1990-91 Hornet Highlights

Six Hornet teams were crowned MIAA champions during the 1990-91 school year, with five "K" squads taking undisputed league titles (more than any other MIAA school). Kalamazoo's men's tennis team won its 53rd consecutive crown, while the volleyball team won its first-ever MIAA title. Hornet teams also captured firsts in women's swimming & diving, women's tennis, and men's and women's soccer.

Kalamazoo continued to lead the MIAA in all-time team championships, increasing its cumulative total to 214 during the 1990-91 school year. The runner-up league institution has won 152 team titles.

The men's tennis team won an unprecedented fifth NCAA Division m championship in May, defeating the University of California-Santa Cruz in the finals. Lewis Miller won the Division Ill singles title, becoming the fourth Hornet to do so. Other teams qualifying for post-season competition were volleyball and men's and women's soccer. Teams qualifying individuals for post-season action were women's tennis and men's and women's swimming and diving.

Fifteen Hornet student-athletes achieved all-American honors during the 199Q-91 year, with half of the Hornets' 16 teams producing at least one all-American. Two of those student-athletes (David Doyle and Nathan Eddy) were Academic All-Ameri cans. Since the 1985-86 school year, Kalamazoo College student-athletes have achieved all-American status 74 times.

Five Hornets were named the MIAA most valuable player in their sport: Karen Carney (women's soccer), Derek Bylsma (men's soccer), Mei Zhang (volleyball), Lewis Miller (men's tennis) and Jackie Aurelia (women's tennis).

Kalamazoo took third place in the MIAA All-Sports Standings for the third straight year with 112 points. Of the total, 51 points were accounted for by men's sports and the other 61 points were accounted for by women's sports.

Three Hornet coaches received "Coach of the Year" honors from their peers. George Acker (men's tennis) and Pete Kowall (women's soccer) were both voted NCAA Division Ill Coach of the Year, while Jeanne Hess (volleyball) was voted Division ill Midwest Region Coach of the Year. 4

About Kalamazoo College

Kalamazoo is a private, coeducational, four-year liberal arts college. Founded in 1833, it is among the 100 oldest colleges and universities in the nation. The excellence of its academic programs has earned the College a ''highly competitive" rating by Barron's Profiles of American Colleges. Nearly all of the 1,260 students are enrolled full time and live on campus, creating a greater sense of community. The College has an excellent teaching faculty, most with doctorates in their fields. The student-faculty ratio of 12:1 affords small classes and personal attention to indi- vidual student needs. · Kalamazoo offers 23 majors and five other areas of concentrated study. It is noted for strength in the sciences, pre-professional programs, economics and business admin istration, and foreign languages. The career development internship and foreign study programs are exceptional among all American colleges and universities. Over 80 per cent of all Kalamazoo students participate in these off-campus experiences. The campus is located in an attractive residential area, minutes from the downtown business district. The city of Kalamazoo, the fifth-largest metropolitan center in Michi gan, provides a wide variety of cultural, social and recreational opportunities. Midway between Chicago and Detroit on 1-94, Kalamazoo is served by major bus lines, AMTRAK rail service and several airlines. 5 Football

The 19- year coaching veteran- who recorded a career high school record of 129-35- coached at Grand Junction (CO) High School from 1984-89, leading teams to an overall record of 59-12. His 1988 Colorado state championship team was ranked lOth nationally by USA Today, and his 1989 squad defeated both the No. 1 and No.2 ranked teams in Colorado. Wannack's 1985 team was also a state finalist, while his 1984 and 1987 squads made it to the state semifinals. Previously, Warmack held assistant football coaching positions at Wabash College (Crawfordsville, IN) in 1983 and Central Connecticut State from 1982-83. Warmack's longest football coaching stint was at North Muskegon High School (North Muskegon, MI), where he led the Norsemen from 1972-79. Under Warmack, North Muskegon achieved a No.2 (Class C) state ranking in both 1978 and 1979, with the team advancing all the way to the state semifinals in the latter year. His other credits include head coaching jobs at Grant High School (Fox Lake, IL) in 1981 and at Ignacio (CO) High School in 1980. Warmack has recieved a number of coaching honors, including Area and Regional Coach of the Year in Michigan (1978, 1979), Conference Coach of the Year in Colorado (1980, 1984,1985, 1988), and 3-A Coach of the Year in Colorado (1988). 1990 Season in Review

