As many of you know, TAMUN'16 was a great success for which we worked very hard and we intend to make TAMUN'17 even better. With participants from all over Turkey, we expect to provide you with more in depth debates, more culturally diverse discussions and an even deeper sense of satisfaction on the outcome. We invite you to enjoy Antalya's hospitality, our conference venue and our school campus along with the energy and motivation of our TAMUN'17 Executive Board. We are eager to make the conference a huge success. Our main aim is to raise awareness among high school students on the tough problems the world faces today and to use diplomacy to shape the solutions. The MUN experience will provide the basis for our Future Leaders, something we as TAMUN want to be a part of. The TAMUN'16’s theme was “The consensus for the new generation”, TAMUN'17’s theme will be “Designing our Future”. Foreseeing where we are headed and the (irreversible) damage we are causing, it is time to take precautions now! We will have five General Assembly committees, an ECOSOC committee, a Historical Committee, and a Security Council. Please bear in mind that only experienced delegates should attend the Historical Committee and the Security Council, since their formats are very different from General Assembly committees and students should be very familiar with the procedures of GA committees first. -

Article Khoisan Identity: A Contribution towards Reconciliation in Post-Apartheid South Africa John Stephanus Klaasen University of the Western Cape [email protected] Abstract This article seeks to explore the identity of the Khoisan as symbolic for reconciliation in South Africa. What contributions can the narrative of a marginalised people such as the Khoisan make to reconciling a divided nation such as South Africa? The Khoisan have been victims of continuous dispossession since the arrival of Bartholomew Diaz at the Cape in 1488. However, it was the taking of land in 1657 from the Khoisan for the free burgers that marked a significant period for the current discourse on land and for identity and reconciliation within post-apartheid South Africa. Notwithstanding the attempts by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) to use narratives for healing, restoration, and continuing engagement with the meta-narratives of the past, my own use of narrative is open-ended with space for dialogue through interaction. The past or history does not have fixed boundaries, but rather blurred boundaries that function as spaces of transcendence. The narrative approach has four interactionist variables which are personhood, communication, power as reflected experience, and fluid community. I point out weaknesses of the use of narrative by the TRC as well as the interaction between experience and theory by practical theologians to construct an open-ended narrative of the Khoisan for reconciliation in South Africa. Manausa Junior Fellow, Institute for Human Rights, Peace and Development 1 Abstract South Africa inherited a complex cultural mosaic largely conditioned by economic deprivation and racism. This paper provides the contextual background of some of the principle features of the serial regimes of racial supremacy and expropriation. However, at the heart of this historic context is the position of one of the oldest nations on Earth, and the original proprietors of southern Africa: the First Nation Khoi Khoi. What makes them distinctive is that they were the first resistors to exploitation and racial supremacy, and they maintained that struggle from the 1600’s to the present day. The paper presents the context in which the Khoi were expropriated, both materially and sexually, to the extent that a sub-race of the Khoi were created with an imposed identity of “Cape Coloured”. The paper traces the Khoi’s political struggle, its resistance to racial supremacy, and its demand for a social-democratic dispensation. The Khoi articulated the first idea of an African peoples’ organization representing all the dispossessed peoples of South Africa. They merged with the first real social-democratic movement, the Non-European Unity Movement. They also merged with a 10-Point social-democratic plan for economic justice in South Africa. Their struggle was met with a fierce imposition of radical racial apartheid and exploitation, which they resisted. -

In South Africa, it was a philosophy and a way of life of blacks. It was an African cultural trait that rallied individuals to become communal in outlook and thereby to look out for each other. Although botho or ubuntu concept became popularised only after the dawn of democracy in South Africa, the concept itself has been lived out by Africans for over a millennia. Colonialism, slavery and apartheid introduced materialism and individualism that denigrated the black identity and dignity. The Black Consciousness philosophy and Black Theology worked hand in hand since the middle of the nine- teen sixties to restore the human dignity of black people in South Africa. INTRODUCTION The contributions of Black Consciousness (BC) and Black Theology (BT) in the promotion and protection of botho/ubuntu values and principles are discussed in this article. The arrival of white people in South Africa has resulted in black people being subjected to historical injustices, cultural domination, religious vilification et cetera. BC and BT played an important role in identifying and analysing the problems that plagued blacks as a group in South Africa among the youth of the nineteen sixties that resulted in the unbanning of political organisations, release of political prisoners, the return of exiles and ultimately the inception of democracy. -

