DSC). Prepared by: Daniel S. Cooper Cooper Ecological Monitoring, Inc. October 2010 1 Part I. Summary of Findings Part II (species accounts) begins after p. 26. We present information on extant occurrences of 15 special-status species, subspecies and/or varieties of vascular plants in Griffith Park and contiguous open space, including three for which no known local specimen existed prior to this study: slender mariposa-lily (Calochortus clavatus var. gracilis; CNPS 1B.2), Humboldt lily (Lilium humboldtii var. ocellatum; CNPS 4.2), and Hubby's phacelia (Phacelia hubbyi; CNPS 4.2). Using lists developed by local botanists, we document - from specimens or digital photographs - extant occurrences of nearly 40 additional plant taxa felt to be of conservation concern in the eastern Santa Monica Mountains, including 16 for which no prior specimen existed for the park or surrounding open space. We also identify several dozen taxa known from the specimen record but unconfirmed in the park in recent years. From this information, we discuss patterns of occurrence of rare plants in the park, drawing attention to "hotspots" for rare species diversity, such as Spring Canyon and Royce Canyon, and identify areas, particularly in the northeastern corner of the park and along the southeastern border, where rare plants are relatively poorly represented in the landscape. -

College Avenue Claremont, Calif. 91711 ABSTRACT The Liebre Mountains form a discrete unit of the Transverse Ranges of southern California. Geo graphically, the range is transitional to the San Gabriel Mountains, Inner Coast Ranges, Tehachapi Mountains, and Mojave Desert. A total of 1010 vascular plant taxa was recorded from the range, representing 104 families and 400 genera. The ratio of native vs. nonnative elements of the flora is 4:1, similar to that documented in other areas of cismontane southern California. The range is note worthy for the diversity of Quercus and oak-dominated vegetation. A total of 32 sensitive plant taxa (rare, threatened or endangered) was recorded from the range. Except for the effec's of the weather which are given elsewhere in this report, the year was one of steady and sound development. The building program of the previous year had been completed, and early in 1971 landscaping around the annex was finis3ed and the grounds once again were quiet and serene, suitable for study and contemplation by the thousands of persons who visit the garden each year. Among events which undoubtedly will mark this year in the garden's history are two, especially, which should be mentioned. The botanic garden is a member of the American Association of Museums and durinJ; the year we applied for accreditation by that organization. In August we were notified that we had been granted interim approval until an on-site evalu1tion of the institution could be made by the AAM Accredit1tion Visitin~ Commit tee. This visit is expected early in 1972. The second item of interest is that the botanic garden for the first time applied for a plant patent to cover a new hybrid which soon will be released to the horticultural trade. -

Various methods in tissue culture and molecular breeding have been applied to the production of commercially important lily species and cultivars. However, scientific research data of such species and varieties that have potential in the northern climate is scarce. In this work, different biotechnological methods were developed and used in the production and culture of a diversity of lily species belonging to different taxonomic groups. The aim was to test and develop further the existing methods in plant biotechnology for the developmental work and the production of novel hardy lily cultivars for northern climates. -

Thorne Plant geographers and floristic taxonomists in recent years have become more insistent that monographers define their categories more accurately than they have in the past. Instead of accepting passively the infraspecific rank, usually variety or subspecies, available in the taxonomic literature, authors of floras are deciding from their own, often considerable knowl edge of the plants involved what the appropriate infraspecific category should be and making needed combinations. Among such recent authors who have thus chosen to make their own combinations are Munz ( 1958, 1974), Keck (1958), Calder and Taylor (1965), Hulten (1967, 1963), and Taylor and MacBryde ( 1978). Understandably they had become impatient with the inability of the botanical taxonomic community to reach general agreement on the definition of taxa. Zoological taxonomists without undue rancor or polemics seem to have rather early achieved general agreement upon the use of subspecies for their geographically significant infraspecific category. The variety ( varietas) through most of early botanical taxonomic history has been the infraspecific term generally used to represent all infraspecific ranks from near-species or major race with great geographic and ecologic significance (subspecies) to minor genetic variants, perhaps in many in stances controlled by a single gene, that occur haphazardly throughout the range of the species (forma). -
