CL 791 COMEDY Spring 2019, M 2:30-5:15 pm, STH 409. Professor Henderson ([email protected]) Office Hours MWF at 1:15 or by appointment

No, political leadership’s no longer a job for a man of education and good character, but for the ignorant and disgusting. , Knights 191-93

Goals. Introduction to fifth-century (with a glance at fourth-century) Attic comedy with emphasis on its portrayal of and other populist politicians following Aristophanes’ Knights (Lenaea 424) in light of other contemporary information. Readings are not confined to the texts set on the PhD reading list (but as a professional, you can never know too much!) and include “fragments” i.e. ancient quotations from plays subsequently lost: a focus of current scholarly activity in the field.

Evaluation. Attendance at meetings; participation in translation, analysis, and discussion; a substantial (and ideally publishable) scholarly paper on a subject approved by the instructor. Definitions, policies, and procedures regarding cheating and plagiarism are as stated in the BU Academic Conduct Code, which students are expected to know and follow, and which is available online at bu.edu/academics/policies/academic-conduct-code/.

Required Reading Course materials, including asterisked readings, are available on Blackboard Learn.
