Lluís de Zulueta LLUÍS DE ZULUETA, UN DELS PRIMERS IL·LUSTRES ESTIUEJANTS DE VILASSAR DE MAR Jordi Pomés1 (Dr. En història) Lluís de Zulueta i Escolano (1878-1964), polític republicà, pedagog i escriptor, és una figura força desconeguda en l’àmbit de la historiografia contemporània, tot i que va arribar a ser ministre durant la Segona República, concretament ministre d’Estat entre 1931 i 1933, ambaixador espanyol a Alemanya i al Vaticà el 1933 i 1936 respectivament, a més de ser un dels pedagogs més importants del segle XX espanyol; va ser professor catedràtic de l’Escola Superior de Magisteri de Madrid des de 1910 i va escriure moltes i brillants pàgines dedicades a la pedagogia2. Precisament la seva figura històrica ha merescut més atenció en aquesta disciplina que en el de la història3. Lluís de Zulueta va estiuejar a Vilassar de Mar entre 1880, l’any en què el seu pare va comprar l’anomenada finca de Can Cuyàs, i principis dels anys vint, en què, per motius fonamentalment econòmics, s’hagué de vendre aquesta finca. Aquests més de quaranta anys de visites més o menys llargues en aquesta població costanera van suposar per a Zulueta no pocs aprenentatges per a la seva formació com a home il·lustrat del país. Es pot dir que Vilassar de Mar va ser un dels referents geogràfics més importants en la vida de Lluís Zulueta i la seva família. Malgrat que a partir de 1909 s’establí definitivament a Madrid, fonamentalment per haver trobat en aquesta ciutat la seva principal ocupació professional i font d’ingressos, una plaça de professor a l’esmentada Escola Superior de Magisteri, continuà visitant i estiuejant a Vilassar cada estiu. -

i Published 2014 by ISCHE. ISSN 2313-1837 These abstracts are set in Baskerville Old Face, designed in 1757 by John Baskerville in Birmingham, UK. A writing master, businessman, printer and type designer, he conducted experiments to improve legibility which also included paper making and ink manufacturing. In 1758, he was appointed printer to Cambridge University Press, and despite his personal Atheism, printed a folio Bible in 1763. His typefaces were greatly admired for their simplicity and refinement by Pierre Simon Fournier, and Giambattista Bodoni. Benjamin Franklin, printer and fellow member of the Royal Society of Arts, took the designs to the US, where they were adopted for most federal Government publishing. Studying Political Science at the University of Murcia
STUDYING POLITICAL SCIENCE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MURCIA A PRESENTATION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE AND OF THE DEGREE IN POLITICAL SCIENCE October 2005 ¾ WHY SPEND A YEAR OR A SEMESTRE STUDYING POLITICAL SCIENCE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MURCIA? The degree in Political Science at the University of Murcia is a 4-years degree that provides a broad and comprehensive set of choices to incoming Erasmus students that may come from various backgrounds: European studies, International Relation, Politics, Public Administration studies, etc. It is characterised by its interdisciplinarity –especially during the first two years- and by its wide focus on various fields of the study of Political Science, Politics, Government, and Administration. The courses offered include topics on European politics, comparative politics, public policy, political behaviour, research methodology, public opinion, Spanish politics, etc. Most courses offer a balanced mixed between traditional lectures and lab and/or reading- discussion sessions. Students can also obtain further skills by enrolling into the practicum scheme the Department of Political Science monitors, which allows them to spend some hours a week working for an NGO, a trade union, or a private firm to get further professional skills, in exchange of some ECTS credits. Specially popular with incoming Erasmus students are the positions offered at the local branch of UNICEF, and at a local NGO dedicated to promote immigrants’ social integration and rights. Additionally, the International Office at the University of Murcia provides great support to students before their arrival with practical issues: accommodation, language courses, course registration, etc. A further advantage of the University of Murcia is its flexibility in terms of the courses students can enroll once they are accepted as an Erasmus exchange student. -

EL NUNCIO APOSTÓLICO Y LA REPÚBLICA LAICA: LA OFENSIVA ANTICLERICAL DE 1931 EN LOS INFORMES DE MONSEÑOR TEDESCHINI JUAN AVILÉS FARRÉ UNED [email protected] RESUMEN: El objetivo de este artículo es examinar desde la perspectiva de la Santa Sede la po- lítica anticlerical del Gobierno español, desde la proclamación de la República en abril de 1931 hasta la disolución de la Compañía de Jesús en enero de 1932. Sus fuentes son la correspondencia entre el nuncio, monseñor Tedeschini, y el secretario de Estado, cardenal Pacelli, y las actas de la Congregación para los Asuntos Eclesiás- ticos Extraordinarios. El método ha sido analizar los contactos que el nuncio man- tuvo con el presidente de Gobierno y varios ministros, su valoración de la política española y la línea de actuación que se le indicó desde el Vaticano. Las conclusiones son que el nuncio trató de moderar el anticlericalismo del proyecto constitucional mediante la negociación con el Gobierno. The climate of euphoria and hope that greeted the over- throw of the Spanish monarchy was utterly transformed just five years later by a cruel and destructive civil war. Signature……………………………………………………………………. 1 2 ABSTRACT This thesis is an interrogation of the impact of the Partido de Unión Republicana Autonomista (The Autonomist Republican Union Party or PURA) on the politics of the Spanish province of Valencia, and in turn on national politics, during the politically turbulent years of 1930-1936, the period which immediately preceded the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. It was the most important Valencian political force and acted as de facto provincial affiliate of the Radical Party, a conservative republican party which was to play a crucial role in national politics. This study uses a wide range of documentary sources, including contemporary newspapers, official papers, and parliamentary records, supplemented by a number of interviews with participants in the events and in-depth case study reviews of two important settlements in the province together with detailed studies of electoral and land ownership data in a further three settlements. -

Unamuno lived during a polarized time in Spanish history, and he witnessed many political and social conflicts, including the Third Carlist War, the Spanish-American War, World War I, a military dictatorship, the Second Spanish Republic, Franco’s military coup, and the Spanish Civil War. In the midst of this atmosphere of conflict and polarization, Unamuno used the medium of the newspaper to diagnose Spain’s problem and to present possible solutions. This project examines the rhetorical style that Unamuno developed in response to his political context, as he examined Spanish society and the various political regimes in Spain. As he defined the problem, Unamuno characterized it as one of ideology, excess rationalism, and inauthenticity. To solve this problem, Unamuno approached it in two ways. First, he acted as what he called an “idea-breaker,” or as one who assumes an attitude of skepticism and uses individual thought to break down ideas and dogma. -
