4 WELCOME TO LOCH PARK

Last week’s Scottish Junior Cup 1st round replay against Broxburn Athletic proved to be another tense affair. Although the closing minutes were less dramatic Glenafton’s “get out jail” finish at the Albyn Park the week before. Nevertheless there were some notable similarities between the two games. It was Broxburn that broke the deadlock again , this time through a cracking curling strike from Scott McNaughton soon after the break. As before it was a David Gray free-kick that drew the sides level, another stunner and per- haps if anything topping the one at Albyn Park. Broxburn again re- sponded well but were unable to restore the lead on this occasion and a cute head flick from Joe Andrew set up the alert Mick McCann to guide the ball beyond the reach of the advancing goalkeeper. As at Albyn, the Glens found the net for a third time with captain Craig Menzies the architect beginning with a lung bursting run from his own half to the corner of the six yard box and then keeping a cool head to roll the ball back to Cammy Marlow to drill a low shot from the edge of the penalty box through a ruck of players and spark of scenes of celebrations.

Although we return to the league campaign today there is a Scottish Junior Cup theme as we are delighted to host the Scottish Junior Cup champions Beith Juniors and congratulate them in the winning the trophy for the first time in the club’s history. So it’s an extra special welcome to the players & management, club officials & committee and of course the supporters that have travelled to get behind their team too.

GET WELL SOON CRAWFORD The club is delighted to announce the Crawford Sloan of the Glenafton La- dies Committee is on the mend and is now out of hospital and recovering a home. Hopefully flowers from the club brightened up her day and we hope see Crawford back at Loch Park soon.

ERIC’S A TREASURE Club treasurer Eric Wilson reached a 30 year milestone with Glenafton Ath- letic this week . Although to many his work behind the scenes often goes unnoticed his tireless efforts are greatly appreciated by the club . We would like to thank Eric for his all hard work and commitment to the club and we look forward to his continued support. In recognition and appreci- ation of his service to the Glens we will present Eric with a memento prior to kick-off to- day’s match. Thank you, Eric

CONGRATULATIONS BEITH JUNIORS It gives Glenafton Athletic great pleasure to congratulate everyone at Beith Juniors on winning the Scottish Junior Cup Final for the first time in the club’s history after a tense penalty shoot-out victory over Pollok at on the 29th May 2016— now an unforgettable date in the club’s history. Of course Beith Manager John Millar is held in high esteem at Gle- nafton Athletic for his contribution as a player in bringing the Holy Grail to Loch Park for the first time in our history and we were especially delighted for him. Glenafton are pleased to present Beith with a memento before kick-off to mark their fantastic achievement—well done “The Mighty” and best wishes from all at Glenafton Athletic.

IN MEMORY of RYAN BAIRD, RIP The footballing community and our near neighbours at Kirkconnel and Sanquhar were left in shock on Saturday when news filtered through that the bus carrying members of the Nith Valley Loyal Rangers Supporters Club overturned at Crossroads roundabout. Eighteen of the thirty-six supporters travelling to Ibrox were injured and tragically 39 year old Ryan Baird from Sanquhar lost his life. Originally from Northern Ireland Ryan was a very popular member of the club and well liked in the community. Glenafton Athletic would like to offer the club’s deepest sympathies to Ryan’s family and friends and as a mark of respect a minute’s silence will be observed before kick-off. 7 Scottish Junior Cup 2nd round draw

ETHX Scottish Junior Cup 1st Round Replay Saturday 1st October 2016 |Loch Park, New Cumnock

