Italian Books I Philobiblon Rome London New York In collaboration with Govi Rare Books, New York Italian Books I Spring 2019 Preface We are very pleased to present Philobiblon’s new publishing initiative Italian Books, a series of numbered catalogues devoted to the important place of Italian culture on the world stage. The catalogues will feature manuscripts, documents, printed books, engravings, drawings, and artist’s books produced in Italy, as well as Italian books printed outside the country, translations attesting to the impact of Italian culture abroad, including volumes finely bound by sought-after Italian binders, and those once owned by great protagonists of Italian book collecting. Together these selections will illuminate a journey into the multifarious Italian book world in the broadest and richest sense. After all, the history of the book itself is a fascinating narrative, an uninterrupted medley of fruitful cultural transfers and the migration of ideas. In this regard, Italy has always represented a unique crossroad among cultures, the custodian of ancient past, as well as the gateway between Western and Eastern worlds, whose academies, art collections, libraries, printing houses, and bookshops have provided, over the centuries, fertile meeting grounds for generations of scholars, bibliophiles, and connoisseurs. In the first decades of the twentieth century, two international exhibitions paid homage to the Italian book. The Mostra Storica dell’Arte della Stampa in Italia opened in Leipzig in 1914 and presented the magnificence of Italian book production from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century. The splendid Exposition du Livre Italien followed in Paris in 1926, mounted at the Bibliothèque Nationale and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. -

American Dante Bibliography for 1981 ANTHONY L. PELLEGRINI [Originally published in Dante Studies, vol. 100 (1982)] This bibliography is intended to include the Dante translations published in this country in 1981 and all Dante studies and reviews published in 1981 that are in any sense American. The latter criterion is construed to include foreign reviews of American publications pertaining to Dante. The listing of reviews in general is selective, particularly in the case of studies bearing only peripherally on Dante. As a rule, items cited from Dissertation Abstracts International are registered without further abstracting, since the titles tend to be self-explanatory. Items not recorded in the bibliographies for previous years are entered as addenda to the present list. NOTE. Generally, the citation of an individual study from a collected volume representing several authors is given in brief, while the main entry of the volume is listed with full bibliographical data in its alphabetical order. Issues of this journal under the former title of Annual Report of the Dante Society continue to be cited in the short form of Report, with volume number. Translations The Divine Comedy. [1981] According to his preface, "On Translating Dante" (pp. 35-43), the translator takes as his purpose "to convey Dante's meaning into English," and so forgoes the distorting use of rhyme and even takes liberties with the verse-length, varying it between thirteen syllables and nine, but observing the tercet division. -

This thesis traces the extent of the influence of Dante on Beckett, and interprets Beckett in the light of that influence. Dante figures in Beckett^ two major critical works, "Dante... Bruno. Vico.. Joyce" and Proust. In the essay on Joyce Beckett gives his own definitions of the three post-mortal states. In the essay on Proust, Beckett defines the artistic process as a descent toward the essence. The early fiction and poetry is distinct from the later works in that the allusions to Dante are more frequent and more obvious. The anti-hero of More Pricks than Kicks is Belacqua Shuah. -
English-Speaking Modernism: Ezra Pound, in 1910, Celebrates the Advent of What He Calls ‘The Master’; W.B

Bec1ett, Dante and the Archive DANELA CASELL BECKETT, DANTE AND T7E ARC740E Dante is ubiQuitous in English-speaking modernism: Ezra Pound, in 1910, celebrates the advent of what he calls ‘the master’; W.B. Yeats regards him as the only poet able to achieve ‘unity of being’; T.S. Eliot, called by Pound ‘the true Dantescan voice’ of modernism, hails him as ‘a European’ in an essay of 1929, which, according to Samuel Beckett, sports an ‘insufferable … professorial tone’. Beckett, who early on in his career demonstrates the presence of Dante in Joyce’s Work in Progress , develops instead, after his slothful character BelacQua, a purgatorial Dante whose faint, shadowy presence traverses his oeuvre. Dante is, of course, a long-term presence in the history of English-language literature: a major occurrence in Chaucer but notably absent in the period between him and Milton, Dante is regarded as an example of medieval lack of measure throughout the eighteenth century. Rediscovered in the nineteenth century, his perceived Romantic genius is first reflected through the figure of the Byronic hero and then welded to the Risorgimento. Today, Dante remains an icon, associated in mainstream literary culture with poetic excellence, Italian musicality, and even mystery, but also treated by contemporary artists with the kind of irreverence that would be unthinkable without the experiments of the modernist period. 1 The first half of the twentieth century is a key historical moment to understand the leap between Dante as the hero of national unity and a Dante exploded and fragmented – the Dante of Andrea Zanzotto, or of Ciaran Carson’s Inferno , for instance. -

At the beginning, there is a description of the methods employed in the preparation of the calendar, directions on how to use a standard entry and a list of the abbreviations and symbols used in the calendar. For further information, researchers should consult the Guide to Documents Relating to French and British North America in the Archives of the Sacred Congregation de Propaganda Fide in Rome, 1622-1799, prepared by the same author and published by the National Archives of Canada in 1990. That guide, which serves as an introduction to the Calendar, provides a history of the congregation, the organization of its archives, a study of several projects carried out by the archivists and historians using documents held by that institution, and a description of the methodology used in preparing the Calendar. -

MARCO FORLIVESI A Man, an Age, a Book 1. A man Bartolomeo Mastri was born in Meldola, near Forlì, on 7th December, 1602, into the lower aristocracy of the town. He en- tered the Order of Friars Minor Conventual in about 1616 and was educated at the Order’s studia in Cesena, Bologna, and Naples. After a brief period of teaching logic in the studia of the Order in Parma and Bologna, he completed his period as a stu- dent in the ‘Collegio di S. Bonaventura’ in Rome in the years 1625-1628. From 1628 to 1638 he was Regent, together with his fellow Brother Bonaventura Belluto from Catania, of the Order’s studia in Cesena and Perugia. In 1638 he was promoted, together with Belluto, to the post of Regent of the ‘Collegio di S. Antonio’ in Padua, a post he retained until 1641. From that year, which according to the customs of the time marked the end of his ca- reer as a teacher, until 1647 he resided alternately either in Mel- dola or Ravenna, a city where he held the post as private theolo- gian to Cardinal Luigi Capponi. In the meantime, together with Belluto, from 1628 to 1647 he planned, wrote and published his first great work: a cursus of Scotist philosophy articulated into logic, physics, and metaphysics. In 1647 he was elected Minister of his Order for the Province of Bologna. When this assignment was completed, in 1650, he returned to Meldola, where he lived until 1659 and compiled most of his theological works. From that year, until 1665, he was frequently a member of the retinue of the General Minister of his Order, Giacomo Fabretti from Ra- “Rem in seipsa cernere”.
