    MARK CARWARDINE WILD THOUGHTS I was saddened recently to hear of the death of an old friend of mine. Richard Henry, who was believed to be more than 80 years old, died of natural causes. A legendary kakapo from New Zealand, he was named after a Victorian conservationist who pioneered efforts to save this Critically Endangered night parrot from extinction. Then I started to think about how many of the last survivors of a range of endangered species I happen to have met over the years. There are loads: from Lonesome George, the last known individual of the Pinta Island giant tortoise in the Galápagos Islands, to Najin, Fatu, Sudan and Suni, four of the world’s last remaining eight northern white rhinoceroses, who I accompanied on their long journey from the Czech Republic to Kenya last year. Of course, scientists working full-time in the field know a great many more individuals by name.     MARK CARWARDINE WILD THOUGHTS The reason I haven’t written this column for the past six months or so is that I’ve been criss-crossing the globe with Stephen Fry. Our plan was to retrace the steps I had taken on a similar journey 20 years earlier with Douglas Adams, for a book entitled Last Chance to See, to learn how a motley collection of endangered animals have been coping and to make a BBC series about our findings. Our journey has left me with a mind-boggling mishmash of memories and impressions: exactly how much Stephen hates camping, for example, and the astonishing fact that he can learn a new language in just three weeks. But my overriding impression is to do with conservation. And I’m afraid it’s not good. I remember flying down the east coast of Madagascar in 1989, over an almost continuous swathe of rainforest that stretched as far as the eye could see. Sitting next to Stephen, exactly two decades de Roy/Minden/FLPA Tui later, we stared out of the window at the same stretch of coast – and there was virtually no forest left. On the other side of the world, in New Zealand, we went in search of the world’s largest, fattest and least-able-to-fly parrot – the kakapo. Heise Stanford University Abstract Humankind is currently confronted with what some biologists call the sixth mass extinction of species in the history of life on Earth, and the first one triggered by humans. This essay places the narrative that usually accompanies scientific accounts of biodiversity loss in relation to the long tradition of environmentalist stories about the decline of nature. It demonstrates how elegiac and tragic story templates turn accounts of the decline of a particular species into tools for a broader critique of modernization processes, and explores an alternative, come- dic narrative template that approaches extinction in the context of evo- lution, contingency, and experiment. Species Extinction and the End of Nature Environmentalism, broadly understood as a mode of thinking that emerged at the turn of the nineteenth century out of the re- sistance to industrialization and modernization, rests on a percep- tion of nature as threatened by human intervention.     Honors English II Summer Reading 2020-2021 To be successful in Honors English II you must grasp not only how literature has changed throughout time, but also understand the choices writers make in this context. This will be your first opportunity to explore how writers have chosen diverse methods to communicate their messages. Here’s the assignment(s): read the books. Then, A. Be prepared to write a paper (during class in September) analyzing HOW the narrative can be constructed to not only entertain, but to argue, and/or inform. Discuss how each of the authors whose books you read use narrative as a tool to inform and/or persuade the reader. B. Be prepared to incorporate ideas and concepts, as well as personal responses, into syntheses throughout the school year. Therefore keep track of your thoughts and reactions to what you read. How can you “prepare” to write? Here are some possibilities that will help you capture an issue in each book: ● Annotate your book (post-its?) with reactions, connections, and interpretations to issues that the book raises (as opposed to randomly underlining or highlighting passages--if you don’t note in the margin why you’ve underlined or highlighted that passage, there’s no point in highlighting it!). ​ ● Create end-of-chapter summaries or reactions, perhaps with a key line, correctly cited. ● Write a reflection of the book that identifies an issue being explored and the author’s take on it (do this right after you read while it’s fresh in your mind). ● Devise your own method or use a method that already works for you.
