Please tell us the first magic trick(s) you were proud to perform and about how old were you? It was a simple key card method trick. I was maybe 11. My cousin showed me a trick he learned on YouTube and I had to figure it out. So I looked up his YouTube search history and found out how the trick worked and taught myself. I started fooling everyone with that effect. To this day I think it is still powerful. (left: 16-year-old Anna) 2. And the first important magic book(s)? Expert at the Card Table, Royal Road to Card Magic, Practical Mental Magic, 5 Points in Magic by Juan Tamariz... so many more I can’t think to name them all. 3. If you were going to a desert island for six months to do a deep dive into your magic what three effects would you take with you to perfect? And what three books would you bring along? The Encyclopedia of Magic or Card College collections, Corinda’s 13 Steps to Mentalism. But to be honest I'm not too sure. Cards, coins, hypnosis for sure 4. You are planning a dinner party followed by your magic show. Among the guests can be any five people from history (living or dead, magician or not). Who would you invite? David Blaine obviously, Elon Musk, Kanye West, Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner 5. What are words of wisdom or advice you can offer for aspiring prestidigitators? It’s okay to take breaks. You will find a greater appreciation for the art when you take space and look at it after taking some time to gain perspective. The Oakland Magic Circle December 2020 Newsletter 5 MAGICAL RESOURCE OF THE MONTH- Best Magic Books “This site was created to select some of the most important books in the field of magical entertainment. We asked a few prominent magicians to list the top-ten magic books they would take to the desert-island. The magicians were not allowed to select their own books and multi-volume books (such as The Tarbell Course in Magic) count as one book.” The magicians who contributed were Daryl, David Regal, Eugene Burger, George Schindler, J.C. Wagner, Jared Kopf, John Carney, Marc DeSouza, Richard Osterlind, Shawn Farquhar, Mike Caveney, Max Maven, Asi Wind, and Jon Racherbau mer. If you click on any of their name s you will see th eir choices. The top ten bo oks are here. If you want to purchase any of the books mentioned in “Five Answers” or “Best Magic Books” we urge you to check with OMC member Byron Walker, one of the world’s foremost magic book dealers/collectors. Write him at [email protected]. His website only shows a fraction of what he sells. PERFORMING VIRTUALLY Most of the lectures we have featured since April have included some discussion about virtual shows. They are working well for some performers and others are not comfortable with them. You miss that immediate audience interaction and there many effects that do not adapt to the medium. Yet there are effects that benefit from the format and you instantly know the names of most of your Zoom audience.
