Magicians around the world. He is also known by his Stage name of Dr. Tora. Although he has not personally met them all, he is known . This is due in great part to his skill as an excellent Communicator. Furthermore, the Laws of the Universe have decreed that the social media of Skype, Facebook and emails should play a role in making his name familiar to many of Magic’s leading names. His photo and reports often appears in issues of The Linking Ring. Within the International Magic community he is known as a Mentalist but to label him as such is not enough. He possesses a great mind and has the ability to think on several levels simultaneously. He has a Ph.D in Psychology which he puts to good use in his performances. Over the years we have got to know each other and he has generously shared his time and thoughts with me. www.magictora.com ADB: Greetings Ozlen. Thank you for taking the time to converse. OT: Thank you Tony. It is really a pleasure for me. ADB: You once told me that Magic is not a hobby for you, nor is it a job, but a passion ... share with us in full what you mean by that ... OT: Yes that is right. I really don’t know how to express it fully in words - Magic is not a hobby, is not a profession for me... It is a passion. It is a passion that I have had since I was born . -

With Walter Zaney Blaney
Anthony Darkstone Brook In Conversation With Walter Blaney The following article was written way back in 2002 and as the saying goes, it has, “withstood the test of time” . Since then, Rory Johnson, who wrote an article on Walter for MAGIC magazine used this article as a basis for his feature. In 2008, I was greatly honored when at the Texas Association of Magicians Convention, I was invited to Produce & Host a Live Talk Show with Walter as the main guest. Other guests on my show were Trixie Bond, Scott Wells, MarcoM, Chuck Lehr , Bruce Kalver , Frances Willard, Glen Falkenstien, Bill Palmer, Walter’s daughters Beck Blaney, Dr.Carol Blaney and Gold Medal Champion Shannon Blaney. And, last but not least, David Copperfield who was a Live phone-in guest. The photos accompanying this article depict some of those wonderful moments. Anthony Darkstone Brook In Conversation With Walter Blaney The phrase, ‘World Class Entertainer’ can only truly be applied to an elite few notable magicians. In the vanguard of that group one name resonates with singular clarity. That name is Walter Blaney. In more ways than one Walter Blaney stands tall in the world of magic. His 6ft – 6inch frame houses the presence of a formidable performer, creative genius and the inventive mind of some of magic’s greatest stage illusions. Lance Burton, David Copperfield, Paul Daniels and Sylvan are just a few of the world’s leading magicians that have used Walter’s magical creations in their shows. David Copperfield is quoted as saying that one of his favorite illusions is none other than Walter Blaney’s – Ladder Levitation.
