YOBE STATE MINISTRY OF HEALTH Situation Report TITLE COVID-19 Pandemic Situation Report SERIAL NUMBER 152 EPID-WEEK 06 DATE 8 – 14 February 2021 HIGHLIGHTS: Ten (10) new confirmed cases were reported in week 06, 2021 The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases is now two hundred and sixty (260) One (1) death was recorded amongst confirmed cases in week 06, 2021 The total number of deaths from COVID-19 in the state is nine (9) Nineteen (19) patients have recovered and got discharged One hundred and seventy-three (173) samples were collected in week 06. This is about a 47% increase in sample collection and testing compared to the preceding week Ten (10) samples tested positive, one hundred and sixty (160) are negative, and the results of the remaining thirteen (13) samples are pending The SPHCMB team, in collaboration with partners, conducted the motorized awareness creation campaign in high-burden LGAs (Damaturu, Bade, Potiskum, and Nguru) Yobe SMOH team, in collaboration with WHO HTR teams and AVADAR informants, UNICEF VCMs, and CGPP volunteers, conducted mass community sensitization, reaching 7,268 people with COVID-19 prevention messages. EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SUMMARY: The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases is two hundred and sixty (260). Sixty-seven (67) cases from Damaturu, fifty-four (54) cases from Nguru, thirty (30) cases from Fika, twenty-six (26) cases from Bade, twenty-five (25) cases from Nangere, twenty-cases (21) cases from Potiskum, seven (7) cases from Karasuwa, five (5) cases each from Jakusko, Tarmuwa, and, Yusufari, three (3) cases each from Gulani, Gujba, and Bursari, Geidam, and Fune have two (2) cases each, and two (2) other LGAs (Yunusari, and Machina) have one (1) case each The total number of active confirmed cases in the state is nineteen (19) 1 | P a g e The total confirmed cases of COVID-19 amongst Health Care Workers (HCWs) is nineteen (19). These include nine (9) doctors, seven (7) nurses, one (1) physiotherapist, and two (2) laboratory scientist The total number of deaths from COVID-19 in the state is nine (9) The total number of patients who recovered from COVID-19 is two hundred and thirty-two (232) The total number of contacts who completed 14 days of monitoring without symptoms is one thousand, five hundred and sixty-two (1,562) The total number of samples collected is five thousand, six hundred and nine (5,609). Surveillance and Epidemiology: All 17 LGAs in Yobe state have now recorded confirmed COVID-19 case(s) The case fatality rate amongst confirmed cases is 3.5% The positivity rate for week 6 is 6.3%, which represents a significant decrease compared to the positivity rate of the preceding week (12.3 %). The case to contact ratio is 1:7 The percentage of contacts that were confirmed positive is 6.2% Thirty-eight (38) additional contacts were line-listed by the contact tracing teams in Damaturu, Yusufari, Nangere, Nguru, Gujba, and Karasuwa LGAs Ninety-nine (99) contacts have completed 14 days of monitoring without symptoms in week 6. Point of Entry (POE): Conducted screening of passengers at the Points of Entries (POEs) Conducted supportive supervision at the POE in Bade, Geidam, Potiskum, Nguru, and Yusufari LGAs. Case Management: Ten (10) newly confirmed cases have been reported Nineteen (19) patients have recovered and were discharged from isolation facilities One (1) death was recorded amongst confirmed cases in week 06, 2021. 6 | P a g e Infection Prevention and Control (IPC): Conducted decontamination and disinfection of SSH molecular diagnostic laboratory, SSH Damaturu, Nayinawa PHCC, and FMC Nguru Isolation centers Conducted decontamination and disinfection of house-holds of confirmed cases. Laboratory and Diagnostic Support: Ten (10) samples tested positive, one hundred and sixty (160) are negative, and the results of the remaining thirteen (13) samples are pending Following-up with the laboratory team to retrieve pending sample results The total number of samples collected is five thousand, six hundred and nine (5,609). Two hundred and sixty (260) results are positive, five thousand, two hundred and ninety-four (5,294) are negative, forty- two (42) for a repeat test, and thirteen (13) remaining sample results are pending. Risk Communication and Social Mobilization: Conducted mass community sensitization through radio jingles and phone-in program at Yobe State Broadcasting Cooperation (YBC) The SPHCMB team, in collaboration with partners, conducted the motorized campaign in high-burden LGAs (Damaturu, Bade, Potiskum, and Nguru) Yobe SMOH team, in collaboration with WHO HTR teams and AVADAR informants, UNICEF VCMs, and CGPP volunteers, conducted mass community sensitization, reaching 7,268 people with COVID-19 prevention messages. Logistics and Operational Support: Distributed COVID-19 IPC commodities to SSH molecular diagnostic laboratory, GH Potiskum, and GH Gashua Distributed PPEs and IEC materials to the IPC, Surveillance, POE, and Risk Communication teams. CHALLENGES: Non-state Armed Groups (NSAGs) attacks on hospitals and PHC centers across the state are disrupting COVID-19 response and health services in the affected LGAs (Geidam and Gujba LGAs) Insecurity and military operations are limiting contact tracing, active case search, and community sensitization in security-compromised LGAs Bad geographical is limiting access to remote communities to sustain COVID-19 prevention activities Fear of stigmatization leading to non-disclosure and refusal of sample collection.
