With a feeling of profound gratitude to my country for giving me this opportunity to learn, I submit this dissertation in the belief that there is room in the academic world for the writing of a lateral thinker who finds it impossible to take a narrow focus on life, or on the art which portrays it. ^.M.H. 1 V PRECIS Tn an analysis of six novels this dissertation looks at the way four authors reacted creatively to the challenge presented by the Great Depression and World War II. The features that these works have in common are numerous and significant from a literary viewpoint, and reflect their common genesis. Regardless of their affinities, however, we can appreciate that diversity of style and presentation which is to be expected from individual authors as a result of their personal and unique points of view. Furthermore, when we penetrate their surface preoccupation with social matters, and when we read these works from a perspective of world literature, as well as Australian literature, we find qualities of literariness and language that have largely gone unrecognised by critics of these novels. At least three of the authors studied reveal a modernist sensibility which breaks with the traditional chronological forms of the novel, and questions the function of the artist in a troubled world. Another parallel feature to be found in the novels of this time is a moral and philosophical stance on matters of social justice from the broad perspective of international affairs, while they continue to carry the democratic banner -of earlier Australian writers. The discussion focuses on the way the authors resolve the artistic problems raised by their socially critical stance by using the existential consciousness of their characters to portray coevally the problems of human existence and those of contemporary society. (Chris Wallace-Crabbe, 'A Wintry Manifesto'). If Australian writers of the thirties and forties did not fully exploit the Great Depression as subject matter, as has been the opinion of several literary historians,^ it is because they saw the slump as symptomatic of a wider disorder in the Western world. However, it can be seen in the considerable amount of fiction that was produced that the unrest of the period was sufficient catalyst to unleash a surge of creativity. The Great Depression, its final years aggravated by the imminence of World War II, and the war itself with its blitz of the world's great cities, culminating in the destruction of Hiroshima, presented writers with a special impetus which cannot be contained in the notion of subject matter. Much of the fiction that was produced here in the thirties and forties was generated in a mood of disquietude caused by the anxieties of the age and a compulsion to confront them and explore them artistically. Reid cites Fred Alexander (Australia Since Federation. p.128); Geoffrey Serle (From Deserts the Prophets Come, p.1232); Stephen Murray-Smith, and Ian Turner (in Geoffrey Dutton, ed.. The Literature of Australia. 1964 edition), as being amonst those who say that the Depression made no noticeable impact on Australian writers. Reid repudiates these statements by demonstrating the catalytic effect of the phenomenon on writers, both here and in New Zealand. 3 0009 02898 2648 and property, were seen by many writers as evidence of grave flaws in the Western capitalist system, and the large number of novels that were produced reflects their concern with the problems of society and its individual members, and for the ultimate destiny of humanity as a whole. This thesis examines six novels of the period 1930- 1947 in which the moral dilemmas of capitalism and the artistic problems which a society in a state of crisis presents to the creative writer are held in tension. The novels to be discussed are Eleanor Dark's Waterway (1938), and The Little Company C1945); Kylie Tennant's The Battlers (1941), and Ride on Stranger (1943); M. Barnard Eldershaw's Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow (1947); and J.M.Harcourt's Upsurge (1934). Although my title specifies the Depression era, as Ian Reid reveals, depressed and depressing conditions applied in Australia at least up to 1950.^ Furthermore, the advent of World War II was crucial to the creative impetus of at least two of these novels, and links between the Depression and the war which followed are well established in all but Upsurge. the earliest of the six. I want to analyse the novels, both as fiction, and in the context of their authors' ideological and humanist convictions which led them to put contemporary events on a philosophical rather than a political plane. They reveal that the preachings of Christ and Karl Marx were basically of the same thrust. Both expounded ideals which, because of the nature of Man, are Utopian more than 1. Reid, Fiction and theGreat Depression. Introduction. they are practical.^ My choice of texts was influenced by the fact that these novels, separately and collectively, capture the tenor of an era, one which saw Australian writers become aware of the social upheavals in countries geographically remote from Australia. They are of further interest because they reflect artistic developments in the modern novel. In accord with David Carter, I recognise a tension in these novels between the creative imagination and a socially critical imperative. As Carter says: 'This ambivalent status is characteristic of documentary and socially critical fiction, which both claims and disclaims art in order to establish its own truth.

By the mid-1930s, a group of distinctly Western Australian writers was emerging, dedicated to their own writing careers and the promotion of Australian literature. In 1938, they founded the Western Australian Section of the Fellowship of Australian Writers. This first detailed study of the activities of the Fellowship in Western Australia explores its contribution to the development of Australian literature in this State between 1938 and 1980. In particular, this analysis identifies the degree to which the Fellowship supported and encouraged individual writers, promoted and celebrated Australian writers and their works, through publications, readings, talks and other activities, and assesses the success of its advocacy for writers’ professional interests. Information came from the organisation’s archives for this period; the personal papers, biographies, autobiographies and writings of writers involved; general histories of Australian literature and cultural life; and interviews with current members of the Fellowship in Western Australia. These sources showed the early writers utilising the networks they developed within a small, isolated society to build a creative community, which welcomed artists and musicians as well as writers. The Fellowship lobbied for a wide raft of conditions that concerned writers, including free children’s libraries, better rates of payment and the establishment of the Australian Society of Authors.

