August Brings Jeff Jones and Al Clark! We hope you enjoy the August edition of the Sportsline, the newsletter of The Norfolk Sports Club! Volume 31 #8 August, 2016 August brings Jeff Jones and Al Clark! Join us Monday, August 8th, as we welcome Jeff Jones! Jones was named the 13th head men’s basketball coach at Old Dominion University on April 4, 2013. During the 2014-15 regular sea- son, Jones’ Monarchs notched several big victories, as ODU took down nationally-ranked VCU and eventual NCAA Tournament team, Georgia State. His squad churned out 10 straight wins from Nov. 24 to Jan. 17, which included wins against C-USA foes Marshall and Charlotte as well as in-state rivals VCU, George Mason and William & Mary. Off the bas- ketball court, Jones was honored nationally as the 2015 Barefoot Coach of the Year for his work, contributions and creation of awareness for Sa- maritan’s Feet, which provides shoes to impoverished children (both do- mestically and internationally). His teams advanced to 11 post season appearances (two at ODU, six at UVA and three at AU), including a 1995 NCAA Elite 8, a 1993 NCAA Sweet 16 appearance and an NIT championship in 1992 while at UVA. Jones has a 211-183 record at American for 13 years and 146-104 as head coach at the University of Virginia. Join us on Monday, August 22nd as we welcome Al Clark! Al Clark enjoyed 30 years employed by organized base- ball. Twenty-six years were in the Major Leagues, starting in 1976 as an American League Umpire and converting to a Major League Umpire in 2000, before retiring in 2001. Mr. Clark worked 3,392 regular season games (9th most by an umpire in MLB history) along with 56 post season games including two World Series (1983 - Philadelphia vs Baltimore and 1989 - Oakland vs San Francisco), two All Star Games (1984 in San Francisco and 1995 in Texas), three American League Division Series (1981 - 1996 - 2000) and five American League Championship Series (1979 - 1982 - 1987 - 1992 - 1999). Clark was eye witness to many iconic baseball moments during his more than a quarter century in the Big Leagues, including being behind the plate in 1995 when Cal Ripken Jr. tied Lou Gehrig's consecutive games played streak and watched with admiration from third base the next night when Ripken became the all-time leader. Mr. Clark was also a member of umpire crews that were first to umpire at “The Jake” (Jacobs Field) in Cleveland, Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Balti- more, and The Ball Park in Arlington (Texas) along with closing the cavern- ous Cleveland Stadium. Mr. Clark has recently been touring the country pro- moting his new book, Called Out But Safe, A Baseball Umpire's Journey, published May 1, 2014 by The University of Nebraska Press. It was held at Princess Anne Country Club. Thanks to NSC Past President Skip Burton, for securing our course and for getting our special guest, Frank Beamer, retired Head Football Coach of Virginia Tech. • Umpire Stories
So, You Want to Be an Umpire? David Vincent Modern umpires like to be invisible on the field and consider it a good day when no one remembers them after a game. There have been days, though, that are memorable ones. Here are some of those days. *** In 1882, National League Umpire Dick Higham, a former player, was expelled from the game for colluding with gamblers. He had been the first umpire to wear a mask on the field. Higham umpired his last game on June 22, 1882 in Buffalo. *** On June 19, 1896, the Chicago Colts (now Cubs) were in Cleveland to play the Spiders. The latter team was well known around the league for acting in a rowdy manner. In the seventh inning, Umpire Tom Lynch fined and ejected Cleveland Captain Patsy Tebeau, who refused to leave. Tebeau instead rushed at Lynch to assault the umpire but the two were separated by other players. Lynch refused to work the rest of that game and left the field. After a long delay, the game resumed with Chicago player Con Daily calling the pitches and Cleveland player Cy Young making the calls on the bases. Tebeau remained in the game and Chicago’s Cap Anson protested the game because Tebeau remained in the contest even though he had been ejected. Chicago won the game, 8-3, so the protest was not lodged. After the game, Lynch told a reporter: “I suppose I should not have permitted my indignation to get the better of me, but after all there are things that pass human endurance, and one of them surely is to be called vile names.” Lynch refused to work in Cleveland after that and did not until 1898.

Yes, you read that THE COOPERSTOWN SPECIAL 2020 ( correctly! ) Our Return to Baseball Began in Cooperstown. After a devastating spring, when we all started to miss baseball again, we finally heard the great news. On June 26 The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum was reopening its doors and slowly starting to welcome fans back to the game they love. The MLB season was start- ing back up and fans were ready. So when Sports Travel and Tours decided to test out a small weekend getaway - there was no better choice than to start in Cooperstown. Our recent Cooperstown Special took place October 22-25, with our guests staying at the legendary Otesaga Hotel. The resort that houses the returning Hall of Famers every summer was a wonderful experience. The breathtaking views overlooking Otsego Lake was even nicer with the late fall foliage of upper New York State as a backdrop. The weekend included a private artifact spotlight showcasing some of the greatest World Series’ artifacts in the museum. One of the highlights according to RJ Hoagland, was to actually hold a baseball once used by one of his heroes. “Since we were a small group, the Hall of Fame brought out artifacts that were special to each of us.... I am a Cardinals’ fan so there was this baseball sitting there.
