Football Club MARYHILL FOOTBALL CLUB IT’S A WHOLE NEW BALL GAME… ONLINE MATCH PROGRAMME MARYHILL FC - A SHORT HISTORY The club were formed back in 1884 when the district of Maryhill was a semi rural settlement on the outskirts of Glasgow. In the earliest years of the club's OUR OPPONENTS THIS SEASON history the side had a brief flirtation with senior football, entering the Scottish Cup on several occasions, but the majority of our existence has been in WEST OF SCOTLAND LEAGUE the Junior grade. Having moved ground several times in its formative years, the club has called Lochburn Park its home since the latter years of the 19th century. Originally one of Glasgow's more basic football venues, an extensive upgrading programme in the 1990s transformed it into one of the premier stadia in the Junior game, regularly hosting local and regional finals. Over the years the Hill have won a long list of honours, bringing the "Holy Grail" of the Scottish Junior Cup back to Lochburn on two occasions; the first win being in 1900 (1-0 v Rugby XI at Shawfield) and the second in 1940 (1-0 v Morton Juniors at Hamoden). The club enjoyed its most recent sustained period of success in the years around the Millennium, with back to back league titles secured whilst also reaching three Junior Cup semi-finals although on all three occasions we fell at the penultimate hurdle. Many great players have worn the red and black over the years; many never took the step up to the senior game, but among those who did were the likes of Tommy Burns, Danny McGrain, Davie Meiklejohn and Alex Harley. After a decline in the club's fortunes in the mid-2000s following the necessity of financially downsizing, Maryhill dropped down the leagues, eventually suffering the indignity of relegation to the bottom of the West Region setup. After eight seasons of competing in the District leagues however, in season 2015-16 the Hill won promotion back to the Superleagues, where we spent two seasons before being relegated back into the third tier. April 2020 saw us accepted into the newly-formed West of Scotland League, bringing to an end more than a century of participation in the Junior ranks and seeing us move to Tier 7 of the Scottish football pyramid. This season we will compete in Conference A, where we look forward both The withdrawal of several teams for the season prior to today’s opening round to renewing old friendships and rivalries and forging fresh ones in our new of fixtures necessitated the redrawing of the Conferences. The 13 teams environment. above will now take part in this season’s Conference A. Cup following their 2-0 extra-time victory over Camelon, but the ambitious young club from North-east Fife are back again, trying to retain the title they won so honourably last year. Tayport's impact on the Junior scene in seven short years since their admission has been quite remarkable . And this year 's Final pitches them against Pollok, another side who have also a very good record in the Cup since they won it for the first time in 1981 when they defeated Arthurlie. Despite both sides having regularly promessed to the advanced stages of the competition on a regular basis, this will only be the second meeting between the pair with Tayport out to exact revenge for the defeat inflicted upon them back in 1991 , Tayport's first season in the ranks of the Juniors . From the evidence of both semi-finals, an exciting encounter looks guaranteed this afternoon . Pollok were worthy winners against Blantyre Victoria at Adamslie Park, whilst Tayport's narrow win over Arthurlie was a very closely contested affair. I am more sure that both club's will do the occasion justice as both sides put the accent on skill. Match of the Day The last two finals have been clean sporting affairs and I would prevail on both clubs for a repeat of that discipline on the field.

During Scottish football’s formative years, however, the ascendancy of the Old Firm was far from set in stone. The exhaustive study of these two extraordinary organisations, therefore, greatly distorts our understanding of Scottish football’s Victorian origins. Both clubs were part of a far greater scene which included not only fellow ‘senior’, well-established clubs, but also any number of ‘junior’, ‘juvenile’ and non-classified football clubs, as well as fledgling associations which oversaw the regulation of the young game.

  • Season 1918/19 Was David Prophen Mclean, a Man of Many Clubs, but Playing with Rangers in This Particular Season
Season 1918-1919 St Mirren FC. The season opened on 17 August with victories for Rangers, Celtic and Morton. These three clubs would dominate the final wartime season. By the end of September, Rangers had full points from their first seven games, with Celtic and Morton one point behind after these sides drew 1-1 in August. Rangers did not drop a point until the last game in October, when a 0-0 draw with Motherwell still kept them three points ahead of Celtic after ten games. By the turn of the year Rangers still led the table with 32 points from 18 games, closely followed by Morton and Celtic. Rangers won the Glasgow Cup on 5 October against Celtic. In an ill-tempered match, both Peter Pursell and Jimmy McColl were sent off by the referee G W Hamilton. After an intense year of fighting, the Germans having a final Spring Offensive and the Battle of the Marne, World War One came to an end in 1918, with the signing of the Armistice. The negotiations were carried out in Ferdinand Foch’s railway carriage headquarters at Compiegne. Kaiser Willhelm II abdicated on 7 November and three days later he fled to Holland, on the same day that the German Republic was founded. The fighting ceased the following day on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918. The treaty of Versailles would officially end World War One on 28 June 1919. As the brave soldiers returned home, another horror was just beginning for them.