Kalamazoo College's football team is no longer the Rodney Dangerfield of the Michigan Inter collegiate Athletic Association. The Hornets, who dosed out their 1990 season with a disappointing but nonetheless hard-fought 21-15loss at Hope College (Nov. 3), made plenty of progress under first-year coach Dave Warmack. Kalamazoo won two of its first three contests this fall, and although the Hornets were unable to stay on that winning pace through a rough MIAA schedule, their final mark of 3-5-1 (1-3-1 in MIAA competition) was still the best record for a "K" gridiron squad since 1983. The Hornets' 1990 record did not indicate the kind of success that Warmack has been used to (he posted a 129-35 record as a high school coach), but there was still plenty of proof that Kalamazoo is headed in the right direction. "lhe team improved all season. Our execution got better as the season went along," Warmack said. "One thing we did achieve was to earn a little respect in the MIAA. With that accomplished, our next goal is to challenge for a league championship." Kalamazoo's improvement was evident in the last third of the season. The Hornets came from behind to defeat Alma, 28-24, on Oct. 13 in the Hornets' first road win over an MIAA opponent in nearly five years, then battled Adrian College to a 14-14 tie the following Saturday. And in the finale against Hope, Kalamazoo came within one yard of a possible upset of the Flying Dutchmen. ''K" had an opportunity to tie Hope at halftime, but instead trailed 14-7 at the break when the Hornets fumbled the ball on the Hope 1-yard line with less than a minute remaining. Post-season awards went to senior offensive lineman Tom Anderson, who was named team MVP and was also selected to the All-MIAA first team. Juniors Gary Wilson, a defensive end, Eddie Walsh, a linebacker, and Tarek Buckmaster, an offensive lineman, were named to the all-league second team. Wilson was second on the team in tackles for loss of yardage this season, while Walsh led the team in fumble recoveries with three, returning one of the loose balls for a touchdown against Alma. Senior wide receiver David Doyle, Kalamazoo's leading receiver during the past two seasons, also got his due as he was named to the prestigious GTE Academic All-American team. Doyle, an English major from East Lansing, has maintained an overall GPA of 3.92. Although Kalamazoo suffered heavy graduation losses- 11 of the ''K" starters last season were seniors- performances like those of junior running back Walter Miller (17 rushes, 96 yards) and freshman quarterback Chris Berkimer (7 of 11 passing, 76 yards) against Hope leave room for optimism in coming seasons. Warmack, who had limited time to prepare his players for the 1990 season, will also have a full year to get ready for the 1991 campaign. "Next year, our players will have a better idea of what we're trying to accomplish in our system," Warmack said. "We will have a base to draw on instead of working from ground zero." - Kalamazoo's 1-3-11eague record was good for a fifth-place finish in the MIAA.

Head Coach Jeanne Hess

Entering her eighth year as head coach, Jeanne Hess has guided the Kalamazoo College volley ball team to national prominence. In 1990, Hess coached the Hornets to their first MIAA championship and first NCAA Division III playoff berth. Kalamazoo's improvement did not go unnoticed as Hess was named the Division III Midwest Region Coach of the Year. Hess received her bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan, where she played varsity volleyball for four seasons. She has a master's degree in exercise science from Western Michigan Univer sity, and teaches in the physical education department at Kalamazoo College. Jeanne has played a vital role in bringing several prestigious tournaments to ''K," including the Mikasa Cup, the Great Lakes Junior National Volleyfest, and the Michigan High School Athletic Associa tion Volleyball Tournament. Recently, Jeanne was promoted to full-time faculty status after accepting the additional position of assistant women's basketball coach. Her husband, Jim, was named head coach of the Hornet women's basketball team. Jeanne and Jim have two children, Andrew, 6, and Kevan, 3.

Assistant Coaches

Anne Harrison begins her third year as assistant coach with the Hornets. Besides helping Hess with the varsity squad, Harrison also coaches Kalamazoo's junior varsity team. The Hornet JV will play at MIAA matches following the varsity contest. Harrison brings the Hornets experience and discipline after playing volleyball for four years at Oakland University. Also volunteering as an assistant coach this season will be Theresa Jackson Knoechel, a former outstanding player at Western Michigan University.

