HISTORY of the BOOK Chapter 5. The Invention and Spread of Printing Blocks, type, paper, and markets, contact Impressions of wood blocks on cloth, or metal stamping in clay, wax, and leather, existed long before the idea of movable type was realized in Mainz. As we have seen, scrolls, tablets, and the bound codex book were all fully developed by the 15th century, and the range of materials pressed into use for writing included palm leaves, bark, walls, and skin in addition to vellum, parchment, papyrus, clay and paper. Of these, paper was the last to be invented, and until the creation of synthetic materials in recent centuries and digital modes of display, paper remained the most important and ubiquitous substrate for written language. And though the use of seals and stamps can be traced almost into prehistory, the idea of printing multiple copies of a text for purposes of distribution to a literate audience is more recent. The first printing for texts was most likely invented in China, with Chinese characters cut in the faces of individual wooden blocks, or whole texts cut in a single block.1 But the innovations brought to this art by Johann Gutenberg in the middle of the 15th century changed the scale and scope of printing.2 Not only was movable type a radical improvement in achieving efficiency for reproduction of multiple copies of a text, but the rationalization of labor that was embedded in this innovative shift created a model that would inform practices well into the industrial revolution hundreds of years later.3 Literacy, already on the rise in the late Middle Ages in Europe, and integral to certain communities in Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, and Northern Africa, would be fostered by increased availability of printed texts.4 Controversies would arise as debates about access to religious texts, in particular, would split along fault lines of belief. -

Tribes, clans, countries and other groups that have wealth have the power to wage and win wars. Those without wealth will always be war’s victims. They lack the resources to build effective defences and protect themselves against destructive powers. Besides extermination or assimilation, one consequence of wars for the vanquished is displacement. Defeated peoples are often set adrift. Cultures, or societies, come into existence when a sufficient number of individuals agree on a way of living together, either through consensus or through force. Cultures are sensitive organisms. They are born, sometimes growing and flourishing, oftentimes contracting and vanishing. Even the most powerful civilizations in their times have had to relinquish their positions of dominance, most often because of self destructive actions taken by their leaders. When one culture is diminished, there is always another waiting to take its place. Humankind is the sum total of all those cultures that have gone before. Religion is the codification of a society’s rules that define what is considered right and what is deemed wrong. Societies base their laws on these definitions, and the laws establish the worldly consequences of not upholding or abiding by the rules. Those who are the codifiers, the priests, gain their legitimacy by providing answers to the unanswerable. -

I). The monumental palace stretches for eighty ,five metres along the Western flank of the piazza from the Southern corner coward the Northern end. The exceptionally long fapde is organised into a symmetrical sequence of bays with a projecting central section and is buttressed, at the North end, by a distinct fapde with a large serliana win, dow (an arch with crabeaced sides). The exterior boasts a profusion of ornament that enlivens the surface and punctuates the horizontality of the building. Through sheer scale and abundance of form, the Palazzo Pamphilj bespeaks grandeur and authority. Architecture serves the rhetorical functions of communication and persuasion. In the early modem period (ca. 1500-1800), palaces in particular became synonymous with the statm of their owners. Today, the Palazzo Pamphilj houses the Embassy of Brazil in Rome, but until the government ofBrazil purchased the palace in 1960, it had belonged to the Pamphilj family. -

