www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Congolius, a new genus of African reed frog endemic to the central Congo: A potential case of convergent evolution Tadeáš Nečas1,2*, Gabriel Badjedjea3, Michal Vopálenský4 & Václav Gvoždík1,5* The reed frog genus Hyperolius (Afrobatrachia, Hyperoliidae) is a speciose genus containing over 140 species of mostly small to medium-sized frogs distributed in sub-Saharan Africa. Its high level of colour polymorphism, together with in anurans relatively rare sexual dichromatism, make systematic studies more difcult. As a result, the knowledge of the diversity and taxonomy of this genus is still limited. Hyperolius robustus known only from a handful of localities in rain forests of the central Congo Basin is one of the least known species. Here, we have used molecular methods for the frst time to study the phylogenetic position of this taxon, accompanied by an analysis of phenotype based on external (morphometric) and internal (osteological) morphological characters. Our phylogenetic results undoubtedly placed H. robustus out of Hyperolius into a common clade with sympatric Cryptothylax and West African Morerella. To prevent the uncovered paraphyly, we place H. robustus into a new genus, Congolius. The review of all available data suggests that the new genus is endemic to the central Congolian lowland rain forests. The analysis of phenotype underlined morphological similarity of the new genus to some Hyperolius species. This uniformity of body shape (including cranial shape) indicates that the two genera have either retained ancestral morphology or evolved through convergent evolution under similar ecological pressures in the African rain forests. African reed frogs, Hyperoliidae Laurent, 1943, are presently encompassing almost 230 species in 17 genera. -

It is dis- tinguished from other species in its genus by an advertisement call that is pulsed, frequency modulated, and with a longer duration than that of K. senegalensis or K. maculata, and its grey and white reticulat- ed colour pattern. The gular strap, like that in K. senegalensis, is continuous with the thick, pleated skin of the vocal pouch, but unlike K. senegalensis, it is rounded and truncated posteriorly. In contrast, the gular gland of K. maculata is rounded and free at its posterior end. The finger and toe tips are not dis- tinct disks, but are only very slightly rounded and truncated when viewed from above. In lateral view, the tips are noticeably flattened. The potential presence of this species at the proposed development site requires careful consideration in terms of mitigation measures. The habitat survey took place in June 2014, which is outside of the species’ breeding season, but still provided an opportunity to assess wetland condition and vegetation to give an indication of suitability for Pickersgill’s Reed Frog. The habitat assessment indicates that the wetland areas on site are of a structure and vegetative composition that are suitable to Pickersgill’s Reed Frog and it is recommended that further surveys for the species are conducted during the peak breeding period to confirm species presence and guide recommendations regarding possible mitigation measures. Terms of Reference 1. Undertake a site visit to identify all potential Pickersgill’s Reed Frog habitats onsite based on the latest current understanding of their habitat requirements. 2. Identify the likelihood of occurrence for each of the habitats identified. -

Only eleven widely-distributed anuran species have been recorded for the country (Table 1; Nickel 2003; Padial & De la Riva 2004), and all are categorized as species of least concern by the IUCN (2009). Mauritanian territory is largely unexplored, however, and it is likely that some of the 19 anuran species recorded from adjacent areas of neighboring countries could occur within its borders. In the course of herpetological research in The Gambia, only a few surveys have been undertaken in the eastern part of the country. During the present survey, I recorded 14 amphibian species, eight of which had not been documented in the Kiang West National Park before. New distributional records of Afrixalus vittiger and A. weidholzi were recorded in The Gambia. These data bring the total number of amphibians known in The Gambia up to 34. Because only three areas were surveyed, which differ in vegetation, water conditions and anthropogenic influence, more species may be expected to occur. Key words.
