The new school law, made it possible to teach subject matter in a second or foreign language. E.g. Vasa ovningsskola started as early as 1991 different English medium programmes at the comprehensive school level. This made the need for teacher education in bilingual education and content-based language teaching but too apparent. Therefore the Department of Teacher Education at Abo Akademi University has provided pre-service courses in content-based language teaching since 1995 and in-service education and research in the field has recently started. This report is but a small step towards the development of research- driven information about content and language integrated learning in the Abo Akademi context. The report is mainly intended for student teachers and practising teachers as an introduction to content-based language teaching. The report is divided into three parts. The first part, called Bilingual education in theory and practice, provides the reader with an overview of the theoretical justification for bilingual education and content-based language teaching, presents the development of the optional courses in content-based language teaching offered at the Department of Teacher Education, and finally, describes the English medium programmes developed at Vasa ovningsskola. Part one starts with two articles by Kaj lm. In the first article he attempts to give an overview of the major features of bilingual education or content-based language instruction and presents the theoretical justification for introducing these kind of programmes. In the second article, Sjoho lm provides the reader with a brief overview of the development of English medium content teaching in teacher

Public and private transportation vehicles, and public places are potential environments for mobile television services. Even in homes, mobile television handsets are interesting, both as a personal Mobile television - technology and user experiences. Report on the ... television set and as a tool for establishing closer interaction with the television programs. This publication presents results about people´s real interest in mobile television. The results come from interviewing a large number of persons and from building and trialing a prototype system. A total of 293 people took part in the interviews and the trial. The trial system combined several types of wireless networks in a 4G fashion. It took digital terrestrial television broadcasts from the air and delivered them over the Internet to mobile terminals in hot-spot areas covered by Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN). Two kinds of terminals were used - a pocket-sized PDA and an A5- sized tablet PC. In the field trial the user could watch almost the entire program content of the three leading Finnish TV channels. The user was also able to access all programs transmitted during the previous week from the media server (TV-Anytime feature). This publication is intended for producers and distributors of television content, as well as for people in the handset device industry; it is also useful for students and people who are generally interested in the future of television. The publication starts with a review of television usage patterns and early experiences of digital television and mobile television trials around the world.

However, the Finnish television environment was also shaped in many ways by contacts with socialist television cultures. This article analyses the first volume of the television magazine Katso to trace the various transnational relations, which shaped the early Finnish television environment and to discuss the cultural meanings of socialist television in this environment. Nearly every issue of Katso in 1960 discusses television in a transnational context. Transnational themes fall into four categories: (1) learning about television in other countries; (2) the Eurovision and Nordvision networks; (3) watching television across national borders (Swedish and Tallinn television but also television across surprising distances); and (4) visions of world television.

Nykypäivän provokatiivinen televisio- tuotanto mediateollisuuden muotona Nykypäivän provokatiiviset televisiotuotannot pyrkivät shokeeraamaan ja härnäämään katsojan television ääreen. Erilaiset tosi-tv-pohjaiset ohjelmat ovat usein jollakin muotoa yleisiä arvoja, normeja ja jopa moraalikäsityksiä raviste- levia. Artikkeli keskittyy näihin sisältöihin ja esittelee yleisimmät provokatiivi- suuden tendenssit, kunkin kategorian ominaispiirteet sekä toistuvat konventiot, joiden varaan ohjelmat rakentuvat. Johdanto Viihteellistyminen sekä faktan ja fiktion rajojen hämärtyminen leimaavat nykytelevisiota. Tv-viihteen voi nähdä yhdistyvän tunteisiin ja tietynlaisen tunnetilan saavuttamiseen, kuten mielihyvään, jännitykseen ja rentoutukseen. Nykyistä mediamaisemaa luonnehtii affektiivisuus: se on tulvillaan media- sisältöjä, jotka provosoivat ja synnyttävät tunteita. (Arjoranta et al. 2017, 76.) Myös nykypäivän televisiotarjonta ja ohjelmasisällöt tuntuvat pyrkivän kerta toisensa jälkeen shokeeraamaan ja härnäämään katsojan televisioruudun ää- reen. Tätä ilmiötä kuvaamaan olen kehittänyt uuden termin provokatiivinen televisiotuotanto, joka yksinkertaisimmillaan tarkoittaa tv-sisältöjä, jotka ovat jollakin muotoa yleisiä arvoja, normeja ja jopa moraalikäsityksiä ravistelevia (Tuomi 2018a, 150–151).     Finnish Center Association FCA News FOR MEMBERS OF THE FINNISH CENTER ASSOCIATION September 2020 CHAIRMAN’S CORNER I have been quite busy with things while we have been closed. First, we had to decide about the rentals. How to handle them and keep people safe. I am happy we didn’t have to make that decision because each rental made it for us and everyone who didn’t have their event was very nice and left with good feelings. I am sure they will be back at another better time. Another problem was how to handle our events without endangering anyone. This was so hard because we all want to be together. I know everything will get better; we will go on but that will depend on your support. This is a special place. We Finns are proud of our heritage. We are proud to say our families came from Fin- land and to tell people a little about Finland. And isn’t it fun when someone pronounces “sauna”? I love to tell people how to say it properly. On a positive side we have now got an online site for the gift shop. This has been talked about for a long time. It is exciting to be able to order and pick up or even have it sent to you. I invite you to use it. Every little bit helps your Finnish Center. Lastly, I want to thank some people who have helped a lot through this time.     Finland In Horace Newcomb (ed.), Encyclopedia of Television, 2nd ed., New York & London: Fitzroy Dearborn Publishers (in cooperation with Museum of Broadcast Communications), 2004, 877•880. In terms of television, Finland belongs to the Scandinavian and North European pattern, with a strong public service system coexisting with commercial channels. However, the Finnish television system also offers some distinctive characteristics: an unusual combination of public and private systems; a radical view of the role of broadcasting in society; and the unique influence of television across the Cold•War border between Finland and Estonia. The first regular television transmissions seen in Finland came from the Soviet Union, extended to the Estonian capital Tallinn in 1954, just 40 miles south of Finland’s capital Helsinki, across the Baltic Sea. The Leningrad transmitter reached Finnish communities behind the border in the south•eastern part of the country. The spillover signal encouraged Finns to buy receivers and put out antennas using the standards applied in the Soviet Union. This happened at a time when little progress was being made regarding the establishment of national television in Finland. Beginning in the late 1940s, some experimental initiatives with the new medium had taken place in technical circles under the auspices of the state•dominated public service broadcasting corporation YLE. But the Parliament•controlled management of YLE was reluctant to take rapid steps while its political attention and financial resources were occupied by an ambitious project to cover the wide but sparsely populated country with an FM radio network (among the first in the world). Proposals to use advertising as an additional income for the new medium were dismissed by most politicians, either because of concerns that this would reduce advertising revenues for the printed press, or due to the principle that public broadcasting should remain free from commercialism.
