FOREWORD As preparation for the university's centennial in 1995, an index to The Sunflower, Wichita State University's student newspaper since 1896, was felt to be essential. Volunteer and Library Associates board member Marijean Berg began work on this project in 1991, and logged 1000 hours reading and indexing over the next two years. Editing and word processing services were provided by the Special Collections staff, including Teri Tatro, Shauna Payne, and Mary Nelson. Not every article that has appeared in the paper is indexed. Notes on the composition of the index follow. • In most cases, index entries are added only at inception, special events, recognition, or discontinuation of activities or organizations. • Beginning with January 1926, newly employed faculty ceased to be listed solely for their arrival on campus unless extensive biographical information or photographs were included. • Faculty members are mentioned upon recognition for honors, publications and important speeches. • Faculty members who became administrators are listed under the highest administrative capacity achieved. • When part of date, the letter f represents illustrations and photographs that accompany articles. • When the letters SM follow a date, the article is located in the Sunflower Magazine. • The Sunflower began publication in 1896 as a bi-monthly newspaper but by the next year it was published each month. In 1907 it became a weekly paper, continuing in this format until 1955. It then was published twice weekly. Finally, in 1966, the three-times weekly format was adopted, and has continued to the present. A complete set of The Sunflower is available on microfilm in the Reserve department of Ablah Library. The actual newspapers are held in the Special Collections department.
