Whenever my memory has failed me I have drawn on the recollections of others or sought information from extant records. Seven decades have passed since the General Election of 1945 and there are few people now living with personal recollections of candidates who fought so long ago. I have drawn heavily upon recollections of conversations with older Liberal personalities in the West Midland Region who I knew in my early days with the party. I was conscious when I began work, twenty years ago, that much of this information would be lost forever were it not committed promptly to print. The Liberal challenge was weak in the West Midland Region over the period 1945 to 1959 in common with most regions of Britain. The number of constituencies fought fluctuated wildly; 1945, 21; 1950, 31; 1951, 3; 1955 4. The number of parliamentary constituencies in the region averaged just short of 60, a very large proportion urban in character.

John Twigg Homer - photo courtesy of Staffordshire County Buildings Picture Collection While walking along Dudley Street to the Post Office, have you ever wondered who once occupied Dormston House, the imposing mansion set well back from the road? In 1911, the house, now converted to flats, was recorded as being the home of 45-year-old John Twigg Homer, listed as ‘a single man’, the divisional chief officer of the labour exchange. The entry goes on the say he was born in Sedgley - and had 2 servants. However his census entry 10 years previously indicates that he had undergone a change in career - he was then a ‘mine agent’. "The Story of the Ancient Manor of Sedgley" published by E. A. Underhill in 1942 tells us more about this intriguing Sedgley resident, who appears to have been a man of great importance in the village: “Mr. J. T. Homer, who is a member of an ancient family belonging to the parish of Sedgley, was educated at Wolverhampton Grammar School, and although 34 years of age, he has had a remarkable and in many respects, a distinguished career. “Before he was out of his teens [note: before 1885] he was a volunteer in connection with the British expedition to Bechuanaland under Sir C. Warren, being a member of an irregular cavalry regiment [Methuens’s Horse], and whilst in Africa, he had some stirring adventures. “In 1887, he went to Canada, where he took up farming and led the life of a settler, in the Northwest Territory of Manitoba.

    SEDGLEY JOURNAL The occasional news-sheet of Sedgley Local History Society AUTUMN 2009 – Number 3 A SILVER CELEBRATION FOR THE SOCIETY The Society reached a milestone this year. Andrew Barnett and Trevor Genge launched the local history group in 1984. The nine Staffordshire villages of Sedgley Manor have always been the main focus supported by a museum that ran from 1988 to 2004 and a website started in 2003. Regular talks have been held at St. Andrew’s Church in Sedgley for over two decades. Members have listened to more than 150 speakers, written books, given talks and sketched and photographed every nook and cranny in the Manor. THE MONARCH PASSED BY A SEDGLEY MANOR MYTH In August 1575 Queen Elizabeth I was The Beacon Tower is regularly reported entertained in Dudley Castle. Staffordshire provides a good case-study area because of its wide variety of urban and rural parishes where this development can be assessed. Amongst the many causes of the change, the population size of the parishes and the sources of clerical funding are considered to be crucially important. The evidence suggests that where parishes exceeded 2000 people and where the worshiping community became the main provider of financial support, the parson model was increasingly difficult to operate. Out of necessity, and sometimes subconsciously, the clergy developed a model with significant professional features, even though the parson model continued to be promoted as the ideal.

    A NUTSHELL HISTORY OF SEDGLEY GEOLOGY The solid geology of Sedgley consists of impure limestones, shales, calcereous marls, clays, sandstones, coal-seams and nodular beds of clay ironstone. The oldest rocks of the parish are the bluish Wenlock limestones and shales, which were deposited during the Silurian Period. FOSSILS Fossils are the remains of living things which have been preserved in rocks. Geologists are interested in then because they provide evidence of the condition of the earth and of the life upon it through the ages. The rocks of Sedgley Beacon Sill are very rich in fossils, and exquisite specimens of fossil shells, corals, fish and ferns con be found there. Why not form a collection of your own? Listed below are the names which geologists give to some of the fossils found upon the Beacon Slopes: HELTOLITES Sun Coral TRILOBITES A remarkable Crustacean, commonly called the ‘Dudley Locust’ ATRYPA ORTHIS BHACHIOPODS Try to find out what these are like GASTROPODS FAVOSITES If you ask at the library for a book on fossils you will be able to add name labels to your own discoveries. HISTORY Early Underhill suggests that the district would have been ideal for the settlements of pre-historic folk, and later for the early Britons, who were men of the woods, and spent most of their time in hunting wild animals or collecting great stores of berries and edible leaves. Their houses would have been similar to the wigwams of the American Red Indians. Roman coins have been found at Hurst Hill, and it is recorded that a lane at Lower Gornal was once named, "The Roman Way".