1990 Season in Review

Kalamazoo College's volleyball team enjoyed its best season in school history this fall, as the Hornet spikers advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III tournament before bowing to the defend ing national champion. Kalamazoo, which concluded the campaign with an outstanding record of 30-7, made an impres sive debut in its first NCAA postseason appearance. The Hornets won their first contest at the six-team NCAA Division III Midwest Regional- held at Kalamazoo College's Anderson Athletic Center-defeat ing seventh-ranked Ohio Northern University for the second time this fall, 16-14, 15-8, 15-12. ONU was the 1989 Division III national runner-up. Kalamazoo junior hitter Mei Zhang set an NCAA Division III tournament record for kills in the match, racking up 34. Nearly as astounding was the performance of juniot setter Rocky Cibor, who effectively moved Zhang around the front row with 48 assists. Kalamazoo - ranked fourth in the final NCAA Division III poll-could not extend its stay in the tournament, however, exiting against No. 1 ranked Washington (MO) University, 15-1, 15-8, 15-5. Kalamazoo coach Jeanne Hess, who directed Kalamazoo to its first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship this season, said there were lessons to be learned from the loss to Washington. "Washington was expected to win, and they played like it," Hess said. ''We were not expected to win when the season began, but as the season progressed the expectations increased. ''Next season will depend on our expectations. We have to make the commitment to winning. We will have four seniors (Zhang, Cibor, Barbie Oelslager and Karen Willms) returning, and they will determine our destiny." Zhang and Cibor in particular will set the tone for Kalamazoo in 1991. The 6-1 Zhang made 535 kills in 107 games for an incredible average of five kills per game, and finished the campaign with an attack percentage of .433. Cibor averaged 9.33 assists per game and led the team in service aces with 63. Zhang, from Beijing, China, became Kalamazoo's first All-American in volleyball, being named to the American Volleyball Coaches' Association first team for NCAA Division III. She was also voted the MIAA MVP and was joined on the all-league first team by Cibor, a Division III Midwest Region selec tion, and Willms. Oelslager was selected to the all-conference second team. Hess, voted Midwest Region Coach of the Year (Division III) this fall, will have to overcome with the graduation of seniors Jennifer Duff and Kelly O'Reilly, an Ali-MIAA honorable mention this season. "Their leadership will be sorely missed," Hess said. . In addition to the national tournament, there were other Hornet highlights this fall. The team was ranked among the top NCAA Division III teams throughout much of the season and enjoyed a 17-match win streak which included a first-place finish at the Ohio Northern Tournament and a victory over defending MIAA champion Calvin College.

1990 Season in Review

The 1990 men's soccer team won its fifth Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association champion ship in six years last season and made its fourth appearance in the NCAA Division III postseason tourna ment in six years. Kalamazoo had an 11-1 record in the MIAA - losing only to Calvin College, which shared the league championship -and finished the season with an overall record of 15-3. Kalamazoo's regular season losses were to Wooster College (Sept. 2) by a score of 2-1 and Calvin (Nov. 27) by score of 3-2. Kalamazoo was defeated by Ohio Wesleyan in the NCAA Division III Regionals by a score of 1-0 (Nov. 2) for the team's third loss of the season. "The team had expectations of going to nationals and even though we lost, it was a great experience for us," said senior co-captain Paul Ander son. The Hornets proved to be tough competitors, as evidenced by wins over Western Michigan University, Calvin, Depauw, and Spring Arbor. The campaign was highlighted by a 14-contest winning streak. ''Team chemistry was very effective and there was a tremendous fellowship among our players throughout the season," Hornet coach Hardy Fuchs said. Senior co-captain Derek Bylsma became the MIAA's all-time leading scorer this season with 56 goals over his three-year soccer career as a Hornet. Bylsma scored 28 goals and made seven assists during the 1990 season to give him a total of 63 points. As expected, Bylsma was voted the league MVP, with senior teammates Fred Mayer and Jeff Wilson joining him on the All-MIAA first team. Senior Paul Anderson, junior Rob Orsucci and sophomore Max Westland were named to the all-league second team. Bylsma was also named to the NCAA Division III all-American First Team. He was also an all American pick in '88. -Men's Soccer- 40

Coach Scott Forrester

Scott Forrester, an accomplished soccer coach and player, enters his first season as head coach of the Kalamazoo College women's soccer team. He takes over for 1990 Division III Coach of the Year Pete Kowall, who has accepted a position as assistant coach for the University of Maryland women's soccer squad. Forrester, 30, comes to Kalamazoo with some excellent credentials. He has coached both the men's and women's varsity soccer teams at Kalamazoo Loy Norrix High School since 1989. Forrester was also men's varsity soccer coach at Galesburg-Augusta High School from 1984-1986 and presently coaches the girls' under-14 Olympic development team for Michigan. In addition, Forrester coached Team USA during its 1987 European Tour to Holland, Denmark, Germany and Russia, and Laser's Eur<'pean Soccer Tour in 1985. Forrester's playing experience is also extensive. He was a goalkeeper for the Western Michigan University varsity soccer team from 1981-1983 and played for Team MOST of the Western Michigan League from 1984-1990. Forrester holds a bachelor of science degree from WMU in physical education and political science and presently holds a "B" license from the United States Soccer Federation. Forrester is not new to the Hornet program, having coached junior goalkeeper Shelly Krisfalusi last season. He can only hope to have the kind of success with the Kalamazoo team that he had with Krisfalusi, a first-team All-American who did not allow a goal until the 13th game of the season. "I am delighted that we will be able to maintain the quality of coaching that has been established in our women's soccer program," Kalamazoo Director of Women's Athletics Lyn Maurer said when Forrester's hiring was announced in June. "Scott is not only a very knowledgeable coach but also pro vides continuity to our program because he has worked with the team in the past and has been an integral part of our recruiting efforts."