Voicing on the fringe: towards an analysis of ‘quirkyʼ phonology in Ju and beyond Lee J. Pratchett Abstract The binary voice contrast is a productive feature of the sound systems of Khoisan languages but is especially pervasive in Ju (Kx’a) and Taa (Tuu) in which it yields phonologically contrastive segments with phonetically complex gestures like click clusters. This paper investigates further the stability of these ‘quirky’ segments in the Ju language complex in light of new data from under-documented varieties spoken in Botswana that demonstrate an almost systematic devoicing of such segments, pointing to a sound change in progress in varieties that one might least expect. After outlining a multi-causal explanation of this phenomenon, the investigation shifts to a diachronic enquiry. In the spirit of Anthony Traill (2001), using the most recent knowledge on Khoisan languages, this paper seeks to unveil more on language history in the Kalahari Basin Area from these typologically and areally unique sounds. Keywords: Khoisan, historical linguistics, phonology, Ju, typology (AFRICaNa LINGUISTICa 24 (2018 100 Introduction A phonological voice distinction is common to more than two thirds of the world’s languages: whilst largely ubiquitous in African languages, a voice contrast is almost completely absent in the languages of Australia (Maddison 2013). The particularly pervasive voice dimension in Khoisan1 languages is especially interesting for two reasons. Firstly, the feature is productive even with articulatory complex combinations of clicks and other ejective consonants, gestures that, from a typological perspective, are incompatible with the realisation of voicing. Secondly, these phonological contrasts are robustly found in only two unrelated languages, Taa (Tuu) and Ju (Kx’a) (for a classification see Güldemann 2014). -

B.A. GEORGIA STATE UNIVERSITY, 1994 ARCHITECTURAL RETENTION AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF MODERN AFRICAN DESIGN IN THE WORKS OF ARCHITECT DEMAS NWOKO, Major Advisor: Dr. Daniel Black Thesis dated May 2007 The purpose of this research was to examine elements of traditional African architecturai design in fhe works of Demas Nwoko. These elements remain aesthetically - and functionally valuable; hence, their inclusion in the development of modern African residential architecture. The research simultaneously explores the methodology Nwoko has created to apply his theory of comfort design in architecture, as well as the impact of traditional Afi-ican culture and European culture on modem African residential design. The methodology used is visual analysis, as several of Nwoko's buildings were visited, photographed and analyzed for the application of his design ideology of New Culture. The three elements of design examined are his approach to space design that supports lifestyle and achieves comfort; artistic application that reflects African aesthetic values in color, motif and design patterns; and his use of building materials, that not only provide comfortable interiors in a tropical climate, but are affordable and durable. The research concludes with recommendations and contributions to the discourse on modern Afiican design and offers the findings for fwther research and development of African and Diaspora communities. The findings expose the intrinsic value of culture and architectural retention in the evolution of modem architecture in Africa and the Diaspora. Ralph Glücksmann Apartheid Legislation in South Africa I. Introduction On 31 May 1910 the Union of South Africa was formed as a dominion in the British Empire. It was exactly eight years after the signing of the Treaty of Vereeniging, which had brought the Second Anglo-Boer War to an end and stipulated full British sovereignty over the Boer republics of Transvaal and Orange Free State. Although the South Africa Act 1909 (9 Edw. VII c. 9) was passed by the British Parliament at Westminster, it was wholly constructed by South African representatives in South Africa. Agreement had not been reached without acrimony, and there were times when it seemed that the national convention of representatives of the four colonies Cape, Natal, Transvaal and Orange River might break up among recriminations. The Kx'a Family
Journal of Asian and African Studies, No., Article The Kx’a Family A New Khoisan Genealogy1) Heine, Bernd (Institut für Afrikanistik Universität zu Köln) Honken, Henry (Independent Scholar) e question of whether there is a genetic unit called “Khoisan”, as proposed by Greenberg (1963), or whether there are a number of independent genetic stocks of languages within the “Khoisan” area has been discussed controver- sially in the history of Khoisan linguistics, with the second position now being prevalent. In the present study it is argued that there is a genetic unit that includes languages that are traditionally associated with both the Northern and the Southern Khoisan groupings, the languages included being !Xun (or “Ju” or “Ju|hoan”) and Hoan. Abstract Since the transition from apartheid, there has been much discussion of the possibilities for the emergence of a truly ‘national’ literature in South Africa. This thesis joins the debate by arguing that Black Consciousness, a movement that began in the late 1960s, provided the intellectual framework both for understanding how a national culture would develop and for recognising it when it emerged. Black Consciousness posited a South Africa where formerly competing cultures sat comfortably together. This thesis explores whether such cultural equality has been achieved. Does contemporary literature harmoniously deploy different cultural idioms simultaneously? By analysing Black writing, mainly poetry, from the 1970s through to the present, the study traces the stages of development preceding the emergence of a possible ‘national’ literature and argues that the dominant art versus politics binary needs to be reconsidered. -

This crisis is due to two factors. First of all, there is a new dispensation where Afrikaners are a minority group. They feel alienated, even frustrated and confused. Secondly, their identity has been challenged and some would say defeated. What is their role and new identity in the current SA? They fought a war and participated internally in operations within a specific local, regional and global context. This identity was formed through their own particular history as well as certain theological and ideological worldviews and frameworks.
