They represent formal strategic planning processes that have come under criticism, in part for not representing the emergent strategy path that organisations follow in practice. This criticism of formal planning’s efficacy has coincided with a marked decline of research output in this field. This is at odds with the practice world of strategy, where formal strategic planning has become a hallmark of good governance. A Strategy-as-Practice (S-a-P) stream of research has emerged over the last fifteen years to counter this divide between theory and practice and has largely focused on the micro-practices of strategy making. This study is firmly rooted in this tradition of looking at the micro-practices of strategy work to offer novel explication on new ways of organising. This study follows the social life of a strategy document in an institute of higher education from its initial conception, writing, consultation and use, to understand the role these curious documents play in organisational life. Philosophically, this work is inductive, phenomenological, and interpretive. As a process, it presents an ethnography of strategy making, an autoethnography of strategy consultations, a deconstruction of the strategy text produced as an output, and interviews with all those in and around the strategy document’s life in the organisation. Themes of power and dramaturgy emerged in the exploration of strategy making that are further developed by reflecting on how the strategy interacts with organisational life. The tightly controlled and somewhat inauthentic strategy-making, reveals a surprising emancipatory aspiration that is reflected through the strategy in use. These findings question the the lack of focus on the concept of power in the strategy research agenda. The work follows a single strategy document’s life and therefore has a limited claim to generalisability, however, in presenting an all-encompassing view of strategy work through the strategy document, the work presents a totalising account of the role of this document in an organisation. This is a coherent account of the social life of a strategy document from in inception to its life in the organisation. The work adds to an emerging critical perspective on strategy practices and is of interest to managers and strategists alike in considering the process of writing, consulting and calling upon their strategy documents. The study adds a new perspective to the meaning of strategy work in the modern ideal of the university. Cornwall Benjamin W. Porter conducted an archaeological survey and excavation project in eastern Saudi Arabia 240 Barrows Hall, #1940, and Bahrain in 1940 and 1941. At least twenty-four burial features were excavated in Department of Near Eastern Bahrain from five different tumuli fields, and surface survey and artefact collection Studies, University of California, took place on at least sixteen sites in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. It was further cemented with Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030, which has strengthened sustainability and reinforced competitiveness and justice, with the aim of doubling real household income by 2030. Under the leadership of the Prime Minister, His Royal Highness Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, and with the support of the Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, there has been strong focus by the government towards economic, human, structural, and civil development, which enabled Bahrain to meet the Millennium Development Goals and laid down strong foundations for sustainable development. Achievements: 0% of Bahrainis live below the poverty line. The average annual economic growth in the last decade was 37.4%, and in 2017 the average per capita GDP was approximately US $22,000. Expenditure on health services, education and social protection exceeds 35% of total government expenditure. Basic education is free and compulsory. The net enrollment ratio for primary and secondary levels is 100% and 86.4% respectively, consequently eliminating illiteracy; while enrollment in kindergartens is 82%. The population receives free healthcare with free medical prescriptions.

    School of History and Archaeology The Archaeology of Kuwait By Majed Almutairi A thesis submitted in fulfilment of requirements for a Ph.D. in Archaeology Supervisor: Professor Denys Pringle i Summary This thesis addresses the archaeology of Kuwait from 13000BC to the 18th century AD, to further understand its significances within the Arabian Gulf and wider world. Kuwait has witness many diverse cultures By comparing for the first time the archaeology, geography, and historical sources, I illustrate that this region has been continual inhabited and used as an important hub of social networks since its beginnings. By introducing the Ubaid civilization and their relations with other regions, we witness the first exchange and trade strategies in Kuwait. By looking at the burial mound phenomenon in Kuwait we witness a hiatus of permanent settlements and a time when people were more nomadic. The impact of these mounds resonated into later periods. Petroleum based substances play a key role in modern Kuwait; the Ubaid and the Dilmun first developed the usage of bitumen, and here we see how that created links with others in the world. Ideas move as well as people, and I demonstrate the proto-Hellenistic and Hellenistic periods in Kuwait to illustrate influences from the Mediterranean. Modern Kuwait is Islamic, and here we will investigate how and why and the speeds at which Christianity gave way to Islam, and the impacts of a different religion on the region. In highlighting Kuwait’s past, I show how the state became one of the most democratic and diverse places in the Arabian Gulf.

    Map 95 Tylos Compiled by D.T. Potts, 1995 Introduction The map can show few ancient toponyms, hydronyms and ethnonyms. Rather, it is dominated by the modern names of archaeological sites at which important finds of Greco-Roman origin, or of a Greco-Roman-related nature, have been made. The reason is quite simply that this area lay largely beyond the ken of ancient authors such as Strabo, Pliny and Ptolemy, whose works show little familiarity with the landscape. Theophrastus’ works contain important detail on the natural history of ancient Bahrain, but no toponyms apart from Tylos. The city of Gerra (possibly modern Thaj) was reasonably familiar to a number of authors, but the precise locations of minor settlements and tribes were not. In many cases it is particularly difficult to be certain whether or not an east Arabian toponym or ethnonym falls within the limited scope of Map 95, and I have therefore listed most unlocated toponyms in the Directory for Map 4. The most recent studies of the geomorphology of coastal Arabia reveal evidence of very minor fluctuations in sea level during the later Holocene era. Around Bahrain, for example, sea levels may have been slightly lower in the last centuries B.C. and first centuries A.D. than they are today, with the consequence that the shoreline near the great mound of Qalat al-Bahrain was further north than at present. Along the coast of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates (Map 95, inset), sea level fluctuations during the Iron Age and Hellenistic periods are thought to have eroded the margins of a series of coastal lagoons, which resulted in “coastal” settlement being situated at points well inland from the modern shoreline (Sanlaville 1987, 216, 218).

    ARABIA AND THE ARABS Long before Muhammad preached the religion of Islam, the inhabitants of his native Arabia had played an important role in world history as both merchants and warriors. It also shows the importance of the site, the demography of the region, the distribution of population, and the most important cities in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Firstly, the study deals with the geographical location of the Kingdom of Bahrain; secondly, it shows the importance of the site with respect to its geographical location; and thirdly, analyzes the most important geographical features, shapes and topography. The study also examines the prevailing climate and the most important natural resources found there. The study also referred to the population census in it, the census of the indigenous population the proportion of foreigners and the percentage of Sunnis and Shiites in Bahrain. At the end of the study, the most important cities in the Kingdom of Bahrain were also summarized. The study, as a whole, talks about the most important historical features of the Kingdom of Bahrain.
