ROBERT BURNS DAY – JANUARY 25, 2020 Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And never brought to mind?

Robert "Robbie" Burns was born on January 25, 1759 into the Should auld acquaintance be forgot, family of a peasant farmer in southwest Scotland. Burns himself And auld lang syne! took up farming at a young age and having no success; he began writing poems for local circulation. Soon, he had them published in For auld lang syne, my dear, a book in the small town of Kilmarnock. Copies of the Kilmarnock For auld lang syne. edition reached Edinburgh and the intellectuals there were We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,

impressed right away. Most of Burn's poems were short, lyrical For auld lang syne. - Robert Burns

pieces but they became an instant hit. It is said his poems

celebrate the natural love between a man and woman, the enjoyment of sociable drinking and the pride of the self-reliant man

and woman. His life lasted for less than 40 years, but his “Auld Lang Syne” has survived for over 250 years and will continue to survive.

WANDERING THOUGHTS

(as we see them)

Ain’t it balmy – compared to this time last week? The accumulations of snow each evening for a few days was rearranged by the wind on Saturday to make for an unpleasant day – good to be on the inside looking out! And then the cold temps combined with the wind – not much wonder Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday saw record- breaking natural gas consumption. You know it’s cold when the ice plant at the local curling rink freezes up!

But heh – it could be worse – like St. John’s, Nfld – so much snow, no place to put it other than dumping it into the ocean! And it’s only the 3rd week in January! Facebook gave us some insights into some of the residents being able to cope with humor when opening their door to find the snow totally blocking their exit – making a snowman face – using it as a fridge for ‘beverages’ – snowbanks over 6 feet high!

And now we are supposedly in for some more seasonable – and maybe above -- temps for the next week or so … we’ll take it!

Have you managed to escape the flu bug so far? According to the stats we are dealing with the A strain H3N2 – BUT the B strain which normally hits in February and March has for some reason arrived early this season.

Can’t help but reminisce the years we entertained at the annual Robbie Burns Night festivities in Wapella – readings, song, dance, huge crowds, awesome food (including haggis), costumes, etc. Happy Robbie Burns Day!

CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP

• 2 boneless skinless chicken breasts (cooked & shredded) • 8 cups chicken broth • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 4 celery stalks (chopped) • 4 whole carrots (chopped) • 1/2 onion (diced) • 1/4 teaspoon thyme • 1 teaspoon minced garlic

• 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon pepper • 1 cup egg noodles

In a large pot over medium heat, cook onion and celery in oil until just tender, 5 minutes. Add chicken & broth. Add other ingredients, except noodles. Bring to a boil, lower heat and cook for 30 min. (until vegetables are cooked). Add noodles, bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes (until noodles are tender). Serve Hot.

WHO TO BELIEVE

On Monday (20th) – the day the recent “deep freeze” gave in, an unusual happening was experienced. The car registered -24° at noon…by the time we got to the junction of 9 & 48, the temp had risen to -5°. Reaching Carlyle, it had dropped to -13° - remaining about the same all afternoon – to Stoughton/Fillmore.

On the return trip, once again we witnessed a variation – Q: What’s the difference between a by the time we got to the same junction some 5 hours church bell and a politician? later, the temp registered -8° …

A: A church bell Peals from the area HOT SPOT or what? Steeple. (there were witnesses!)

2020 – 2021 SASK LOTTERIES COMMUNITY GRANT PROGRAM (Through the Wawota Recreation Board)

Each year funding is available through Lotteries, based on a per capita amount, for the population of the Town of Wawota plus allocations of populations from RM #92 and RM#93. The program is designed to provide funding for sport, culture and recreation programs and is administered through the Wawota Recreation Board.

The Rec. Board then disperses the money to local groups and clubs that have made application for funding for their eligible programs. The fast approaching deadline to apply for the 2020-2021 Community Grant is February 21, 2020 – NO exceptions.

For application forms or more information on the program criteria, please see Debbie at the Municipal Office.

PLEASE NOTE: This is also a reminder to anyone that received grant monies from the 2019-2020 Saskatchewan Lotteries Community Grant Program - the MANDATORY Follow Up Report showing all eligible expenditures for your approved program must be turned in to Debbie on or before March 31, 2020 in order for the Recreation Board to access funding for the next program year. Thank you for your immediate attention to this matter.

ATTENTION CITIZENS OF WAWOTA:

The Council of the R.M. OF WALPOLE NO. 92 are very concerned about the low numbers of ambulance personnel currently operating the Wawota Ambulance Service and the fact that there is no one stepping up to help out!

Did you know that the ambulance service no longer runs 24/7? There are fewer and fewer number of qualified personnel to cover all ambulance shifts therefore Wawota goes without service during those times. There is an average wait time of 35 minutes for an ambulance to come from another community to respond to an emergency in our community!

Did you know that personnel do indeed receive remuneration for being a “Community Ambulance Attendant &/or Driver”? Ambulance personnel are members of CUPE and are a part of a negotiated contract along with other Sun Country Health Region (SCHR) employees. Personnel receive $5.00/hour for every hour on standby. If you are called out for any reason, personnel are then paid approximately $21.00(+) per hour for actual time out or for at least a minimum of 3 hours.

Have you heard rumors that SCHR does not pay for all the expenses paid out in order to get certified? SCHR pays for a good portion of the expense to get certified once you have completed the EMR course, the EMR college of Paramedics exam and successfully been hired by SCHR (will also need Criminal Check, Work Reference and Minimum Class 5 Drivers License). You must pay for all expense up front then wait to be reimbursed by SCHR.

In an effort to assist with recruitment of ambulance staff for Wawota & District, the Council of the R.M. Walpole are proposing to pay for all the expenses incurred for you to become an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR). Fees will be paid on your behalf up front with no repayment schedule required. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED in becoming certified and helping out on YOUR ambulance – please contact the RM of Walpole office @ 306-739-2545 at your very earliest convenience.

Any time you can give to be on ambulance is more time that Wawota is covered! WAWOTA LIBRARY REPRESENTATIVE NEEDED

The Rural Municipality of Walpole No. 92 invite Walpole residents and/or ratepayers to sit on The Wawota Library Board as an appointed representative for the Municipality.

The Council is looking for one (1) person to sit on the Wawota Library Board as a Regional Board member. This Board member would attend a Spring & a Fall meeting in , SK as well as attend four to six (4-6) local library board meetings held in Wawota. This is a paid (per meeting attended) position plus mileage from your home to and from the meetings.

The Wawota Library is a very active board – please check out our Facebook page for a list of “What’s Happening at the Wawota Library”! If you are interested in sitting on the Wawota Library Board, please contact the R.M. of Walpole office, as listed below, on or before 5:00 p.m. on Tue., Feb. 11th, 2020. Appointments will be made at the next regular meeting of the Council on Wed., Feb. 12th, 2020.

The Council thank you in advance for your interest in being a part of this valuable asset within our communities. RURAL MUNICIPALITY OF WALPOLE NO. 92 Box 117, Wawota, SK, S0G 5A0 Phone: 306-739-2545 Fax: 306-739-2777 Email: [email protected]
