3-ON-3 RULES

Each player is responsible for presenting a current UNC ONE CARD or valid government ID at game time.

TEAMS, COURT, AND GAME

A men’s size ball will be used for men’s games and a women’s size ball will be used for women’s games.

The same ball must be used for the duration of the game. If teams cannot agree on a ball, an Intramural Sports ball will be used.

Each team may have no more than six [6] players on a roster.

Each team may have up to two [2] substitutes who may enter the game on any dead ball. A team must have three [3] players to start and continue a game.

* Three [3] players must be present at game time. If two [2] players are present at game time, a default will be recorded. If less than two [2] players are present, a forfeit will be recorded.

Each team will designate one player to shoot for possession of the ball to start the game. The shot will be taken from the top of the three point arc. Thereafter, jump balls shall result in alternating possessions. The team that does not gain possession to start the game will gain possession to start the second half.

Games will be played to twenty-one [21] points or two halves of ten [10] minutes each – whichever comes first. A team must only win by [1] point. If a game is tied at the end of regulation play, there will be a three [3] overtime period (only in the playoffs) with no point cap. Overtime will be repeated until one team wins.

The boundary lines are: the end line, the center court line, and both sidelines.

Timeouts can only be called by the Sport Programs Operation Assistant for injuries and special circumstances. If play is stopped for an injured player, that player must leave the game until the next dead ball.

Substitutions may be made on any dead ball.

CHANGE OF POSSESSION AND CHECK LINE

Ball possession changes after each made basket.

The “check line” shall be the 3-point line at the top of the . A player must pass the ball in from the “check line” after a dead ball and each basket.

After ANY live ball change of possession, the ball must be returned to a point anywhere behind the 3- point arc. At least one [1] foot must be placed on the ground beyond the 3-point arc, and the player in possession of the ball may retain control and attempt to score.

SCORING

Baskets made from inside the 3-point arc will be awarded [1] point, and baskets made from beyond the 3- point arc will be awarded two [2] points.

FOULS, FREE THROWS, & VIOLATIONS

All games will be self-officiated. The offended team is responsible for calling fouls and violations (advantageous body contact, , double-dribble, etc.).

The following rules shall apply in regard to fouls and violations:

A. Fouls must be called immediately by the player being fouled. B. Violations must be called by the defender who is guarding the person that commits the . C. All fouls will be considered common fouls, and the ball will be put into play from behind the “check line” by the fouled player. D. If a player is fouled in the act of shooting and makes the basket, the basket will be awarded and the will be disregarded with the defensive team taking possession. E. Beginning with the 5th team foul committed in each half, the opposing team will receive one [1] . If the free throw is missed, the ball will be a live ball and the ball must be returned to a point anywhere behind the 3-point arc regardless of the team in possession. If the free throw is made, the opponent will receive the ball at the “check line”. F. During the last 1 minute of the 2nd half, the clock will stop during free throw attempts and will start back once the ball is touched on a missed free throw or on the check-in from a made free throw. During free throw attempts, the non-shooters may enter the lane on the shooter’s release and the shooter may enter the lane after the ball contacts the rim. Team foul counts will be reset after the first half. G. Unsportsmanlike conduct WILL NOT be tolerated. In cases of verbal and/or physical misconduct, the Court Monitor and/or Program Supervisor retain the right to eject a player[s] or team[s] from the game and/or tournament.

DISPUTE

In cases where teams cannot reach an agreement on a disputed incident, one player (any one) from each team will shoot from the top of the key. The same two players will shoot the dispute in its entirety. However, any two are eligible to shoot the next dispute. Shots will alternate until one player has made a basket when the opponent has not. The team of the player scoring the unanswered basket will get the call. (Baskets do not count toward game score.) If this system does not work, the supervisor will decide the issue. The supervisor's decision may include the termination of the game.

OPERATION ASSISTANT

The operation assistant has total control over the game and shall keep the score, time the game, keep the foul count, and serve as mediator if the calls cannot be resolved by the players.

Although the operation assistant keeps the official score, teams will be responsible for keeping track of the score, and there will be no protests of the final score at the end of the
