Please tell us the first magic trick(s) you were proud to perform and about how old were you? It was a simple key card method trick. I was maybe 11. My cousin showed me a trick he learned on YouTube and I had to figure it out. So I looked up his YouTube search history and found out how the trick worked and taught myself. I started fooling everyone with that effect. To this day I think it is still powerful. (left: 16-year-old Anna) 2. And the first important magic book(s)? Expert at the Card Table, Royal Road to Card Magic, Practical Mental Magic, 5 Points in Magic by Juan Tamariz... so many more I can’t think to name them all. 3. If you were going to a desert island for six months to do a deep dive into your magic what three effects would you take with you to perfect? And what three books would you bring along? The Encyclopedia of Magic or Card College collections, Corinda’s 13 Steps to Mentalism. But to be honest I'm not too sure. Cards, coins, hypnosis for sure 4. You are planning a dinner party followed by your magic show. Among the guests can be any five people from history (living or dead, magician or not). Who would you invite? David Blaine obviously, Elon Musk, Kanye West, Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner 5. What are words of wisdom or advice you can offer for aspiring prestidigitators? It’s okay to take breaks. You will find a greater appreciation for the art when you take space and look at it after taking some time to gain perspective. The Oakland Magic Circle December 2020 Newsletter 5 MAGICAL RESOURCE OF THE MONTH- Best Magic Books “This site was created to select some of the most important books in the field of magical entertainment. We asked a few prominent magicians to list the top-ten magic books they would take to the desert-island. The magicians were not allowed to select their own books and multi-volume books (such as The Tarbell Course in Magic) count as one book.” The magicians who contributed were Daryl, David Regal, Eugene Burger, George Schindler, J.C. Wagner, Jared Kopf, John Carney, Marc DeSouza, Richard Osterlind, Shawn Farquhar, Mike Caveney, Max Maven, Asi Wind, and Jon Racherbau mer. If you click on any of their name s you will see th eir choices. The top ten bo oks are here. If you want to purchase any of the books mentioned in “Five Answers” or “Best Magic Books” we urge you to check with OMC member Byron Walker, one of the world’s foremost magic book dealers/collectors. Write him at [email protected]. His website only shows a fraction of what he sells. PERFORMING VIRTUALLY Most of the lectures we have featured since April have included some discussion about virtual shows. They are working well for some performers and others are not comfortable with them. You miss that immediate audience interaction and there many effects that do not adapt to the medium. Yet there are effects that benefit from the format and you instantly know the names of most of your Zoom audience.

The pack is then cut several times and handed back to the magician. A pile of cards suddenly falls off the pack, leaving the magician holding the spectators card. METHOD When the card is selected by the spectator, the card on the bottom of the pack is crimped by the magician’s pinky. The spectator’s card is then placed on the top of the pack and the pack is cut. This now means that the spectator’s card is underneath the crimped card. The pack can be passed around the room to be cut several times and the spectator’s card will always be under the crimped card. The pack is then handed back to the magician who quietly puts his thumb under the crimped card appearing to be clumsy and allows the cards above his thumb to fall on the floor. The card under his thumb will be the spectators. The magician can also allow the rest of the cards to fall, leaving only the spectators card in his hand. This trick looks amazing because the audience has seen that the magician has not had a lot of contact with the pack and the whole routine has been totally impromptu.

The Expert Escamoteur’s Equipment Tony Shiels An Exploration in Three Parts of Various Aspects of Cups and Balls Conjuring It is strongly recommended that you print this ebook out before reading. Staple the pages together - or better still take the pages to you local Staples or office supply store and have it bound. Add your own notes and ideas as they come to you. That way you will turn this ebook into a valuable reference document. Contents & illustrations copyright © Tony Shiels 1966 and 2006 These articles originally appeared in The Linking Ring, the magazine of The International Brotherhood of Magicians http://www.magician.org There is no charge for this ebook. You are free to share it with your friends provided it is left unedited and in its entirety. Introduction by Quentin Reynolds If you associate the name of Tony ‘Doc’ Shiels with weird, strange and bizarre magick, you will, no doubt, be surprised to discover that in his professional work, the Linking Rings and the Cups and Balls effects, were the stable part of his repertoire. As you read through this manuscript, and bear in mind it was written in 1966, you will be inspired by his enthusiasm for the subject. In more recent times the Cups and Balls has had a revival back onto the streets and is the featured effect by many of magic’s leading street performers. At the rear of this manuscript I’ve listed some recommended further reading, published since Tony’s articles first appeared in The Linking Ring. As publisher of one of Tony’s other books, The Shiels Effect http://www.TheShielsEffect.com I was delighted to discover some of his older writings lost in the files of magazines.