    Book History in Australia since 1950 Katherine Bode Preprint: Chapter 1, Oxford History of the Novel in English: The Novel in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the South Pacific since 1950. Edited by Coral Howells, Paul Sharrad and Gerry Turcotte. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2017. Publication of Australian novels and discussion of this phenomenon have long been sites for the expression of wider tensions between national identity and overseas influence characteristic of postcolonial societies. Australian novel publishing since 1950 can be roughly divided into three periods, characterized by the specific, and changing, relationship between national and non-national influences. In the first, the 1950s and 1960s, British companies dominated the publication of Australian novels, and publishing decisions were predominantly made overseas. Yet a local industry also emerged, driven by often contradictory impulses of national sentiment, and demand for American-style pulp fiction. In the second period, the 1970s and 1980s, cultural nationalist policies and broad social changes supported the growth of a vibrant local publishing industry. At the same time, the significant economic and logistical challenges of local publishing led to closures and mergers, and—along with the increasing globalization of publishing—enabled the entry of large, multinational enterprises into the market. This latter trend, and the processes of globalization and deregulation, continued in the final period, since the 1990s. Nevertheless, these decades have also witnessed the ongoing development and consolidation of local publishing of Australian novels— including in new forms of e-publishing and self-publishing—as well as continued government and social support for this activity, and for Australian literature more broadly.

    A Career in Writing Judah Waten and the Cultural Politics of a Literary Career David John Carter MA Dip Ed (Melb) Thesis submitted as total fulfilment of requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Faculty of Arts, Deakin University, March 1993. Summary This thesis examines the literary career of Judah Waten (1911-1985) in order to focus on a series of issues in Australian cultural history and theory. The concept of the career is theorised as a means of bringing together the textual and institutional dimensions of writing and being a writer in a specific cultural economy. The guiding question of the argument which re-emerges in different ways in each chapter is: in what ways was it possible to write and to be a writer in a given time and place? Waten's career as a Russian-born, Jewish, Australian nationalist, communist and realist writer across the middle years of this century is, for the purposes of the argument, at once usefully exemplary and usefully marginal in relation to the literary establishment. His texts provide the central focus for individual chapters; at the same time each chapter considers a specific historical moment and a specific set of issues for Australian cultural history, and is to this extent self-contained. Recent work in narrative theory, literary sociology and Australian literary and cultural studies is brought together to revise accepted readings of Waten's texts and career, and to address significant absences or problems in Australian cultural history. This led to many studies of the pair's joint literary output and short biographical studies and much misinformation, from scholars beguiled into believing Barnard's stories which were often deliberately disseminated to protect the secrecy of the affair that dominated her life between 1934 and 1942. A re-examination of her life and work is now necessary because there have been huge misunderstandings about other aspects of Barnard's life, too. Her habit of telling imaginary stories denigrating her father, led to him being maligned by his daughter's interviewers. Marjorie's commonest accusation was of her father's meanness, starting with her student allowance, but if the changing value of money is taken into account, her allowance (for pocket money) was extremely generous compared to wages of the time.

    224 CONCLUSION This literary study and close account of her social philosophy has demonstrated that the novelist, Eleanor Dark, was also a vigorous social protester and moralist, both concerned with pressing contemporary problems and with their psychological origins, and bent on showing in her fiction a close connection between political forces and individual lives. It has been made clear in this critical treatment .:hat, with a romantics revolutionary turn of mind, she was determined to open her readers eyes to so many social injustices. These were all too often perpetrated by mediocre leaders, and yet the people, in their ignorance and apathy, were hardly aware of them. To illustrate this she created a series of idealistic, independently thinking characters who set out to right social wrongs by exercising heroic personal integrity, by being true to their own consciences, and by establishing ideals which would enrich, rather than constrict, both the individual and society as a whole. The study has shown, however, that Dark always emphasised the need to put theory into action, and to curb simplistic idealism with a measure of lived practicality. There was presented in Chapter 2 the writers perception of human existence as a progression or journey, with her questing protagonists energetically engaging with all aspects of life as they struggled toward the goal of social harmony and the desired realisation of personal potential. Throughout, there has been critical emphasis upon the novels impressive celebration of life, and I have endeavoured to show that the vitality of Darks daring protagonists became a means of judging the behaviour of others, as she contrasted them with those lesser and more timid characters who refused Ito participate willingly in the mortal contest.

    Divine Horizons: Religion and Social Class in the Lives of Two Leading Australian Women, Betty Archdale and Kylie Tennant Deidre Michell Gender, Work and Social Inquiry University of Adelaide, Adelaide, SA, 5005 [email protected] Abstract: In this chapter I examine the experiences of two influential twentieth-century women, Betty Archdale (1907–2000) and Kylie Tennant (1912–1988), through the lenses of social class and religion. Both women were born into middle–upper-class families and both had mothers who continued to identify as Christian Scientists until they died. Archdale and Tennant, however, both converted to the Anglican Church as adults, sharing this as well as their ongoing critiques of the Australian establishment. Despite their conversion to mainstream Christianity, I argue that some aspects of Christian Science doctrine influenced both women in their public lives. Keywords: Betty Archdale, Kylie Tennant, social class, Christian Science, women’s leadership, social conditions, women in sport, girls’ education Betty Archdale (1909–2000) was a leader in women’s sport, particularly cricket. As a prominent educationalist during the 1950s and 1960s she was also an early advocate for what is now known as ‘lifelong learning’ and encouraged girls to take up studies in the ‘hard’ sciences in advance of the second wave feminist movement. Born in London, Archdale first became well known in Australia as captain of the English women’s cricket team during the significant first test match between the Australian women’s cricket team and the English women’s cricket team in the Australian summer of 1934–1935. During this first tour of Australia, Archdale was particularly struck by the egalitarian composition of the Australian women’s cricket team, a factor which influenced her decision to make her home in Sydney after World War II.