The Corsini Family Members of the Corsini family settled in Florence in the middle of the 13th century, attaining leading roles in government, the law, trade and banking. During that time, the Republic of Florence became one of the mercantile and financial centres in the Western world. Along with other leading families, the Corsini name was interwoven with that of the powerful Medici until 1737, when the Medici line came to an end. The Corsini family can also claim illustrious members within the Catholic Church, including their family saint, Andrea Corsini, three cardinals and Pope Clement XII. Filippo Corsini was created Count Palatine in 1371 by the Emperor Charles IV, and in 1348 Tommaso Corsini encouraged the foundation of the Studio Fiorentino, the University of Florence. The family’s history is interwoven with that of the city and its citizens‚ politically, culturally and intellectually. Between 1650 and 1728, the family constructed what is the principal baroque edifice in the city, and their remarkable collection of Renaissance and Baroque art remains on display in Palazzo Corsini today. The Corsini Collection: A Window on Renaissance Florence paints a rare glimpse of family life and loyalties, their devotion to the city, and their place within Florence’s magnificent cultural heritage. Humanists and Europe Printers: new cultural actors in Europe beginning in the late fifteenth century Catherine KIKUCHI ABSTRACT Printing was born in Germany with the production of the Gutenberg Bible, although printers set up shop across all of Europe beginning in the first decades of the century. They specialized, organized, and collaborated with merchants and bookshops. This new industry was particularly concentrated in merchant cities and university towns. Their editorial strategies sought to reach an increasingly broader audience which was not limited to persons of letters, although important printers worked with the Humanists for the diffusion of high quality revised editions. Their collaboration involved ancient texts, such as the Greek editions of Aldus Manutius, as well as religious texts, the Bible in particular. Printing was thus a driver of religious and intellectual renewal, but was also suspected of conveying harmful and heretical ideas; with the Reformation and Counter-Reformation, printers were increasingly controlled by political and religious authorities, a control that some of them were able to circumvent. The invention and diffusion of printing The birth of printing in Europe is dated as 1452, when Johann Gutenberg produced the 42-line Bible in Mainz with the help of Peter Schöffer and funding from Johann Fust. This invention takes its place in the long-term history of technology, stretching from Chinese and Korean printing methods to engraved Bibles for the poor in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The true change with Gutenberg was not so much the press itself, but the use of movable type. Furthermore, the success of printing was also due to its connection with important merchants who invested in this new art, such as Johann Fust. -

1 Translation as Editorial Mediation: Charles Estienne’s Experiments with the Dissemination of Knowledge Hélène Cazes, University of Victoria Charles Estienne (1504-64) is often presented as the son, brother, or uncle of better- known members of his family, all printers of renown. Most of the Estiennes are well known for their contribution to philology and their erudite editions; in the Estienne lansdacape made of ‘editiones principes’ and learned dictionaries, Charles, in contrast, appears as the man of ‘second’ editions, translations, vulgarizations. He is also remembered as the bankrupt of the family. Yet, he may well be the Estienne who is the closest to our modern editing ventures: by including his readership in the conception of his catalogue, by adapting existing works to a public he hopes to be larger and larger, by addressing French-reading only audiences and young students, Charles Estienne questions the boundaries of edition and blurs its boundaries with communication and translation. This paper proposes a new appraisal of his work as an editor and as a mediator of Renaissance culture, both Classical and contemporary. The second son of Henri Estienne (the Elder), he worked as a printer in Paris for a brief decade between 1552 and 1564, not by choice but by circumstance, after completing a degree in medicine in 1540, publishing a treatise on human dissection in 1545-1546, writing several books for young people between 1535 and 1550, and composing 2 translations from Latin and Italian.1 A family member of secondary importance, surrounded by the figures of the Estienne dynasty of humanist editor-printers, he became the head of the printing house when his brother Robert left for Geneva. -

Chapel Hill 2009 Approved by: Tim Carter, chair Annegret Fauser Anne MacNeil John Nádas Jocelyn Neal © 2009 Virginia Christy Lamothe ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii Abstract Virginia Christy Lamothe: “The Theater of Piety: Sacred Operas for the Barberini Family (Rome, 1632-1643)” (Under the direction of Tim Carter) In a time of religious war, plague, and reformation, Pope Urban VIII and his cardinal- nephews Antonio and Francesco Barberini sought to establish the authority of the Catholic Church by inspiring audiences of Rome with visions of the heroic deeds of saints. One way in which they did this was by commissioning operas based on the lives of saints from the poet Giulio Rospigliosi (later Pope Clement IX), and papal musicians Stefano Landi and Virgilio Mazzocchi. Aside from the merit of providing an in-depth look at four of these little-known works, Sant’Alessio (1632, 1634), Santi Didimo e Teodora (1635), San Bonifatio (1638), and Sant’Eustachio (1643), this dissertation also discusses how these operas reveal changing ideas of faith, civic pride, death and salvation, education, and the role of women during the first half of the seventeenth century. The analysis of the music and the drama stems from studies of the surviving manuscript scores, libretti, payment records and letters about the first performances.
