JEFFERSON PARISH SHERIFF’SWEEKLYJOURNAL Sheriff Newell Normand June 29 - July 5, 2012 sheriff takes a stand Special Olympics deserves our support, applause THERE ARE SO MANY WONDERFUL non- profit causes in South Louisiana that admirably serve our community and benefit those in need. I wish I could do more for each of them. But there is a special place in my heart for Louisiana’s Special Olympics. After you have watched 700 boys and girls vastly exceed their handicaps at a Special Olympics event, your view of the world is never quite the same. I am especially pleased that so many of my col- leagues at the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office share my feelings about Special Olympics. It is remarkable indeed that 24 members of the JPSO SWAT Team volunteered to participate in an eight-mile run to carry the Special Olympics torch. This was not something that was required of Among the members of the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team who ran in the Louisiana Special Olympics torch run are, bottom row from them. Participating in the run with officers from 20 left, Sean Cursain, Trent Weidert, Manuel Estrada, Louis Frost Jr., Benny Griffin and Chris Cade; and, top row, Anthony Buttone, Johnny Heck, other law enforcement organizations was something Keith Champagne, Richard Cross, Wayne Rumore, Paul Smith, Mary Layrisson, Michael Olivier, Scott Wildey, David Roddy and Donald Peterson. they wanted to do. I know they felt really good about their role in carrying the torch when motorists and pedestrians stopped to applaud them on their route from Zephyr Stadium to the Kenner 24 JPSO SWAT Team members carry Police Department administration building. Later this year, we will join hands with Special the torch for Louisiana Special Olympics Olympics again when the JPSO hosts a Special Olympics fundraiser that we call “Over the Edge.” A group of major contributors to Special Olympics TWENTY-FOUR MEMBERS of the Jefferson Parish Police Department administration building. will be invited to join our JPSO SWAT team in Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team joined colleagues from 20 All along the route, motorists and pedestrians repelling down the Benson Tower in Downtown other law enforcement agencies to carry an Olympic stopped to applaud when they saw the torch and the New Orleans.
