Climate Fiction
CLIMATE FICTION Instructor: Christopher A. Walker Course Number: EN/ES 337 Lecture: MW 2:30-3:45 in Miller 319 Office Hours: Mondays 4:00-6:00 (and by appointment) in Miller 216 Mailbox: Miller 216 Email: [email protected] Course Description Contemporary fiction is now investigating the possibilities and limits of story-telling in the era of global climate change. These works, referred to as “climate fiction” or “cli-fi,” explore humanity’s connection to- and impact upon Earth by asking questions such as: what will human and nonhuman communities look like after sea-level rise, desertification, and biodiversity loss remap our planet?; how might species evolve in response to ecological collapse?; what affects— melancholy, despair, hope—will eulogize a lost home-world? Reading cli-fi novels, short stories, poetry, and film, this course will situate our texts within the Environmental Humanities, an interdisciplinary field that combines scientific and cultural discourses about the environment with humanistic concerns for social justice. Working through the narrative conventions of the utopian, dystopian, and apocalyptic genres, we will ask how cli- fi not only narrates impending disaster on a global scale but also strives to imagine a more just future, one that combines environmentalism and social equality. These texts will be paired with excerpts from philosophical and ecocritical writings which will aid our development of the humanistic methodologies needed to analyze and appreciate this new genre. Chapter I: Realism and the Novel Form THERE are still no wholly satisfactory answers to many of the general questions which anyone interested in the early eighteenth-century novelists and their works is likely to ask: Is the novel a new literary form? And if we assume, as is commonly done, that it is, and that it was begun by Defoe, Richardson and Fielding, how does it differ from the prose fiction of the past, from that of Greece, for example, or that of the Middle Ages, or of seventeenth-century France? And is there any reason why these differences appeared when and where they did? Such large questions are never easy to approach, much less to answer, and they are particularly difficult in this case because Defoe, Richardson and Fielding do not in the usual sense constitute a literary school. Indeed their works show so little sign of mutual influence and are so different in nature that at first sight it appears that our curiosity about the rise of the novel is unlikely to find any satisfaction other than the meagre one afforded by the terms ‘genius’ and ‘accident’, the twin faces on the Janus of the dead ends of literary history. We cannot, of course, do without them: on the other hand there is not much we can do with them. -

These applications overlap but are far from coextensive. “The Rhetoric of Probability from the New Science to Common Sense” traces the role of probability, as a fluid concept, in the binding and eventual disassociation of science and fiction during this time. The species of probability generated by fictional narrative is utilized to support empirically indemonstrable hypotheses before and after the rise of experimental culture in the seventeenth century. While the early novel, especially the corpus of Daniel Defoe, has long been spoken of as a fictional imitation of experimental practice, there are significant cases in which fiction is part of the process of experimental demonstration. The exclusively fictional character of the novel later solidifies in the works of Richardson and Fielding as the forms of mathematical and experimental probability developed over the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries are internalized for aesthetic effect. -

Abstract Barbara Kingsolver’s Flight Behaviour is a clarion call for the forestalled eco-apocalypse, climate change or global warming .Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, Maggie Gees The Ice People, Jeanette Winterson’s The Stone Gods and many other novels in the same vein are futuristic. Even though there is always imagination in fiction, Flight Behaviour does not focus on the aftermath of any global disaster. Rather it reflects the actuality of climate change and Monarch butterfly migration. It also focuses on the story of a young woman trying to change her life, and a deeply humane account of working people responding to the local effects of the global climate crisis. Kingsolver has carved a career from examining social issues in her novels, from economic inequality to environmentalism. Flight Behaviour portrays the inducement and consequences of climate change that forms the butterfly effect. Form As Theme in Richard Powers' the Overstory
“The tree is saying things in words be- fore words”: form as theme in Richard Powers’ The Overstory di Pia Masiero* Abstract: Richard Powers’ 2019 Pulitzer Prize-winning book, The Overstory, is a very ambi- tious work which purports to raise the awareness on the life of trees proposing an eco- centered way of being revolving around the enlargement of the concepts of agency and crea- tivity. This article focuses on the formal ways in which Powers has strived to give voice to the-other-than human. Specifically, it presents the structuring of the plot according to the ex- tended metaphor of the tree and its rhetorical functioning according to the parabolic form. These macro principles are translated into two micro choices – the positing of a nonhuman narrator and the present as the dominant tense – that sustain and mirror the novel’s thematic concerns. The close readings of the existential trajectories of two female characters open up to a reflection on Powers’ gender politics. Richard Powers’ 2019 Pulitzer Prize-winning book, The Overstory, contains the ingredients that according to the foundational book by Lawrence Buell, The Envi- ronmental Imagination, “comprise an environmentally oriented work” (7), namely, 1. The nonhuman environment is present not merely as a framing device but as a presence that begins to suggest that human history is implicated in natural history. 2. The human inter- est is not understood to be the only legitimate interest. 3. Human accountability to the envi- ronment is part of the texts’ ethical orientation.. 4. Some sense of the environment as a pro- cess rather than a constant or a given is at least implicit in the text. -