  • Mentalism Mastery
Mentalism Mastery To be proficient in the area of mentalism one must demonstrate the illusion of extraordinary cognitive, sensory or mental abilities. These must be demonstrated in an entertaining manner and work together thematically as an “act.” The performer may use any real-world performable means at his disposal. His methods may consist of pre-show work, sleight of hand techniques, electronics, as well as gimmicks to achieve his goal. If the performer is performing a one-person act, any stooges must be of the impromptu variety; i.e. unknowing audience stooges. This is not to imply that two-performer acts are discouraged, only that the use of secret confederates is not permitted. The mentalist must take a minimal approach to props. Any props used should be as innocent looking as possible. Audience members should be allowed to hold and examine as many of the props as possible. Since the mentalist is supposed to be a mind reader, his props should not lend themselves to suspicion and they should stand up to reasonable scrutiny. Of course, the mentalism must be strong enough to fool an intelligent layman. However, not only must the effect be strong, but it should be properly paced and sufficiently interesting to command attention. A good trick, presented in a drawn out and boring manner, will not be considered mastery. By the same token, an entertaining premise that fails to deliver a convincing demonstration of mental powers will not indicate mastery of the subject. While skilled sleight of hand is not necessarily required to earn the mental mastery award, there are skills that will be judged.

  • Messing with People's Minds Without Rabbits Or Hats
Chapter 1 Messing with People’s Minds without Rabbits or Hats In This Chapter ▶ Introducing magic and mentalism ▶ Deceiving the senses ▶ Looking into the human brain ▶ Examining how mentalism works or millennia sorcerers, shamans and priests used cunning, sleight of Fhand, clever ruses, gimmicks, gaffs and props to validate their authority and maintain control over the masses. Over several hundred years, however, the art of conjuring slowly morphed into a respectable form of entertainment. Magicians became admired for their skills instead of feared for their ‘mira- cles’. The nature of mental magic means that mentalists often walk a very fine line between entertainment and psychic fraud. In this chapter, I provide an introduction to the art of mentalism and the vari- ous ways in which you can, and in certain cases should never, use it. UnderstandingCOPYRIGHTED That Magic MATERIAL Is All in the Mind A mysterious man stands with his back to a woman on stage. He’s almost sinister looking, with his jet-black mane shaved into a widow’s peak. Nothing is said between the two people as they draw images on notepads – she draws the first thing that comes into her mind and he sketches the impressions he’s receiving from her. They’ve never met before, but when they turn around and reveal the drawn images, they match perfectly. 005_9781119953500-ch01.indd5_9781119953500-ch01.indd 9 33/14/12/14/12 88:54:54 PMPM 10 Part I: Going Purely Mental Travelling light Mentalism is simple, but powerful. • With Ozlen Tuncer
Anthony Darkstone Brook In Conversation With Ozlen Tuncer Ozlen Tuncer is well known by many Magicians around the world. He is also known by his Stage name of Dr. Tora. Although he has not personally met them all, he is known . This is due in great part to his skill as an excellent Communicator. Furthermore, the Laws of the Universe have decreed that the social media of Skype, Facebook and emails should play a role in making his name familiar to many of Magic’s leading names. His photo and reports often appears in issues of The Linking Ring. Within the International Magic community he is known as a Mentalist but to label him as such is not enough. He possesses a great mind and has the ability to think on several levels simultaneously. He has a Ph.D in Psychology which he puts to good use in his performances. Over the years we have got to know each other and he has generously shared his time and thoughts with me. www.magictora.com ADB: Greetings Ozlen. Thank you for taking the time to converse. OT: Thank you Tony. It is really a pleasure for me. ADB: You once told me that Magic is not a hobby for you, nor is it a job, but a passion ... share with us in full what you mean by that ... OT: Yes that is right. I really don’t know how to express it fully in words - Magic is not a hobby, is not a profession for me... It is a passion. It is a passion that I have had since I was born .

  • An Overview of Cold Reading Strategies
CHAPTER 11 An Overview of Cold Reading Strategies Chris Roe and Elizabeth Roxburgh INTRODUCTION The standard mainstream explanation for impressive mediumistic communications is in terms of deceptive practices called cold reading. Forexample, incommentingonGarySchwartz’sbookThe Afterlife Experiments,1 which describes a number of experiments with mediums that are claimed to have produced evidence of postmortem communica- tion, Hyman comments that “the readings he presents [ ...] for his case very much resemble the sorts of readings we would expect from psychic readers in general and cold readers in particular.”2 Wiseman and O’Keeffe similarly criticize findings reported by Schwartz, Russek, Nelson, and Barentsen on the grounds that “seemingly accurate readings can be created by a set of psychological stratagems collectively referred to as ‘cold reading.’ ”3 Of medium Rebecca Rosen, Karen Stollznow comments, “like [ ...] many others before her, [she] has her own techniques for cold reading, and possibly hot reading. However, Rosen’s skills are far less impressive than those of cold reading experts.”4 Nickell claims that John Edward’s successful television demonstrations were the result of his skill at cold reading and that Edward was also not averse to gathering information about clients in advance of readings.5 Underdown6 similarly implies that James Van Praagh relies on standard cold reading techniques when broaching topics with a studio audience, and Greasley7 has provided a useful analysis of a mediumistic sitting that featured in 178 The Spiritualist Movement the British TV documentary Is There Anybody There? in terms of strata- gems of cold reading (although they are not referred to as such).
