    Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve Moth Survey 2009 Fauna Conservation Department Kadoorie Farm & Botanic Garden 29 June 2010 Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden Publication Series: No 6 Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve moth survey 2009 Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve Moth Survey 2009 Executive Summary The objective of this survey was to generate a moth species list for the Butterfly Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest [SSSI] at Fung Yuen, Tai Po, Hong Kong. The survey came about following a request from Tai Po Environmental Association. Recording, using ultraviolet light sources and live traps in four sub-sites, took place on the evenings of 24 April and 16 October 2009. In total, 825 moths representing 352 species were recorded. Of the species recorded, 3 meet IUCN Red List criteria for threatened species in one of the three main categories “Critically Endangered” (one species), “Endangered” (one species) and “Vulnerable” (one species” and a further 13 species meet “Near Threatened” criteria. Twelve of the species recorded are currently only known from Hong Kong, all are within one of the four IUCN threatened or near threatened categories listed. Seven species are recorded from Hong Kong for the first time. The moth assemblages recorded are typical of human disturbed forest, feng shui woods and orchards, with a relatively low Geometridae component, and includes a small number of species normally associated with agriculture and open habitats that were found in the SSSI site. Comparisons showed that each sub-site had a substantially different assemblage of species, thus the site as a whole should retain the mosaic of micro-habitats in order to maintain the high moth species richness observed.

    Status Report TEA PESTS AND THEIR MANAGEMENT WITH BIO-PESTICIDES Seema Wahab' ABSTRACT The increasing demand for higher productivity of tea results in its intensive cultivation, which increases the pressure from insect pests on this crop. Chemical pesticides, irrespective of their toxicity status, are being extensively applied. Their various detrimental effects become apparent in the ecosystem including residues in made tea. Bio-control agents such as parasites, predators, and fungal, bacterial and viral pathogens have strong potential to act as effective alternatives to chemicalpesticides. In this paper, an attempt has been made to compile all available information on biocontrol research on tea around the world as well as in lndia. This information will not only he$ to focus the possibility of using these agents against tea pests, but also will identify the gap of biopesticidal research for designing the future thrusts.     THE CHEMICAL CONTROL OF THE TWIG CATERPILLAR (ECTROPIS BHURMITRA) IN TEA W. Danthanarayana & D. J. W. Ranaweera Studies on the life cycle of the Twig Caterpillar indicate that the most appropriate time for chemical sprays is when the caterpillars are in the second and third stages of their development, that is, during the fourth and the fifth week after the emergence of the moths. Of fifteen insecticides evaluated, only two gave significantly lower counts of caterpillars than the untreated, two weeks after treatment. DDT at the rate of six pints per acre and Sandoz 6538 at the rate of one pint per acre proved to be effective. The control obtained with Sandoz 6538 appeared to be superior to that obtained with DDT. Introduction Twig caterpillar (Ectropis bhurmitra Warr.) infestations are known to cause considerable damage to tea. There are reasons to believe that the present outbreaks in Ceylon have resulted from side-effects of dieldrin spraying against Shot-hole Borer (Xyleborus fornicatus Eichh.). The biology of the Twig Caterpillar is being studied in detail. So far, two hymenopterous parasites and a number of hyperparasites (para­ sitic on parasites) have been obtained from caterpillars collected from different districts. The two parasites, which have not yet been fully identified, belong to the same group of parasites as Macrocentrus homonae Nixon, the commonest parasite of the Tea Tortrix (Homona cqffearia Nietner). It appears that the twig caterpillar out­ breaks following dieldrin spraying are caused by the parasites being destroyed in the course of shot-hole borer control, as it happens with the parasites of Tea Tortrix.

We propose 4 new combinations, namely Arichanna refracta Inoue, 1978 stat. nov.; Psyra matsumurai Bastelberger, 1909 stat. nov.; Olene baibarana (Matsumura, 1927) comb. nov.; and Cerynia usuguronis (Matsumura, 1927) comb. nov.. The noctuid Blepharita alpestris Chang, 1991 is regarded as a junior synonym of Mamestra brassicae (Linnaeus, 1758) (syn. nov.). The geometrids Palaseomystis falcataria (Moore, 1867 [1868]), Venusia megaspilata (Warren, 1895), and Gandaritis whitelyi (Butler, 1878) and the erebid Ericeia elongata Prout, 1929 are newly recorded in the fauna of Taiwan.
