WEST HADDON EMERGENCY PLANNING – PART 1

Earlier this year the Executive Officer asked the Parish Council to consider establishing an emergency plan for West Haddon.

Little did the Council appreciate that less than 2 months later a public health emergency would impact not just West Haddon but, indeed, the country and world and, as a result, face to face meetings were postponed in favour of online meetings. We are now conversant with online meetings and able to continue business from the comfort of our own homes which should, hopefully, allow for increased engagement from our community members.

As we now find ourselves fast approaching the winter and potentially the impact of more frequent extremes of weather, as well as continuing to battle the invisible enemy known so well to us all now as Covid 19, it is more evident than ever that the Council and West Haddon must ensure it is as resilient as it can be for future situations.

An emergency can include fire; traffic accident; act of terrorism; medical emergency; strike; utility failure; contamination; flood; extreme weather, the list goes on and on.

Obviously, there are agencies that deal with certain emergencies e.g. police, fire, ambulance who should always be the first contact for action and advice as required.

For further information on protecting yourself, your children, pets, homes, businesses and community please visit:- www..gov.uk/councilservcies/fire-safety-and-emergencies/emergency- prevention-and-advice/Pages/prtoecting-your-community.aspx.

As a community we can also help ourselves and become more resilient in these times when emergency services are becoming more and more stretched to assist the national effort in tackling the public health emergency so, with this in mind, as Executive Officer to the Council, I am asking for your support by asking if you would be interested and willing to join a West Haddon Emergency & Resilience Team with the objective of • identifying risks to our community • response and actions • resources within the West Haddon community available and willing to assist during an emergency • identifying vulnerable people in the West Haddon community • understanding how to activate a plan if and when required. Haddon Cricket Club - Well what a season!

Who was to know at the end of last season what was to lay in store for us all…

The merging of two old and established clubs to form one entity to compete with the big town clubs was agreed, everyone was excited about the 2020 season and then…Covid-19 happened. To say it has had an impact on us would be somewhat of an understatement! Our finances have been decimated but our exploits on the field have been amazing! Considering we thought we would never play cricket at all this year, a late start to the season with a new format, allowed us to hear leather on willow right through until mid-September and the results were absolutely brilliant. It is only right to thank all our members and players for their extraordinary efforts to get the games on and integrate the two playing groups from the very young to the…… very, very old!

The efforts of the youth coaches were really extraordinary. The work involved to get everything Covid secure (I still have nightmares about those words! ☺) was incredible. To then adapt to the ever-changing rules and to safely expand the training sessions and games was nothing short of miraculous. An enormous thank you to all the parents who helped us to put these sessions on. For their understanding of the difficulties and their never-ending support. The youth section goes from strength to strength even through these extraordinary times. Well done Jim, Neil, Phil, Ian, Luke, Lovey and all the helpers. If you have a child who would like to enrol for next season, I can promise you a very warm welcome to a youth set up that truly is second to none.

The adult sides had to deal with all the same problems as the youth coaches combined with dealing with the opposition, to ensure the entire track and trace information was recorded should a player develop symptoms following a game. We had two situations during the season, but thankfully both were tested negative and apart from a sleepless night or two everyone survived intact!

The teams did brilliantly on the field. All three Saturday league teams reached the play offs with the 1st team falling at the quarter finals, the 3rds reaching the semis and the 2nds reaching the final. Well done to all the teams and captains. They had to deal with the players meeting for the first time in many cases and then integrating the squads was no mean feat. Add Coronavirus protocols to this and you have a challenging year! They took it in their stride however, as the results prove. Chris, Higgsy, Jon and Neil, thank you! The combination of our playing squads for the Wednesday twenty/20 league was even better! Unbeaten for the season, finishing top of the league was an outstanding achievement! Well done Lovey for organising this with a broken arm to boot! Ably assisted by Neil who stood in for the injured one!

We realise that this year has been a challenge but compared to some it has really been quite ordinary. Our circumstances compared to our members who are NHS workers and members of the police, are quite simply irrelevant in comparison and we thank you all for your tremendous efforts and sacrifices.

It would have been great to be able to open our clubhouse safely, but it was not to be. This has resulted in the club finances taking a very substantial hit. Let’s hope we can operate freely next season in an attempt to establish a solid financial base for us to further expand our club and facilities to reward the efforts and results of our contribution to the village and our players young, and old!

In closing, on behalf of the club, I would like to extend sincere thanks to all the players, parents, and members who have supported us and kept our dream alive. We are committed to providing opportunities to all of our players young and old (but mostly young!) to enable them to fulfil their ambitions and to provide a hub for the village to enable this great sport to thrive in the community.

If you would like to join us please contact us, you will be made very welcome

WHPhoto.club – September's Theme - Less is More

Even though the WHPC hadn't met for only one month due to the summer break, it seemed we'd been away longer, and it was great to meet up for September's meeting, albeit only via Zoom.

Our theme of 'Less is More' was proposed to encourage minimalist images - pared back to emphasise the subject by removing unnecessary objects from the scene and the use of negative space. By reducing visual clutter (less) you add impact (more). As usual members provided us with photos with much more left-field interpretations; less as in (the) few (a Spitfire) and an exhausted Civil War re-enactor - phew!

From the excellent images the members had to choose from they voted two as their joint favourites: Blue Eye by David Kallmeier (below, left) and World of Their Own by Adrian Chandler (below, right).

The Image of the Month category allows members to submit photos of anything they like, as long as it was taken in the last month. There's always a degree of anticipation to see what will be submitted and we were treated to a good variety of subjects: babies, birds and bathing pools, amongst others. The photo that received the most votes was Tony Teague's Fag Break (right), an atmospheric study of someone lighting a cigarette.

All the photos submitted this month can be seen on the gallery page of our website. http://whphoto.club/
