    7 Intersecting and Contrasting Lives: G.M. Trevelyan and Lytton Strachey Alastair MacLachlan This essay is about history and biography in two senses. First, it examines two parallel and intersecting, but contrasting lives: that of George Macaulay Trevelyan (b. 1876), probably the most popular historian and political biographer of early twentieth-century England – a Fellow and in old age the Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, an independent scholar for 25 years and, for 12 years, Regius Professor of Modern History – and that of his slightly younger Trinity protégé, Giles Lytton Strachey (b. 1880), a would-be academic rejected by the academy, who set himself up as a critical essayist and a historical gadfly – the writer credited with the transformation of a moribund genre of pious memorialisation into a ‘new’ style of biography. Second, the essay explores their approaches to writing nineteenth-century history and biography, and it assesses their works as products of similar but changing times and places: Cambridge and London from about 1900 to the 1930s.1 1 I shall therefore ignore Trevelyan’s later writings (he died in 1962), and concentrate on the biographies written by Strachey (S) and Trevelyan (T), with a focus on their nineteenth-century studies. 137 CLIO'S LIVES ‘Read no history’, advised Disraeli, ‘nothing but biography, for that is life without theory’. Kline, M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2007 Dissertation Committee: Professor David Riede, Adviser Approved by Professor Clare Simmons _______________________ Professor Amanpal Garcha Adviser Graduate Program in English ABSTRACT Educated Speech: Victorian Philology and the Literary Languages of Matthew Arnold and Arthur Hugh Clough argues that Matthew Arnold’s and Arthur Hugh Clough’s poetry and its political and social resonances can be fruitfully illuminated by focusing on the extended encounter between the language of their poems and Victorian philology—the nineteenth-century discourse that brought together issues of language, history, class, culture, and nationalism. This dissertation explores the ways that Clough’s and Arnold’s understanding of their medium was shaped by a sustained engagement with this complex and heterogeneous cluster of linguistic ideas including the persistence of eighteenth-century concepts of language, Romantic philology, and the emergence of historicist/comparativist orientations to language that all co-exist during the Victorian period. I argue that Arnold’s and Clough’s evolving understanding of language emerges from the ways in which Victorian philological insights are mediated through the Victorian educational establishment, and subsequently has such a mediated understanding is translated into specific and significant aesthetic features in their poetry such as the use of slang or the deployment of the simile. Further, because both Clough and Arnold subscribed to the central creed of Victorian philology—that language indexed cultural health—, the ii grounding of such aesthetic and formal qualities of the poems in this discourse allows us to recover or foreground additional aspects of the political and cultural resonances of Arnold’s and Clough’s poetry.

    Bertrand Russell in Bloomsbury S. P. ROSENBAUM I The topic ofthis paper is not topographical. But ifit were, perhaps the first thing to be said about Bertrand Russell in Bloomsbury is that his family owned a good part of the place. There were Russells in Bloomsbury long before there were Stephens or Stracheys. The Dukes of Bedford were Bloomsbury's landlords, and the squares and streets that the Group inha­ bited bore names associated with Russell's family-Bedford, Tavistock, Woburn, and Russell itself. But my title ofcourse is metonymic and stands for the significance of Bertrand Russell's thought and character in relation to the Bloomsbury Group, especially their literary history. That is an involved subject, and in order to survey it here I have had to concentrate on Russell's ideas rather than their embodiment in the philosophical assumptions ofBloomsbury's work. I have tried elsewhere to describe the particular nature of the Bloomsbury Group, the complicated interaction of puritanism, Utilitarianism, liberalism, and aestheticism in their intellectual background, and the literary uses to which Virginia Woolf and E. M. Forster put Moore's and Russell's Realism.! A more immediate context for Russell's influences on Bloomsbury that must also be taken for granted here is the Cambridge setting in which Bloomsbury encountered Russell. He was one of four philosophers, all members of the celebrated, now notorious, Cambridge Conversazione Society, a.k.a. the Apostles or the Society. Like Goldsworthy Lowes Dickinson, John McTaggart Ellis McTaggart, and G. E. Moore, Russell's influence on the Apostolic brothers who came to make up the male contingent of Bloomsbury was both intel­ lectual and personal.

    KOZAK, BRUCE G. Charles George Gordon: The Evolution of a British Hero. (1973) Directed by: Dr. Ann P. Saab. Pp. 163 During the Second British Empire, Britons actively sup- ported the idealized conception that one lone British officer or civil administrator could accomplish strenuous and often dangerous tasks, through sheer determination and a charis- matic personality. Charles George Gordon, during his ill- fated expedition to Khartoum, was portrayed by the majority of Britons as the epitome of this highly romantic image. The purpose of this research is to examine critically the growth and development of the so-called Gordon legend. In doing so, one must attempt to discover the individuals responsible for its creation, while simultaneously examining the social, po- litical and economic environments of Great Britain and certain Oriental countries, which had a direct bearing on the legend itself. Contrary to popular and some scholastic opinion, Gordon was scarcely recognized by the British public during and after his exploits in China (1863-1864) and his early ad- ventures in the Sudan (1874-1879) . He only obtained enduring fame from an empire-minded public when he was sent to evacuate Egyptian troops during his second Sudanese mission in 1884. It was necessary to examine letters, newspapers (both Liberal and Conservative) and diaries written during Gordon's life time, in order to trace the changing attitudes toward a British Empire and the officers and civil administrators who strengthened British prestige overseas. It was also essential to examine these materials to ascertain the reasons for the fluctuation in Gordon's popularity between the 1860's and 1880's.

For ignorance is the first requisite of the historian--ignorance, which simplifies and clarifies, which selects and omits, with a placid perfection unattainable by the highest art. Concerning the Age which has just passed, our fathers and our grandfathers have poured forth and accumulated so vast a quantity of information that the industry of a Ranke would be submerged by it, and the perspicacity of a Gibbon would quail before it. It is not by the direct method of a scrupulous page 1 / 391 narration that the explorer of the past can hope to depict that singular epoch. If he is wise, he will adopt a subtler strategy. He will attack his subject in unexpected places; he will fall upon the flank, or the rear; he will shoot a sudden, revealing searchlight into obscure recesses, hitherto undivined. He will row out over that great ocean of material, and lower down into it, here and there, a little bucket, which will bring up to the light of day some characteristic specimen, from those far depths, to be examined with a careful curiosity. Guided by these considerations, I have written the ensuing studies. I have attempted, through the medium of biography, to present some Victorian visions to the modern eye. While most critics’ focus on the books economic arguments, there has, to date, been limited analysis of the reasons for the success Keynes enjoyed in communicating his ideas to a wider audience. By applying the tools of literary criticism to the book it is possible to uncover a number of implicit and explicit influences, which help explain how Keynes developed a unique way of reaching out to a wide range of readers.
