ANTONIO RIVERA, Universidad Complutense, Madrid IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca, 2016 III IV Aknwoledgments Writing a thesis is not an individual, solitary job. During the last four years in which I have delved into the study of Ortega’s philosophy, spending most of my time in Spanish archives and libraries, I also had the opportunity of benefitting from the help of many people who have helped me to ameliorate my work, and who have supported me during my research. In this occasion I am happy to thank these people, starting from the one who firstly accompanied me through the texts of Ortega since I was a master student at the University of Padua, Prof. Adone Brandalise. From then on I had the great fortune of benefitting from the help of many other professors and Orteguian scholars, both in Italy and Spain, thanks to the financial support of IMT School, and the academic guide of its staff, and in particular of proff. Giovanni Orsina and Antonio Masala. I would like to thank, in alphabetic order, proff. Alejandro de Haro Honrubia, Jaime de Salas Ortueta, Jean -Claude Lêvéque, José Luis Moreno Pestaña, Donatella Pini, Antonio Piñas Mesa, Armando Savignano and José Luis Villacañas. I would also like to thank the director of the Ortega y Gasset Foundation in Madrid, prof. Javier Zamora Bonilla, for giving me the opportunity to spend long periods of study in that incredible research center, and to all its staff for their enormous help. I express my gratitude also to prof. Margarida Almeida Amoedo for reading a first draft of this thesis. I would also like to thanks some very helpful PhD students who I met during my numerous stays in Madrid and that, in differen t periods, since 2014, helped me in my research at the Foundation, the Complutense and around the whole Spanish peninsula. In particular, I would like to thank Marcos Alonso Fernández, Jorge Costa Delgado, Noé Exposito Rotero, Manuel Artime Omil and Edgar Straehle. A special thanks to another recent PhD Candidate and great friend, Enrico Zucchi. My most profound gratitude goes to Duverli Coronado Sandoval, who has always sustained me during the last years with enormous patience. And to my family that supported me.

A writing master, businessman, printer and type designer, he conducted experiments to improve legibility which also included paper making and ink manufacturing. In 1758, he was appointed printer to Cambridge University Press, and despite his personal Atheism, printed a folio Bible in 1763. His typefaces were greatly admired for their simplicity and refinement by Pierre Simon Fournier, and Giambattista Bodoni. STUDYING POLITICAL SCIENCE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MURCIA A PRESENTATION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE AND OF THE DEGREE IN POLITICAL SCIENCE October 2005 ¾ WHY SPEND A YEAR OR A SEMESTRE STUDYING POLITICAL SCIENCE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MURCIA? The degree in Political Science at the University of Murcia is a 4-years degree that provides a broad and comprehensive set of choices to incoming Erasmus students that may come from various backgrounds: European studies, International Relation, Politics, Public Administration studies, etc. It is characterised by its interdisciplinarity –especially during the first two years- and by its wide focus on various fields of the study of Political Science, Politics, Government, and Administration. The courses offered include topics on European politics, comparative politics, public policy, political behaviour, research methodology, public opinion, Spanish politics, etc. Most courses offer a balanced mixed between traditional lectures and lab and/or reading- discussion sessions. Students can also obtain further skills by enrolling into the practicum scheme the Department of Political Science monitors, which allows them to spend some hours a week working for an NGO, a trade union, or a private firm to get further professional skills, in exchange of some ECTS credits. Specially popular with incoming Erasmus students are the positions offered at the local branch of UNICEF, and at a local NGO dedicated to promote immigrants’ social integration and rights. Additionally, the International Office at the University of Murcia provides great support to students before their arrival with practical issues: accommodation, language courses, course registration, etc. A further advantage of the University of Murcia is its flexibility in terms of the courses students can enroll once they are accepted as an Erasmus exchange student.

• Casanova, Julían, the Spanish Republic and Civil
This page intentionally left blank The Spanish Republic and Civil War The Spanish Civil War has gone down in history for the horrific violence that it generated. The climate of euphoria and hope that greeted the over- throw of the Spanish monarchy was utterly transformed just five years later by a cruel and destructive civil war. Here, Julián Casanova, one of Spain’s leading historians, offers a magisterial new account of this crit- ical period in Spanish history. He exposes the ways in which the Republic brought into the open simmering tensions between Catholics and hard- line anticlericalists, bosses and workers, Church and State, order and revolution. In 1936, these conflicts tipped over into the sacas, paseos and mass killings that are still passionately debated today. The book also explores the decisive role of the international instability of the 1930s in the duration and outcome of the conflict. Franco’s victory was in the end a victory for Hitler and Mussolini, and for dictatorship over democracy. julián casanova is Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Zaragoza, Spain. He is one of the leading experts on the Second Republic and the Spanish Civil War and has published widely in Spanish and in English. • Centrist Politics in the Spanish Province of Valencia January 1930 to August 1936
THE RISE AND FALL OF THE PARTIDO DE UNIÓN REPUBLICANA AUTONOMISTA: CENTRIST POLITICS IN THE SPANISH PROVINCE OF VALENCIA JANUARY 1930 TO AUGUST 1936 Submitted by Stephen Rodger Lynam to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History, July 2018. This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. Signature……………………………………………………………………. 1 2 ABSTRACT This thesis is an interrogation of the impact of the Partido de Unión Republicana Autonomista (The Autonomist Republican Union Party or PURA) on the politics of the Spanish province of Valencia, and in turn on national politics, during the politically turbulent years of 1930-1936, the period which immediately preceded the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. It was the most important Valencian political force and acted as de facto provincial affiliate of the Radical Party, a conservative republican party which was to play a crucial role in national politics. This study uses a wide range of documentary sources, including contemporary newspapers, official papers, and parliamentary records, supplemented by a number of interviews with participants in the events and in-depth case study reviews of two important settlements in the province together with detailed studies of electoral and land ownership data in a further three settlements.

  • The Rhetoric of Miguel De Unamuno's Newspaper
“WITH WEAPONS OF BURNING WORDS”: THE RHETORIC OF MIGUEL DE UNAMUNO’S NEWSPAPER WRITINGS A Dissertation by ELIZABETH RAY EARLE Submitted to the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies of Texas A&M University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Chair of Committee, Nathan Crick Committee Members, Leroy Dorsey Alberto Moreiras Randall Sumpter Head of Department, Kevin Barge August 2019 Major Subject: Communication Copyright 2019 Elizabeth Ray Earle ABSTRACT Although he was most famous for his books of fiction and philosophy, 20th century Spanish public intellectual Miguel de Unamuno also wrote a large body of newspaper articles in which he critiqued politics and society during his lifetime. Unamuno lived during a polarized time in Spanish history, and he witnessed many political and social conflicts, including the Third Carlist War, the Spanish-American War, World War I, a military dictatorship, the Second Spanish Republic, Franco’s military coup, and the Spanish Civil War. In the midst of this atmosphere of conflict and polarization, Unamuno used the medium of the newspaper to diagnose Spain’s problem and to present possible solutions. This project examines the rhetorical style that Unamuno developed in response to his political context, as he examined Spanish society and the various political regimes in Spain. As he defined the problem, Unamuno characterized it as one of ideology, excess rationalism, and inauthenticity. To solve this problem, Unamuno approached it in two ways. First, he acted as what he called an “idea-breaker,” or as one who assumes an attitude of skepticism and uses individual thought to break down ideas and dogma.
