NKT is looking for an optical engineer to support the research, development and activities of the Aerospace & Defence department based in Southampton, UK. Working within a multi- disciplinary team, you will be taking ownership of the and testing of prototype , both high power fibre systems and novel supercontinuum and ultrafast fibre laser systems. Developing manufacturing techniques and processes, build instructions / operating procedures and working with the production team to successfully transfer processes from prototype to manufacture.

Key responsibilities • Supporting the execution of the Aerospace & Defence department in the UK site. • Characterisation and testing of optical components, sub-assemblies and systems. • Building and characterizing prototype laser systems under appropriate instructions from other members of the team. • Work with project managers to ensure successful and on-time delivery of project outcomes. • Setting up and performing verification tests on prototype systems to an agreed . • Data of verification test results, regular reporting of results to other members of the team and updating of progress against plan. • Setting up and running life test on prototype systems to an agreed plan. • Data analysis of life test results and regular reporting of results to other members of the team and updating of progress against plan. • Conduct FMEA’s and suggest improvements • Developing new manufacturing techniques and processes as required for • Documenting build procedures in the form of work instructions and training production personnel to manufacture new systems • Identify additional knowledge from outside of the company that can be applied to projects in order to solve problems • Support dissemination of knowledge internally in order that team are informed of relevant progress on solutions and issues • Prepare and deliver presentations/reports and necessary quality documentation describing progress, technical performance and procedures on projects and assignments.

Required skills and experience • A 2.1 first degree or above in , natural or • Fibre and free space optics knowledge • Strong practical hands-on skills and methodical working practices • Excellent data analysis and problem-solving skills • Microsoft excel – the total familiarity with data analysis and data manipulation in excel • Excellent team player • Strong communications skills, both oral and written • Experience with LabVIEW, Matlab or Python. • Documentation skills – MS Office • Ability to work on own initiative in a small multi-disciplinary team • Ability to communicate and present ideas to other and across the . • Strong organisational skills to be able to work on multiple concurrent projects.
