I am thankful to all my family members, friends, and co-workers for their solid support and encouragement. ii Dedication To the Southern Sudanese women refugees, your narratives are a source of strength, resilience, and empowerment. iii Abstract Over the past two decades, the United States of America, Australia, Canada, Britain and other Western European nations have witnessed a high influx of African Refugees from war torn countries in Africa. Southern Sudanese left their country to escape the civil war between Southern Sudanese and the Northern dominated government. The civil war began intermittently in 1955 and continuously in 1983. The civil war ended in 2003 and has resulted in the death of 2 million and the displacement of four million Southern Sudanese (UNHCR, 2001). The lives of the Southern Sudanese refugees have not been easy after resettlement, especially the lives of women. Many Southern Sudanese women have experienced violence and rape during the civil war in Sudan and in refugee camps and have lived in fear of such violence (Tankink & Richters, 2007). The resettlement of Southern Sudanese women refugees into a society that is geographically and culturally different has been challenging. The dissertation indicated that adjustment to a new culture is a difficult process for many women refugees. (Sullivan & Deacon, 2009), (Martin, 2004). Barriers that hinder the adjustment process include racial and cultural discrimination against women refugees in the host society. Women refugees are likely to face racism and sexism in seeking employment or vocational training in their host country. There also personal barriers that hinder the adjustment process for refugee women. These barriers include iv trauma, lack of language skills and vocational skills, and cultural differences (Martin, 2004). In general, there is a little literature that focuses on the African refugee resettlement experience in the US (Boas, 2007), (khawaja, et al, 2008) and there are less literature on Southern Sudanese women refugees and their overall adjustment in their new environments. This study expands the understanding of the Southern Sudanese women refugees’ experiences and the barriers that prevent them from achieving their goals. The significance of the study lies in its search for a deeper understanding of the process through which Southern Sudanese women refugees attempt to balance their life demands as they are integrating to American norms and values. This area of knowledge, based on the experiences of Southern Sudanese women as they settled in Minnesota brings increasing awareness of the particular needs of Southern Sudanese refugee women. This will also assist service providers, educators, and policy makers in developing best practices when working with Southern Sudanese women refugees This is a qualitative study research used narrative analysis. For this qualitative research, a purposive sample of 7 Southern Sudanese refugee women was selected to participate in the study. Two methods of recruitment were used; first through nominative sample and second through the resettlement agencies and adult education centers in Minnesota. Strict measures to ensure that participants were protected from any undue harm or coercion as a result of interviews. v The sample selection criteria were as follows: Be a Southern Sudanese women refugee 21years or older; has entered the United States with refugee status; is able to communicate in English or Arabic; has been living in the US for longer than one year, who is coming back to school or in school to get an education or some sort of credentials related to language skills or career preparation. The findings of this study supported and corresponded with the literature. The interviews of the seven Southern Sudanese women refugees revealed a range of reactions and experiences in navigating and resettling in their new home, Minnesota. The variation of the women’s ages and backgrounds, and the circumstances of their experiences, produced a variety of themes. The most prevalent themes identified were the cultural conflict and its impact on resettlement; the challenges the women experienced in adapting to their new homes; the impossibility of returning back home; the traumatic experiences pre and post resettlement; and coping and sources of resilience. The narrative methodology allowed the women refugees the voice to provide a context specific knowledge beyond the generalized explanation of the refugees experiences in the literature thus adding a rich picture of this marginalized group and their perspectives and unique experiences to the literature. In October 2007, the research for this final paper started and it became clear to me that writing this paper means more to me than writing about other subjects. This final paper is about a subject that really interests me, namely child soldiers in Darfur, Sudan. This paper is written to inform you about why they exist, the circumstances they live in and what, in my view, can be done to stop the recruitment of child soldiers in Darfur. The civil war in Darfur is complicated and it takes time to understand why the conflict started. I have tried to write it down shortly and by doing this, I hope you can understand a little of what the conflict is about. A war always has victims. And most of the time, children are involved. There is a shortage of food, clean (drinking)water, education and medical care. I have read many reports about the number of children who work as child soldiers for armed groups. Children cannot protect themselves against these circumstances so they have to be protected by international law, international organizations etcetera. The situation in Darfur is a humanitarian disaster. International newspapers write about it, television stations broadcast programmes or newsflashes about it, but the situation has not improved since it started in 2003.

    IM/MOBILITY: HOMELAND, IDENTITY AND WELLBEING AMONGST THE BENI-AMER IN ERITREA-SUDAN AND DIASPORAS Thesis Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Leicester Saeid Hmmed BSc MSc (OU) Department of Geography University of Leicester September 2017 i Abstract This thesis focuses on how mobility, identity, conceptions of homeland and wellbeing have been transformed across time and space amongst the Beni-Amer. Beni-Amer pastoralist societies inhabit western Eritrea and eastern Sudan; their livelihoods are intimately connected to livestock. Their cultural identities, norms and values, and their indigenous knowledge, have revolved around pastoralism. Since the 1950s the Beni-Amer have undergone rapid and profound socio-political and geographic change. In the 1950s the tribe left most of their ancestral homeland and migrated to Sudan; many now live in diasporas in Western and Middle Eastern countries. Their mobility, and conceptions of homeland, identity and wellbeing are complex, mutually constitutive and cannot be easily untangled. The presence or absence, alteration or limitation of one of these concepts affects the others. Qualitatively designed and thematically analysed, this study focuses on the multiple temporalities and spatialities of Beni-Amer societies. The study subjected pastoral mobility to scrutiny beyond its contemporary theoretical and conceptual framework. It argues that pastoral mobility is currently understood primarily via its role as a survival system; as a strategy to exploit transient concentration of pasture and water across rangelands. The study stresses that such perspectives have contributed to the conceptualization of pastoral mobility as merely physical movement, a binary contrast to settlement; pastoral societies are therefore seen as either sedentary or mobile.

    Lost Boys, Found Church: Dinka refugees and religious change in Sudan’s second civil war Sudan’s second civil war, which began in 1983 and ended in 2005, transformed society in southern Sudan. A key factor in this transformation was the widespread displacement the war brought about. Some southern Sudanese sought refuge in remote communities within the country or in government-controlled cities such as Juba or Khartoum. But a major stream of displacement was across international borders. By 1987, there were hundreds of thousands of southern Sudanese living in an archipelago of camps in southwestern Ethiopia. When the Ethiopian government was overthrown in 1991, the focus of refugee life shifted to new camps in Kenya, Uganda, and Sudan. In this, Sudan’s civil war was unexceptional. The conflicts that have formed and deformed African societies in recent generations have reliably resulted in both internal and external displacement. During Sudan’s first civil war in the 1960s, many southern Sudanese took refuge in Uganda. In the 1970s and early 1980s, the relationship reversed: Ugandans fleeing violence in their own country were living in southern Sudan. By the early 1990s, the relationship reversed yet again as southern Sudanese again sought safety in northern Uganda. The African continent has consistently been among the top producers of refugees in the world, who have been the focus of academic study in a range of disciplines. The experience of displacement in sub-Saharan Africa has coincided with the rapid growth of Christianity in the region. The future history of the church, it is said, will be written outside its historic heartlands in the Euro-Atlantic world and in no place more fully than in Africa.