The visitors were forced to make an early change after keeper Connor Wallace picked up an injury after 10 minutes and was replaced by young goalies Shaun Donoghue. Both sides created a number of chances with the Glens perhaps creating the best of these on offer, without however finding the net before the half ended goal-less. It was Broxburn, as they had at home, that broke the deadlock three minutes after the break. Glens lost possession in the middle of the park and the ball quickly despatched down the right flank for Ross Nimmo to gather and break into the box before picking out the incoming Scott McNaughton in the far side of the box who took a touch or two before composing himself before curling a peach of shot over a clump of defenders and in the top corner of the net. Deja vu and David Gray struck again six minutes later as the ‘No.6’, as he had at Broxburn, drew the sides level with a trademark free-kick; this one perhaps the pick of the two with the powerful strike from 28 yards out flying over the wall before violently dipping into the top corner with keeper at full stretch. Broxburn responded well and came close on a couple of occasions to restoring only to be denied by keeper Brian McGarrity with a save low at his near post and then later a goal-line clearance. Glens fought back and Donoghue made a good save from substitute Mick McCann’s fly- ing header but could little to stop the striker putting the home side in front. A long ball lofted into the box saw Joe Andrew get the better of three defenders to fashion a backward header into the path of the inrushing Mick McCann and after allowing the ball to bounce once before guiding past the advancing keeper on 82 minutes. Five minutes later and the Glens sealed their passage to the sec- ond round after captain Craig Menzies broke down a Broxburn just inside his own half and set of on his own Great Scottish Run with Joe Andrew for company but with the keeper and two defenders closing in at the corner of six yard box, he stopped in his tracks and rolled the ball back to Cameron Marlow to drill a low shot home from 18 yards out; the impressive Zee still having the puff to partake in the cele- brations. The visitors ended the match with 10 men after Nimmo earned a second yellow card.

12 Welcome to BEITH JUNIORS

SCOTTISH JUNIOR CUP WINNERS 2015/16 Scottish Junior Cup Vale of Clyde R2 H 10-2 Beith Juniors ’s historic path to Scottish Junior Cup glory began in the 2nd round with a 10-2 thrashing of Vale of Clyde, who finished the Girvan R3 A 0-0 game with 9 men. One of the finest striking partnerships in Junior Girvan R3 r H 2-1 football in recent times, Andy Reid (4) and Kenny McLean (2), bagged Scone Thistle R4 A 5-1 six of the goals. McLean bagged another double the in 3rd round re- play 2-1 win over Girvan, after a goal-less fright at the seaside. Nor- Petershill R5 H 3-1 mal service was resumed with a convincing 5-1 toasting of Scone, Arthurlie QF H 3-1 Nicky Docherty at the double on this occasion. Later rounds brought Kilwinning Rangers SF L1 H 3-0 stiffer opposition with back-to-back ties against fellow West Region Premier Division side. First up was bogey side Petershill who rein- Kilwinning Rangers SF L2 A 0-1 forced that status after taking the lead at Bellsdale, however a Paul Pollok Final N 1-1 Frize double either side of the break, Peasy reduced to 10 men and a 4-3 pens David McGowan strike set up a Quarter-final tie at home to manager John Millar home town and former team Arthurlie. The Mighty always Scottish Junior Cup Goalscorers looked in control and the Reid (1) and McLean (2) double act struck again to secure a 3-1 victory. An all Ayrshire semi-final saw Beith host Kenny McLean 6 Kilwinning Rangers in the 1st leg, flying high in the Super 1st Division. Andy Reid 6 Darren Christie set up Andy Reid to break the deadlock early in the Darren Christie 4 second half before keeper Stephen Grindlay denied the Buffs an equaliser after saving a Ben Lewis spot kick. Beith showed no mercy Paul Frize 3 and goals from Christie and skipper John Sheridan gave the home side Tom Collins 2 a 3-0 lead to take to Abbey Park, that proved unsurmountable for the Nicky Docherty 2 Buffs, although a Ross Stewart second half strike gave some hope. For the first time in the club’s history Beith were through to the Scot- David McGowan 2 tish Junior Cup final to face Pollok, three times winners and now con- Richard Burke 3 testing their sixth final. The Glasgow side had the best of the first John Sheridan 1 half at Rugby Park , although finished strongly. On the hour mark Darren Christie gave Beith a deserved lead only for veteran to draw the sides level ten minutes later in controversial fashion and force a penalty shoot-out. Andy Reid had been substituted and Kenny McLean missed Beith’s opening spot kick and the omens were looking bleak. No worries—Tom Collins, Paul Frize, Jamie Wilson and Richard Burke all scored while keeper Stephen Grindlay saved consecutive penalties from Allan Mac- kenzie and David Winters. The Mighty were Scottish Junior Cup champions for the first time!

