The Knightley INTRODUCTION Parishes This booklet has been produced by the Knightley Benefice to mark the anniversary of the start of the First World War on 4th. August 1914, and accompanies the August 2014 edition of the benefice magazine "The Link". There are War Memorials in four of the five villages. That in Badby is a memorial inside the church, in Newnham there is a free standing memorial cross on the To mark the village green outside the church, and in Preston Capes there is a memorial cross in the churchyard. The Charwelton and Fawsley memorial is a joint one being a 100th. Anniversary of the memorial cross in Charwelton village adjacent to the packhorse bridge. The booklet records the names of all those from the five villages who fell in WW1 and whose names are recorded on those War Memorials in each village - 17 from Badby, 14 from Newnham, 5 from Preston Capes and 2 from Charwelton. A few outbreak of entries relate to men who died subsequent to the war but as their names appear on the memorials their details are also included here. Each entry gives the name, and some brief details of service history, together with some notes on family and local connections. I am very grateful to the following the First World War people who have provided details, often after considerable research. Entered theatre 1 March 1915 Grave or Killed: Died of wounds 3 July 1916 No. 2 Stationary Hospital Abbeville aged 32 Memorial: Grave or Notes: 1901 in Badby aged 7. 1911 farm labourer living with sister Elizabeth, Memorial: brothers Arthur & Harold (see below) and nephews Eric Hickman & David Notes: A farming family who lived at Barehill Farm Ballard. Harold HICKMAN Peter BULL Born: Badby 1899 son of Thomas & Emily Hickman Born: Badby 1885 Served: 19th. Btn. Northumberland Fusiliers (Tynemouth Pioneers). Served: 32 Btn. Royal Fusiliers Killed: Flanders 22 August 1918 aged 19 Killed: in action 4 February 1917 Grave: Godeswaersvelde British Cemetery Nord. Grave: Klein-Vierstraat British Cemetery Notes: 1901 Badby aged 3 1911 at school. Living with other family members as above. Notes: He had 5 brothers and 4 sisters. Worked as a farm labourer and carter and later an estate gardener. In 1911 he married Elsie May Parsons and had two daughters. Arthur HODGINS Served in 32nd (Service) Battalion (East Ham) of the Royal Fusiliers. Born: 1916 - The Battle of Flers-Courcelette, followed by the Battle of the Transloy Served: Ridges. Killed in action on 4th February 1917. Killed: Grave or William Frederick DAVIS Memorial: Born: 1897 Priors Marston to Charles and Rose David Notes: Served: 7th. Btn. Northamptonshire Regt. -"The Mobbs Corps". Entered theatre 26 July 1915 Rixon IZZARD Killed: 31 July 1917 at Passchendaele Born: 1895 in Daventry Memorial: Menin Gate Served: 1st. Btn. Royal Bedfordshire Regt. No. 9775 Notes: Previously wounded July 1916, returning to France May 1917. Killed: in action at second battle of Ypres 29 June 1915 aged 19 His father (Charles) was a foreman plate layer for the GCR. On 10 June 1904 Memorial: Menin Gate, Ypres - panel 31 and 33 his father was killed in Catesby tunnel when he was hit by a train. Rose was 3 Notes: He was adopted by George and Annie Hutt of Badby, who also had Dora, Alice months pregnant at the time and was unable to cope with 4 children. SE 14769 Served: Killed: 21 June 1918 Salonika aged 44 Killed: Memorial: Salonika Military Cemetery Grave or Notes: 1881 in Badby. 1891 groom in West Haddon. 1901 in Daventry with wife Memorial: Victoria Gertrude. 1911 with Victoria, Ivy (9), Violet (8), & George in Rugby. Notes: Drayman. John Frederick PHIPPS NEWNHAM Born: Served: 7th. Btn. Northamptonshire Regt. - the "Mobbs Corps" Pte. 18665 Osbert ABEL Killed: Born: Christened Newnham 24 Aug 1893. Son of Henry (wheelwright) & Lucy Clara Grave or See Preston Capes entry Served: 3rd Btn. Northamptonshire Regt. - Private 32111 signed up 12 Jan 1917 Memorial: Killed: 9th March 1918. Notes: This is another man (see Philip Knight above) whose name appears on this Grave or memorial but who does not appear to have lived in Badby. Memorial: Notes: 1901 with parents in Newnham. 1911 Occupation was butcher and farm labourer. Married Emma Emery 15th March 1917. Probate effects £123.7s to Harry SHAW widow. Killed: Flanders July 1918 Sidney George BAND Grave or Born: 1898 son of William Walker (highway surveyor) and Laura Emily Wady Memorial: Served: Machine Gun Corps Northamptonshire Yeomanry Private 85652 Notes: Married Clara Ethel Cox 1907 and had at least 4 children - possibly one Died: 2nd September 1925 due to the effects of being gassed during the war. posthumously. Household Cavalry & Cavalry of Killed: in action 14th Mar 1918 the Line (including Yeomanry & Imperial Camel Corps) Grave: La Clytte Military Cemetery, Belgium Died: 20th June 1917. Notes: 1891 with parents in Daventry. 1901 with parents in Newnham. 1915 Grave: Buried Newnham Churchyard. The large memorial grave married Caroline G Clements in Northampton. She later became Countess of Breadalbane & Holland on her subsequent marriage to Lt Col Charles William Campbell 9th Earl of Breadalbane & Holland. Lancaster. Educated Killed: in action 15th April 1918 aged 39 at Eton, & the Royal Military College, Sandhurst: gazetted 2 nd Lieut 14th (Kings) Grave: Ypres Reservoir Cemetery, Belgium Hussars Feb 1908; served in India as ADC to the Hon Sir Arthur Lawley, when Notes: 1881 & 1891 & 1901 with parents in Newnham 1911 with wife Ellen (Jeffs) in governor of Madras, and afterwards to the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Newnham.
