Although the closing minutes were less dramatic Glenafton’s “get out jail” finish at the Albyn Park the week before. Nevertheless there were some notable similarities between the two games. It was Broxburn that broke the deadlock again , this time through a cracking curling strike from Scott McNaughton soon after the break. As before it was a David Gray free-kick that drew the sides level, another stunner and per- haps if anything topping the one at Albyn Park. Broxburn again re- sponded well but were unable to restore the lead on this occasion and a cute head flick from Joe Andrew set up the alert Mick McCann to guide the ball beyond the reach of the advancing goalkeeper. As at Albyn, the Glens found the net for a third time with captain Craig Menzies the architect beginning with a lung bursting run from his own half to the corner of the six yard box and then keeping a cool head to roll the ball back to Cammy Marlow to drill a low shot from the edge of the penalty box through a ruck of players and spark of scenes of celebrations. Although we return to the league campaign today there is a Scottish Junior Cup theme as we are delighted to host the Scottish Junior Cup champions Beith Juniors and congratulate them in the winning the trophy for the first time in the club’s history. So it’s an extra special welcome to the players & management, club officials & committee and of course the supporters that have travelled to get behind their team too. 5 GLENS NEWS Squad News John Paul Boyle is still not fully fit and Darren McGill has a slight hamstring problem Glenafton Management Team Question & Answer Night Monday 3rd October “Very good Q&A session down at loch park tonight with fans and Committee members. Hopefully flowers from the club brightened up her day and we hope see Crawford back at Loch Park soon. ERIC’S A TREASURE Club treasurer Eric Wilson reached a 30 year milestone with Glenafton Ath- letic this week . Although to many his work behind the scenes often goes unnoticed his tireless efforts are greatly appreciated by the club . We would like to thank Eric for his all hard work and commitment to the club and we look forward to his continued support. In recognition and appreci- ation of his service to the Glens we will present Eric with a memento prior to kick-off to- day’s match. Thank you, Eric CONGRATULATIONS BEITH JUNIORS It gives Glenafton Athletic great pleasure to congratulate everyone at Beith Juniors on winning the Scottish Junior Cup Final for the first time in the club’s history after a tense penalty shoot-out victory over Pollok at Rugby Park on the 29th May 2016— now an unforgettable date in the club’s history. Of course Beith Manager John Millar is held in high esteem at Gle- nafton Athletic for his contribution as a player in bringing the Holy Grail to Loch Park for the first time in our history and we were especially delighted for him. Glenafton are pleased to present Beith with a memento before kick-off to mark their fantastic achievement—well done “The Mighty” and best wishes from all at Glenafton Athletic. IN MEMORY of RYAN BAIRD, RIP The footballing community and our near neighbours at Kirkconnel and Sanquhar were left in shock on Saturday when news filtered through that the bus carrying members of the Nith Valley Loyal Rangers Supporters Club overturned at Crossroads roundabout. Eighteen of the thirty-six supporters travelling to Ibrox Stadium were injured and tragically 39 year old Ryan Baird from Sanquhar lost his life. Originally from Northern Ireland Ryan was a very popular member of the club and well liked in the community. Glenafton Athletic would like to offer the club’s deepest sympathies to Ryan’s family and friends and as a mark of respect a minute’s silence will be observed before kick-off. 7 Scottish Junior Cup 2nd round draw Forfar Albion v Blackburn Glenafton v Livingston Downfield v Nairn Vale of Clyde v Beith Yoker v Irvine Vics Kinnoull v G. O.V.D. SCOTTISH .IUNIOR CUP ~INAL Sunday, 18th May 1997 ~ POLLOK F.C. • ~ TAVPO:T F.C. ~ Fir Park, Mothervvell Kick-off 3.00pm Oll=ll=ICIAL PROCRAMME - PRICE £ 144·1#1•=i43J9;ii 2·iilW t doesn't seem twelve months since Tayport were here at Fir IPark, claiming the O.V.D. Cup following their 2-0 extra-time victory over Camelon, but the ambitious young club from North-east Fife are back again, trying to retain the title they won so honourably last year. Tayport's impact on the Junior scene in seven short years since their admission has been quite remarkable . And this year 's Final pitches them against Pollok, another side who have also a very good record in the Cup since they won it for the first time in 1981 when they defeated Arthurlie. Despite both sides having regularly promessed to the advanced stages of the competition on a regular basis, this will only be the second meeting between the pair with Tayport out to exact revenge for the defeat inflicted upon them back in 1991 , Tayport's first season in the ranks of the Juniors . From the evidence of both semi-finals, an exciting encounter looks guaranteed this afternoon . Pollok were worthy winners against Blantyre Victoria at Adamslie Park, whilst Tayport's narrow win over Arthurlie was a very closely contested affair. I am more sure that both club's will do the occasion justice as both sides put the accent on skill. Match of the Day The last two finals have been clean sporting affairs and I would prevail on both clubs for a repeat of that discipline on the field.