13 Season 2016/17 SEASON 2016/17 Beith all but sailed through their Ardagh Glass Section with 4 wins and Ardagh Sectional Cup a draw . A 9-1 buffing of newly promoted Kilwinning Rangers, after Opponent F-A the Buffs had taken an early lead, in the last game in the section en- sured they earned home advantage in the Quarter-final against Ar- Kilbirnie Ladeside A 2-1 deer Thistle. Another one-sided contest ended in an 8-0 victory wit Dalry Thistle H 4-0 hat-tricks from Kenny McLean and Thomas Collins. In an eventful and hard fought semi-final away to Auchinleck Talbot. Goal-less at the Ardrossan Winton Rov H 4-1 hour mark the visitors were dealt a blow when keeper Calum McBain Largs Thistle H 2-2 was shown a straight card and with no substitute goalie, Tommy Mar- tin was handed the gloves. Soon after he was picking the ball out of Kilwinning Rangers A 9-1 the net following a classy finish from Keir Milliken. The 10 men drew Ardeer Thistle QF H 8-0 level through Paul Frize, two minutes from time and makeshift Martin looked set to face a penalty shoot-out only for the home side to bag a Auchinleck Talbot SF A 1-2 winner in injury time—nevertheless, revenge was on the horizon! Premier Division Beith having finished 7th in the Premier Division last season, 1 point Cumnock Juniors H 2-0 behind Glenafton, faced newly promoted 1st Division champions Cumnock Juniors in their opening league game of the season at Bells- Pollok H 2-2 dale. In a hard fought encounter the home side capitalised on two defensive blunders by the visitors allowing Calum Watt to open the scoring on 15 seconds and Kenny McLean to pounce on a pass back and Newton Stewart P1 A 4-0 lob the keeper for the second just before the hour mark. Last week in a repeat of the Scottish Junior Cup final Beith entertained Pollok and Auchinleck Talbot H 2-2 again the game ended all square after 90 minutes. Twice the home Auchinleck Talbot 1r A 3-0 side fell behind and twice they came back through goals from Mark McLaughlin and then from David McGowan in time added on. Strathspey Thistle H 6-0

As Scottish Junior Cup winners Beith qualified for entry into the ‘big’ Scottish Cup. Of course this is Beith’s sec- ond appearance in the competition as a Junior side following their heroic run in season 2010/11, when they gained entry as West Region Premier Division Champions. In the 1st round they defeated fellow Junior side and highly fancied Linlithgow Rose 2-0 at Bellsdale. Glasgow University were taught a lesson at Bellsdale in the 2nd round and caned 8-1. In the 3rd round Beith came within a whisker of causing a major upset after drawing 2- 2 away to Airdrie United and losing out by the odd goal in a 7 in the replay. In this season’s competition Beith travelled to face Newton Stewart in Preliminary Round 1 at Blairmount Park. A Paul Frize double put Beith in the driving seat but the Creesiders rallied and keeper Calum McBain pulled off some great saves before late strikes from subs Darren Christie and Ross McPherson settled the tie. The Preliminary Round 2 draw paired Beith with Premier Division Champions Auchinleck Talbot and both sides served up a cracker at Bellsdale. In Bryan Young volleyed home on 45 minutes to put the visitors ahead but the half-time oranges would have a tasted less sweet after Gary Wilson drew the sides level in injury time. Nicky Do- cherty turned the tables on 69 minutes to put the hosts ahead but it was the mighty that were left with the bit- ter late taste in their mouth after Gordon Pope conjured up an equaliser on 85 minutes. The Mighty Beith blew Bot away at Beechwood with a powerful display. The visitors took the lead in 2 minutes after David McGowan latched on to a John Sheridan pass before bursting into the box and giving Andy Leishman no chance. Darren Christie punished a defensive lapse to fire home from close range and double Beith’s advantage midway through the half. Matters went from bad to worse for the hosts after Bryan Young earned a second yellow card just be- fore the hour mark before Mark McLaughlin added a third to complete the scoring. Beith hosted former Junior side Strathspey Thistle, now of the Highland League in the 1st round proper. The Ayr- shire side were firm favourites and more than lived up to the billing and were four goals to good by half-time with Kenny McLean setting up Darren Christie for the opener in 6 minutes and Darren Christie doubling the lead 12 minutes later before McLean bagged a brace , including one from the spot. Substitute Ross McPherson and Nicky Docherty added second half goals for a 6-0 victory. Beith will travel to Lowland League side BSC Glasgow and in the 2nd round and we would like to wish them all the best.
